Review: Blood Magic

Author Ella Summers
Format e-book
Print Length 284 pages
Publisher Self
Published Feb. 19, 2016

Branded as an abomination, Dragon Born mage Alex Dering has spent her whole life hiding what she is—a secret her father died to protect. Eight years after his death, Alex finally gets the chance to track down the mage responsible.

But her vengeance is put on hold when she gets a lead in London on the Blood Orb, a magical artifact with the power to control vampires. Retrieving the orb from the hate group that holds it won’t be easy; thwarting their plan to exterminate every supernatural in the world will be even harder.

To make matters worse, a mysterious killer is stalking Alex’s every move, determined to end her life. To survive this, it will take all her magic, a lot of help from a dangerous ally, and a really big sword.

Blood Magic is the second book in the Dragon Born Alexandria urban fantasy series.

My Opinion

Blood Magic picks up right where Magic Edge ends. Alex, Logan and her bestie Marek are still hunting the orbs. Logan’s momma is still the evil leader of the Convictionites. Logan is still looking into the death of Alex’s daddy-who hired the assassin Nightshade and why. After a particularly bad battle Alex and Logan go home- well to Marek’s home, in England. Alex gets a rare chance to talk to Sera, who sent her a present- Naomi. (Side note- maybe this means that Naomi will get her own book.) Naomi is here looking for her missing cousin, Eva who just so happened to once be madly in love with Marek. When he finds out she is missing, things get serious. The hunt for the blood orb gets even more dangerous as a new assassin is after Alex- why? Is it because of who she is? What she is? Or maybe it is her connection to Logan.

The chemistry between Logan and Alex is off the chart in this book. Two people have never been more suited for each other. As an assassin Logan is deadly, as an assassin in love he is legendary. Nothing and no one can hurt Alex. I love the fact that he lets her jump into danger, I adore the fact that she is non-judgmental of his lifestyle. They both accept and love one another.

Alex cares deeply about the missing hybrids. She will stop at nothing to find them. Because she cares, Logan cares. She is good for him. Alex rushes ahead with an action plan, she is reckless. Because Logan has to have a plan, she plans. He is good for her. The changes that occur are scary- yet they face them together. Logan’s mom, yeah she is evil. Yeah she masterminded her own son’s powers. You gotta hand it to the woman though, she has style. That last chapter…yeah she has style.

The action in this one is face-paced, spot-on. You honestly will not be able to put it down. If you like an action book, with a good plot and great chemistry that is. I am enjoying this series and cannot wait for the next book to come out.

My Rating 4 out of 5 stars

Elizabeth Tanner is no Tinkerbell, and her life is no fairy tale. Broke and drowning in student loans, the one thing she wants more than anything is a scholarship from the Trinity Foundation. But after the ancient Irish text she's studying turns out to be more than just a book, she becomes their prisoner instead. And when Trinity reveals Elizabeth is half-Fae, she finds herself at the center of a plot to save the magical races of Ireland from a brutal civil war.

As Commander of Trinity's elite warriors, Finn O'Connell isn't used to having his authority challenged. He doesn't know whether to punish or protect the infuriating young woman in his custody. When he discovers the Dark Fae want to use Elizabeth's abilities to control the source of all power in the universe, he'll risk everything to help her.

At the mercy of Trinity and enslaved to the Dark Fae, Elizabeth finds herself alone on the wrong side of an Irish myth thousands of years in the making. Refusing to be a pawn in their game, Elizabeth has to fight her way back to the man she loves, but to do so, she must wage her own war against the magic that binds her.

THROUGH THE VEIL will be available February 22nd 2016 through Entangled Publishing.

Book 1 of the Aisling Chronicles Series

My Opinion

When we first meet Elizabeth she is, a student in a Master’s program in Irish folklore, translating a book- The Book of Arranmore. Her mentoring professor has just passed away, she is broke and well life is just not grand. There is something strange about the book. Either it is strange or Elizabeth is going insane because the pictures keep moving. Unfortunately before she could explain it to her new mentor something pops out of the book and kills him. All of this happening right in front of a person with connections to the Trinity Foundation- she was hoping to get a scholarship from them. The Foundation though is a front for an elite fighting group the Fianna, Finn is one of their best fighters. He takes Elizabeth back to their headquarters, to heal. Or at least that is what he claims.

The book is enchanted, Elizabeth is in danger. Not only from an evil fae, but from her own grandparents. Her mother was a fae princess, which makes her a half princess. Since her mother ran away from her marriage contract, Elizabeth must marry the horrible man instead. Finn tries to stop it but can’t will they ever be together, can they be together?

I can’t really talk about Elizabeth without talking about Finn. Their romance did not do it for me. Can’t really figure out why, only thing I could think of was the insta-love connection felt off to me. I didn’t feel like they had a deep connection- at least one deep enough to risk one’s life. Both of them are wishy-washy when it comes to emotional entanglements. Theirs’ is a forbidden love, so a secret love- only Elizabeth doesn’t know it’s forbidden. Talk about Elizabeth getting a bit of a shock when she found out. Elizabeth’s forced marriage is brutal, a little graphic and well pretty horrible. Personality wise, Elizabeth has a lot of internal dialog, none of which is positive. Finn goes back and forth so much so that I got whiplash just reading it. I really couldn’t get a good read on him at all. Elizabeth did show some strength about midway through the book, just to have it taken away at the end.

This book has a lot of Irish fae lore in it. I enjoyed that aspect of the book. It was interesting to see all of the different factions beyond the veil. I liked learning the politics of everything that is going on. Even though I liked the lore, the politics, the fairytale part of the book- the book itself is long, 400 pages. It did not read fast pace for me either, so I felt every one of the 400 pages.

Through the Veil is an interesting start to a series that I hope will rock my socks off in the next installment. While my world didn’t tilt while reading this one, my interest is peaked and I want to know more. Specifically what is up with her momma- Niamh. Alive? Dead? Caught in a trap?

Cover Reveal: Hunter

HUNTERBANNER

Born into blood, I was a mafia princess. Raised in hiding, I was a Californian sweetheart.

The day my father sold my thirteen year old body to pay off a five year old debt was the day my mother stole me in the dead of night. She protected me as she was supposed to.
My father may have been the king, but my mother was the queen.

The mafia blood was hers.

That was ten years ago. Now… the devil was on the loose.

Carlo ‘Hunter’ Rosso was my father’s right hand man and the boy I’d loved since I could tie my own shoelaces. He was always the most ruthless and the most deadly of all the children.

He’d thought I was dead until the day his assignment was given: Kill Adriana and Alexandria Romano. Kill the princess, and definitely kill the queen.

What he didn’t know was that the queen was dead, and the princess had taken her throne.

Blood didn’t lie. It smeared, distorted, stained. But it didn’t lie.

My father was going to learn the hard way that the empire he’d stolen belonged to me.

And so did Carlo ‘Hunter’ Rosso.

“Staying, are you? Figure it's easier to kill me in my sleep?”

Once again, he rubbed his hand across his face. He said nothing.

“Trying to work out whose life is worth more, right? Mine is probably worth a lifetime of comfort for you. Kill me and everyone's happy, right? My pathetic excuse for a father gets to keep his empire and you're taken care of for life.”

He looked at me, and his expression was a little tortured. I was being harsh. I knew that. But I needed to be. It was easier to provoke him and be angry with him than give in to the horrible ache that had settled in my heart.

“Adriana...” Weak. The word was weak.

I wanted to ignore the indecision on his face, but I couldn't.

He was considering it.

He really was.

I scoffed quietly at him and grabbed the gun from the coffee table. His mask and gloves fell to the floor, but he made no move to pick them up. The safety was on the gun, and I held it out to him. “Here. Take it. I don't care, Hunter. I don't have much of a life here in hiding anyway.”

He didn't even look at the gun. His silvery gaze never left mine. I wished he would look away, because in that gaze, I saw the Hunter I knew. The boy who once ripped his favorite shirt to stem the bleeding when I fell and cut my leg, then proceeded to carry me home. The boy who offered to pee on my foot when I got stung by a jellyfish in Mexico on vacation when I was seven.

The boy I loved before I knew what love even was.

“You're weak, Hunter,” I whispered. Slowly, I turned the gun back to me and touched the barrel to my temple the way he did earlier. His jaw clenched when my thumb edged toward the safety, and when my finger moved to hook around the trigger, he moved.

He was like a lightning bolt. He came at me like a flash, snatched the gun from my hand, and dropped it on the sofa. It bounced but stayed on the seat, and then he turned on me with blazing eyes. “Don't,” he ground out, his arms tensing and looking even bigger. “Don't ever fucking put that to your head again.”

“Why? I was saving you the job.”

The words had barely left my lips when he pounced on me. It was deadly, the way his hands clasped my face and his mouth descended on mine. I staggered back into the wall, gasping at the ferocity of his movement. Shock paralyzed me as he kissed me harshly. His tongue ran along the seam of my mouth, and as I fisted the sides of his shirt, I bit his lower lip.

A low growl left his throat, but he didn't relent. He just kissed me harder. He kissed me until I was fucking spinning and could barely string two thoughts together. Until my whole body was alight with his touch and responding to his every movement.

He tasted like whiskey. The strong, rich taste that lingered on his lips was heady and only added to the intoxicating way he touched me.

And then... It hit me. He was touching me. Kissing me.

Twenty minutes ago, he could have killed me.       huntertease1

Waiting on Wednesday (8) Because of Miss Bridgerton

Hey y'all, thanks so much for stopping by my WoW!

Waiting On Wednesday is a weekly meme, hosted by Jill at Breaking the Spine which spotlights upcoming releases that we're eagerly anticipating.

Sometimes you find love in the most unexpected of places...

This is not one of those times.

Everyone expects Billie Bridgerton to marry one of the Rokesby brothers. The two families have been neighbors for centuries, and as a child the tomboyish Billie ran wild with Edward and Andrew. Either one would make a perfect husband... someday.

Sometimes you fall in love with exactly the person you think you should...

Or not.

There is only one Rokesby Billie absolutely cannot tolerate, and that is George. He may be the eldest and heir to the earldom, but he's arrogant, annoying, and she's absolutely certain he detests her. Which is perfectly convenient, as she can't stand the sight of him, either.

But sometimes fate has a wicked sense of humor...

Why I am waiting?

I use to read a lot of historical romance- when I did Julia Quinn was one of my favorite authors. She still is and I read anything she publishes. The series that I loved was about the Bridgertons and well this is is about one of them- a prequel if you will.

Review: Chosen Fool

Author Scarlett Dawn
Format e-Book
Print Length 252 pages
Publisher Self
Published Feb. 5, 2016

The second saga in the bestselling, Forever Evermore series continues with Chosen Fool, where deception runs deep and Caro’s transitioning life turns even more deadly…

Caroline Jules has received news of a lifetime. She’s going to be Queen to ‘her’ people. Instead of running, as any sane criminal would, she faces the mêlée with all the wits and savvy that her difficult life has honed. With her best friend, Sin, at her side, Caro pushes past the animosity her power inevitably brings, and prepares to rewrite her future.

Until the night Sin leaves, and she is alone.

Now, Caro must face the Royal world and all its intrigues and intricacies by herself. People aren’t always as they appear—and danger lurks behind even the most pleasant face. When a threat not even the Elders can handle puts her new tribe in danger, Caro takes matters into her own hands. Armed with the power of the mysterious spirit Elementals, Caro’s determined to eliminate the evil ransacking the Mysticals. All she needs is time.

But time waits for no fool…and time isn’t as straightforward as it seems.

My Opinion

Chosen Fool is the second book in the Caro sage of Evermore. Caro is the prodgy for the Elemental King. As a spirit Elemental this should not have happen.

Caro is back and better than ever. Her quick razor sharp wit and even sharper mouth will of course land her in a lot of trouble. Yet, she has a heart of gold and will do anything to protect her people. That is the supernatural monarchy and other prodigies. I kinda feel bad for her, she goes on an emotional rollercoaster ride in this book.

The kings and Queens from the first sage start to grate my nerves in this book. When will they learn? It was the same when they were prodigies. Caro is the prodigy now- they need to trust her. At one point she does call them out on it- I literally cheered Wooowhoo Caro! That a gal!

Leric is a major part of the story line. Caro still doesn’t know if she should trust him. Which is starting to get to him, he is making mistakes. Which hopefully will be his downfall. Okay, so not a Leric fan- hated him in the first book, and the first half of this one. Then about midway, I totally start to fall in love with him. Talk about an awesome story line. (I am avoiding spoilers here.)

Sin, oh how I shipped you and Caro! Then you leave. I understand it, I don’t like it. I yeah, kinda feel betrayed just as Caro must feel. You hurt my girl deep with this move. Maybe you were right to leave but with you, you took my shipping of the two of you together.

Chosen Fool really is an epic adventure. Character growth occurs like I have never read before. Relationships get built, torn apart, and rebuilt. The mystery of the big baddie is kinda revealed. The ending was legendary! With lots of OMGs and What the hecks thrown in with a how do we move on from here. Now the tortuous wait for the next installment can begin.

My Rating 5 out of 5 stars

Review: Magic Edge

Author Ella Summers
Format e-book
Print Length 232 pages

Published November 8, 2015

Mercenary mage Alex Dering has spent most of her life killing deadly monsters for only peanuts in return—until the world’s most legendary immortal hires her for a prestigious assignment in Europe. In return for hunting down misbehaving supernaturals, he’s going to pay her a boatload of cash.

But a straightforward slash and burn extermination in Zurich gets a whole lot more complicated for Alex when a gang of vampires steals one piece of a magical artifact that, once assembled, has the power to kill every supernatural in the city. Well out of her depth, she’s forced into a precarious partnership with a notorious assassin, a man as seductive as he is deadly. With a band of killers hot on their trail, Alex has no choice but to trust him—even if that trust could expose her most guarded secret.

Magic Edge is the first book in the Dragon Born Alexandria urban fantasy series.

The Dragon Born Series The Dragon Born Serafina and Dragon Born Alexandria sister series can be read independently or together. Suggested reading order: Mercenary Magic (Dragon Born Serafina, Book 1) Magic Edge (Dragon Born Alexandria, Book 1) Magic Games (Dragon Born Serafina, Book 2) ~ coming soon! And more books coming later...

My Opinion

Alex like her twin Sera, is a mercenary. She was hired two months ago to hunt outlaw supernatural in Zurich, which explains why she is not with Sera and their brother in California. She meets an assassin while in Zurich named Logan, his assassin name in Slayer. There is a group called the Convictionites that want to kill all supernaturals. To do this they have to use some magical orbs that they are collecting. Alex has vowed to stop them. Together they will fight against the odds to save the city and the Supernatural race.

Alex is just as feisty as Sera from the first book. I didn’t think I would like her as much as Sera, I kinda resented the fact that she wasn’t around in the last book. This one explains why and how important her work is. Kinda redeemed herself in my eyes. She really does kick butt and takes names. She is really down to earth and is quick to be open-minded. She doesn’t use her powers for the same reason that her sister, Sera didn’t use hers. This makes for some inventive moves on the battle field.

Logan, the assassin, as a love interest is well fascinating. As an assassin he should be fierce, yet with Alex he is almost loving. There is that scene with the handcuffs so not too loving. The fact that he is willing to team up with her to catch the group that is collecting the orbs does has its appeal. I just hope that he isn’t hired to kill her later on.

The Convictionites, the big baddie in this one is well interesting. They hate magic and all magic users but they themselves use magic items. Hmmmm…. I am thinking there is a back story here.

Magic Edge kept me interested. There were some times when I was like really? For the most part though, it was entertaining. The characters amused me to no end, sometimes that is all that you need.

Review: Love Me, Love Me Not

Author Alyxandra Harvey
Format e-ARC
Print Length 211 pages
Publisher Entangled: Crave
Published Feb. 22, 2016

Dating isn’t easy when you’re in the middle of a blood feud.

Anastasia Vila’s family can turn into swans, but just once she’d like them to turn into responsible adults.

After hundreds of years, they still cling to the blood feud with the Renard family. No one remembers how it started in the first place—but foxes and swans just don’t get along.

Vilas can only transform into their swan shape after they have fallen in love for the first time, but between balancing schoolwork, family obligations, and the escalating blood feud, Ana’s got no time for love. The only thing keeping her sane is her best friend, Pierce Kent.

But when Pierce kisses Ana, everything changes.

Is what Pierce feels for her real, or a byproduct of her magic? Can she risk everything for her best friend? And when the family feud spirals out of control, Ana must stop the fight before it takes away everything she loves.

Including, maybe...Pierce.

This Entangled Teen Crave book contains language, violence, and lots of kissing. Warning: it might induce strong feelings of undeniable attraction for your best friend.

My Opinion

Ana was born into a blood feud between shifting families, the Vilas (swans) verse the Renard (foxes) family. As a swan, in order to get her wings Ana has to fall in love. While falling in love may be on everyone else’s mind, Ana just wants to graduate high school. She does look for love, and she does have crushes- she is in high school- it just doesn’t consume her. The blood feud is getting nasty, and the treaty has been violated. Ana’s only save haven has been Pierce. Pierce a human knows what Ana is, he is her best friend. He just also happens to be in love with her. Ana doesn’t think the love is real, she thinks her magic is influencing him. It doesn’t matter though, because the blood feud takes a turn for the worse. Ana must figure things out before they get out of hand. Pierce is right there by her side.

Things keep happening around town. The Renards are blaming the Vilas. The Vilas are accusing the Renards. No one knows yet but they have a common enemy. I loved the interactions between Ana and Liv. Both trying to be the tough one in their respective families. Both failing. The mystery of what the heck is going on was solid. The bad guy’s rational was well logical, I can't say I blame them either.
Ana is such a cute character! She is constantly stepping in when her cousins or her aunts mess up. She wants the treaty to remain and goes out of her way to make sure that both sides are doing what is right. She doesn't whine but instead faces things head on.  She is a little afraid to use her magic to influence others, so much so that she tries to avoid people who have been around her when she uses her magic.

Pierce wants to tell her that he loves her. Doing so will change everything, and she is his best friend. He isn’t sure how much longer he can stand by and wait for her to fall in love. His little brother Jackson is up to something, something to do with one of Ana’s cousin. Pierce knows he has to protect Jackson and Ana.  Pierce is such as sweet guy.  Rare is it that the sweet guy wins the girl, a fact he knows.  I love his belief in Ana and her magic.

Love Me, Love Me Not is an adorable read. It is told in dual point of view, Ana and Pierce. Which I love. Being able to see inside both of their souls enhances the reading experience with this tale. If you had a bad day, or just need a pick me up this is the book for you.

My Rating 4 out of 5 stars

This Entangled Teen Crush book contains adult language, swoon-worthy kisses, and sexy hockey players. It may cause you to watch a hockey game...or ten.
Sixteen-year-old Claudia Waring has never kissed a boy. Never been popular. Never been to a hockey game. All that’s about to change. Assigned to tutor Chris Winslow, a prank-loving, gorgeous hockey player, Claudia’s perfectly planned life immediately veers off course. And she kind of likes it. But as fun as Chris is, she knows she'll never fit in his world. After his latest prank lands him in hot water, Chris has to get serious about school or lose hockey. Not an easy thing for someone as carefree as the defenseman. The biggest problem, though, is how much he wants to help his cute, buttoned-up tutor loosen up a little. But while confidence has never been a problem for him, around Claudia, Chris is all nerves. Why would a girl as smart as her ever fall for a jock like him?

Corrigan Falls is a hockey town, and Tyler’s the star player. But the viselike pressure from his father and his agent are sending him dangerously close to the edge. About-the-Author2
Cate Cameron grew up in the city but moved to the country in her mid-twenties and isn’t looking back. Most of her writing deals with people living and loving in small towns or right out in the sticks—when there aren’t entertainment options on every corner, other people get a lot more interesting!
She likes to write stories about real people struggling with real issues. YA, NA, or contemporary romance, her books are connected by their emphasis on subtle humor and characters who are trying to do the right thing, even when it would be a lot easier to do something wrong.

Waiting on Wednesday (7) The Great Hunt

Hey y'all, thanks so much for stopping by my WoW!

Waiting On Wednesday is a weekly meme, hosted by Jill at Breaking the Spine which spotlights upcoming releases that we're eagerly anticipating.

Kill the beast. Win the girl.

A strange beast stirs fear in the kingdom of Lochlanach, terrorizing towns with its brutality and hunger. In an act of desperation, a proclamation is sent to all of Eurona—kill the creature and win the ultimate prize: the daughter of King Lochson’s hand in marriage.

Princess Aerity understands her duty to the kingdom though it pains her to imagine marrying a stranger. It would be foolish to set her sights on any particular man in the great hunt, but when a brooding local hunter, Paxton Seabolt, catches her attention, there’s no denying the unspoken lure between them…or his mysterious resentment.

Paxton is not keen on marriage. Nor does he care much for spoiled royals and their arcane laws. He’s determined to keep his focus on the task at hand—ridding the kingdom of the beast and protecting his family—yet Princess Aerity continues to challenge his notions with her unpredictability and charm. But as past secrets collide with present desires, dire choices threaten everything Paxton holds dear.

Inspired by the Grimm Brothers’ tale, “The Singing Bone,” New York Times bestselling author Wendy Higgins delivers a dark fantasy filled with rugged hunters, romantic tension, outlawed magic, and a princess willing to risk all to save her people.

Why I am waiting?

Have you read anything from Wendy Higgins before? If you have then you know why- if you haven't pick up one of her books. Besides who doesn't love it when a princess tries to break from the script of her life?

I just wanted things to go back to normal between us. And she didn't even know they weren't normal; I was the one being weird inside my own brain. for nearly two years now. She had no idea how I felt
about her. Or that it was getting worse.

I needed Pierce more than he needed me, and I couldn't let anything get in the way of our friendship. Not feuds or magic arrows or the fact that I couldn't stop noticing his arm muscles. He kept me grounded in an upside-down word.

Love Me, Love Me Not Kindle Location 1036

Oh Pierce. Oh Ana. You two crazy kids just need to kiss already or at least talk to each other about how you feel.  Something, before one or both of you end up dead.

Review: Mercenary Magic

Author Ella Summers
Format e-book
Print Length 226 pages
Publisher Self ?
Published October 13, 2015

Long ago, the Dragon Born were hailed as the most powerful mages in the world. Today, they are condemned as abominations and have been hunted to near extinction.

Sera Dering has spent her entire life hiding her forbidden magic from the supernatural council who would kill her for the crime of being born. After years of drifting, she’s finally found a new life working as a low-grade mercenary for San Francisco’s oldest monster cleanup guild. She’s safe—as long as she pretends to be human.

But a dark and mysterious power is taking control of mages’ minds, and Sera’s guild sends her in to investigate. To save her city from a magical apocalypse, she must work together with a sexy and deadly mage who represents the very council that sentenced the Dragon Born to death. And if he finds out what she is, she’ll be next…

Mercenary Magic is the first book in the Dragon Born Serafina urban fantasy series.

My Opinion

Sera Dering and her twin Alexandria have lived in fear of discovery their entire life. They have had to pretend to be humans to hide the type of magic that runs through their veins. They are Dragon Born, the most powerful and feared mages around. So feared that upon discovery the council kills any they find. Their magic makes them stronger than regular humans and so they both work as mercenaries. Sera along with her little brother, Riley live in San Francisco. When a member of Kai’s family gets caught up in the mysterious mage magic, he hires Sera to figure things out.

Kai is a member of an old mage family, one of the most powerful families in the magic world. He is tasked with the job of protecting his family. Kai is well interesting. He acts like a rich guy who has never been told no. Wait, he is a rich guy who has never been told no. His very presence causes people to want to please him, and yet Sera does her own thing. That could be what attracts him to her. Or it could be that she is hiding something from him.

Sera is interesting in that she keeps who she is hidden and yet tries to protect the city anyway. She feels responsible for her brother, even helping to put him through school. She is kinda feisty, and well she can kick some serious monster butt. I like her internal dialog; it is extremely sarcastic which made me smile.

Overall, this is a good start to an interesting series. This one sets the ground work for a great romance with only a few swoony moments. That would be my biggest complaint. That and I felt that the ending left a lot of issues still unresolved. Hopefully the next book will answer some things.

My Rating 3 out of 5 stars

Book Trailer Saturday (7) King Hall

Some people believe you can fall in love at first sight. When it comes to books I believe those people. Book trailers are an excellent way to fall in love at first sight. I hope to feature a book trailer here every Saturday to help you fall in love at first sight...

A fresh, meaty, sink-your-teeth-in-and-hold-on-tight new adult fantasy series kicks off with King Hall…

King Hall — where the Mysticals go to learn their craft, get their degrees, and transition into
adulthood. And where four new Rulers will rise and meet their destinies.

Lily Ruckler is adept at one thing: survival. Born a Mystical hybrid, her mere existence is forbidden, but her nightmare is only about to start. Fluke, happenstance, and a deep personal loss finds Lily deeply entrenched with those who would destroy her simply for existing — The Mystical Kings. Being named future Queen of the Shifters shoves Lily into the spotlight, making her one of the most visible Mysticals in the world. But with risk comes a certain solace — her burgeoning friendships with the other three Prodigies: a wicked Vampire, a wild-child Mage, and a playboy Elemental. Backed by their faith and trust, Lily begins to relax into her new life.

Then chaos erupts as the fragile peace between Commoners and Mysticals is broken, and suddenly Lily realises the greatest threat was never from within, and her fear takes on a new name: the revolution.

Review: The Sharpest Blade (Shadow Reader #3)

Author Sandy Williams
Format e-book
Print Length 320 pages
Publisher Ace
Published December 31, 2013

Torn between two worlds.
Torn between two lives.

McKenzie Lewis’s ability to read the shadows has put her—and …those she loves—in harm’s way
again and again. The violence must end, but will the cost of peace be more devastating than anyone ever imagined?

After ten years of turmoil, the life McKenzie has always longed for may finally be within her grasp. No one is swinging a sword at her head or asking her to track the fae, and she finally has a regular—albeit boring—job. But when a ruthless enemy strikes against her friends, McKenzie abandons her attempt at normalcy and rushes back to the Realm.

With the fae she loves and the fae she’s tied to pulling her in different directions, McKenzie must uncover the truth behind the war and accept the painful sacrifices that must be made to end it. Armed with dangerous secrets and with powerful allies at her side, her actions will either rip the Realm apart—or save it.

My Opinion

This book begins as soon as the previous one ends. McKenzie’s life is completely changed due to an incident in the last book. Not only her life but all of her relationships as well. Due to Kyol’s actions, everything has changed. I can’t help but wonder if it needed to though.

Aren clearly had issues accepting the life bond between McKenzie and Kyol. I think he was right in giving her space. She of course hated it but the life bond means that her and Kyol will feel each other always. How weird would that be? I mean if your ex-boyfriend could feel every emotion you feel? Like every emotion- even those that you have with your sweetheart? I can see how it would weird someone out. Plus, in his world a life-bond is extremely special.

McKenzie felt off in this book, at times just acting whiney. She does figure out what is going on. She does help the realm. I just wasn’t feeling as attached to her as I did in the first two books. Mainly, I felt that she didn’t attempt to understand the two guys in her life- Aren or Kyol.

Kyol, oh how I wanted to cry for you. Everything you have does has been done out of your sense of honor. Yet, being honorable hasn’t really paid off for you. I can imagine how you must feel loving McKenzie and yet not being with her. I don’t know how you are handling the life bond, especially the emotional side of things.

The Sharpest Blade does wrap things up and brings to the close for us the story of the Shadow Reader. I just felt that there was something missing. Not really sure what it was, just know that it wasn’t there. I enjoyed the series and do recommend it.

My Rating 3 out of 5 stars

Swoon Thursday (6) Mercenary Magic

The fabulous girls over at YA Bound created this super HOT meme. Here's how it works.
From the book you’re currently reading, or one you just finished, tell us what made you SWOON. What got your heart pounding, your skin tingling, and your stomach fluttering.

Shout it out on Twitter with the hashtag #YABound, post it here in the comments, or grab the adorable button above and share it on your blog! I want to know & so do the gals at YABound.

Kai pulled her against him, swallowing her words whole. His tongue plunged into her oen mouth, his kiss hard and urgent.
Mercenary Magic Page 104

The three of them looked really uncomfortable squished into the backseat of the car, but when Kai had told them to sit there, they hadn't even blinked.

"He pretends to be callous, but he's actually very reasonable. And he's always really careful not to damage anything," said Callum.

"The roof of Acceleration Magic," she reminded them. "Or should I say, what's eft of the roof of Acceleration Magic?

"A minor miscalculation while shifting, I'm sure," Tony said.

Mercenary Magic Page 148

The first swoon is just because Kai can kiss.   The second one is the one that won me over- his own men are trying to convince her that he is a great guy.  Not because he asked them to but because they believe in how good he is.

Waiting on Wednesday (6) Lady Midnight

Hey y'all, thanks so much for stopping by my WoW!

Waiting On Wednesday is a weekly meme, hosted by Jill at Breaking the Spine which spotlights upcoming releases that we're eagerly anticipating.

Los Angeles. It’s been five years since the events of the Mortal
Instruments when Nephilim stood poised on the brink of oblivion and Shadowhunter Emma Carstairs lost her parents. After the blood and violence she witnessed as a child, Emma has dedicated her life to to discovering exactly what it was that killed her parents and getting her revenge.

Raised in the Los Angeles Institute with the Blackthorn family, Emma is paired as a parabatai with her best friend, Julian Blackthorn. A series of murders in the city catch her attention — they seem to have the same characteristics as the deaths of her parents. Could the murderer be the same person? And her attention isn’t the only one caught: someone has been murdering Downworlders as well. The Fair Folk make a deal with the Institute: if the Blackthorns and Emma will investigate the killings, they’ll return Mark Blackthorn to his home. The catch: they have only two weeks to find the killers. Otherwise it’s open war between faeries and Nephilim.

The Shadowhunters of the Institute must race against time to catch the killers, even as they begin to suspect the involvement of those closest to them. At the same time, Emma is falling in love with the one person in the world she’s absolutely forbidden by Shadowhunter Law to love. Set against the glittering backdrop of present-day Los Angeles, Emma must learn to trust her head and her heart as she investigates a demonic plot that stretches from the warlock-run nightclubs of the Sunset Strip to the enchanted sea that pounds the beaches of Santa Monica.

Why I am waiting?

A chance to get back into the Shadowhunters world? The Blackthorn family? What happens to Mark? This is one that has been a long time wait for a lot of us.

"God, just... just stop telling me what I want! And don't give upon us so easily."

"You think this is easy?" he says, agitation sliding into his voice.

"Do you think I like knowing that he knows where you are every second of the day? That he knows when you're in trouble, when you're sad or scared?" He grabs my arms then gently pushes me back against the stone facade.

Aren is breaking my heart right now, along side McKenzie's. I understand I do, I just want him to not break it it.
