“You’re a wonderful dancer, Ria.”

“Mademoiselle Geraldine’s takes such things seriously.”

“Ah. And how many ways do you know to kill me, while we dance?”

“Only two, but give me time.”

“You have lovely eyes. Has anyone ever told you that?”

“What rot. They are a muddy green. What are you about, Lord Mersey?”

Felix sighed, looking genuinely perturbed. His air of ennui was shaken. “I am trying to court you. Truth be told, Miss Temminnick, you make it ruddy difficult!”

“Language, Lord Mersey.” Sophronia felt her heart flutter strangely. Am I ready to be courted?

Felix is actually trying to court Sophronia? Oh my... I cannot wait to read how this turns out.

Review: Anomaly

Author Tonya Kuper
Format e-ARC
Print Length 400 pages
Publisher Entangled Teen
Published Nov. 25, 2014

Reality is only an illusion.
Except for those who can control it…
Worst. Birthday. Ever.

My first boyfriend dumped me—happy birthday, Josie!—my dad is who knows where, I have some weird virus that makes me want to hurl, and now my ex is licking another girl’s tonsils. Oh, and I’m officially the same age as my brother was when he died. Yeah, today is about as fun-filled as the swamps of Dagobah. But then weird things start happening…

Like I make something materialize just by thinking about it.

When hottily-hot badass Reid Wentworth shows up on a motorcycle, everything changes. Like, everything. Who I am. My family. What really happened to my brother. Existence. I am Oculi, and I have the ability to change reality with my thoughts. Now Reid, in all his hotness, is charged with guiding and protecting me as I begin learning how to bend reality. And he’s the only thing standing between me and the secret organization that wants me dead…

My Opinion

Josie is not having a good day. She is missing her daddy, her momma is stern and her boyfriend is now an ex. To top it off she finds out she is an anomaly. There are those in this world who belong to the Oculi. Oculi either push reality (create from observation) or retract (erase matter with a thought). Josie finds out that she is an Anomaly- she can do both.

Reid is a stranger to Josie, yet she feels a connection to him. He knows so much about her though one can’t help but wonder why. The mystery is solved about half-way through the book as to why he knows her secrets. One thinks that Reid is training Josie for the Consortium but in fact he is training her for the resistance. The resistance thinks that the Consortium is corrupt and trying to take over. As an anomaly Josie is given a special task- one that she must complete or else all Oculi could be at risk.

Josie is an interesting heroine- she kinda reminded me of Bones from Bones, the tv show. At times she is awkward, yet she rocks with all things science. Josie has to face her fears before she can complete the mission. I wouldn’t wish this on anyone. Reid tries to remain impartial to what is happening between them and just train her. Yet when the going gets tough his emotions get in the way. I felt at times he was trying too hard to be just what she needed, while avoiding the emotional side of things. Eventually the emotions catch up with them. This is where the fireworks begin to sparkle.

The pop culture references sprinkled throughout the book were a nice addition. With a cliffhanger ending Anomaly, cannot help but leave the reader wanting more.

My Rating 4 stars out of 5

Waiting on Wednesday (12) The Fill-In Boyfriend

Hey y'all, thanks so much for stopping by my WoW!
Waiting On Wednesday is a weekly meme, hosted by Jill at Breaking the Spine which spotlights upcoming releases that we're eagerly anticipating.

When Gia Montgomery's boyfriend, Bradley, dumps her in the parking lot of her high school prom, she has to think fast. After all, she'd been telling her friends about him for months now. This was supposed to be the night she proved he existed. So when she sees a cute guy waiting to pick up his sister, she enlists his help. The task is simple: be her fill-in boyfriend— two hours, zero commitment, a few white lies. After that, she can win back the real Bradley.

The problem is that days after prom, it's not the real Bradley she's thinking about, but the stand-in. The one whose name she doesn't even know. But tracking him down doesn't mean they're done faking a relationship. Gia owes him a favor and his sister intends to see that he collects: his ex-girlfriend's graduation party — three hours, zero commitment, a few white lies.

Just when Gia begins to wonder if she could turn her fake boyfriend into a real one, Bradley comes waltzing back into her life, exposing her lie, and threatening to destroy her friendships and her new-found relationship.

Why am I waiting?

Begin dumped hours before prom, how did she not curl up into a ball and cry her eyes out. Prom night is one of those special events girls dream about for years or at least for months. I like that Gia didn't take the break-up as devastating but instead had a back-up plan.

"I'm not usually spoken about as if I'm possession," I said.

"You should date more," he said.

I snorted. Well, funny. A top reason to spare the life of a paranormal was humor, I'd give him that. he would have to be funnier for me not to kill him, of course, but we had only just met. He had time.

"If i were a possession," I conceded, "I'd like to think I'd be too expensive for the average purchase."

"As it happens, Radvarious is very wealthy," said the vampire. A touch of amusement laced his words. Ability to appreciate a joke especially one of mine- even if I wasn't entirely kidding- was another good reason not to rip his throat out and walk away.

Review: When

Author Victoria Laurie
Format e-ARC
Print Length 336 pages
Publisher Disney-Hyperion
Published January 13, 2015

Maddie Fynn is a shy high school junior, cursed with an eerie intuitive ability: she sees a series of unique digits hovering above the foreheads of each person she encounters. Her earliest memories are marked by these numbers, but it takes her father’s premature death for Maddie and her family to realize that these mysterious digits are actually death dates, and just like birthdays, everyone has one.

Forced by her alcoholic mother to use her ability to make extra money, Maddie identifies the quickly approaching death date of one client's young son, but because her ability only allows her to see the when and not the how, she’s unable to offer any more insight. When the boy goes missing on that exact date, law enforcement turns to Maddie.

Soon, Maddie is entangled in a homicide investigation, and more young people disappear and are later found murdered. A suspect for the investigation, a target for the murderer, and attracting the attentions of a mysterious young admirer who may be connected to it all, Maddie's whole existence is about to be turned upside down. Can she right things before it's too late?

My Opinion

Maddie grew up different than normal people. She grew up seeing a set of number above someone’s head. These numbers are apparently their death date. Only no one figured this out until her daddy passed away. This leads to her momma drinking too much and Maddie having to provide for the family. Maddie does this by reading the numbers for people. When she tells a socialite that her cancer ridden daughter will survive, the woman is internally grateful- that is until Maddie tells her that her healthy son will soon die. This eventually makes her the prime suspect in his murder investigation.

Maddie is surprisingly well-adjusted for someone who sees death dates. She is determined not to let her gift swallow her up whole like it did her momma. She keeps a journal of clients and dates that she sees to help ground her and relies heavily on her uncle and best friend.

Speaking of things getting tough oh boy do they ever as bodies begin to add up they are corresponding with dates in the journal. This leads to the FBI thinking that Maddie and her bestie have their own nefarious objectives. If only they could believe her. Can they work together to capture the serial killer or will the FBI try to pen the deaths on Maddie?

When is a suspenseful psycho thriller that has the reader guessing who done it until the very end. What is the serial killers end game? What motivates them? And for the love of all that is holy- why is all the evidence pointing to Maddie?

Overall, if you are looking for a book with a who done it kinda feel this is the book for you. If you are looking for a book with a who done it kinda feel and romance this is not the one for you. There is no romance in this one, there is a few references to a crush but that is about it. If you are looking for a book written in reality again this is not the one for you. Case in point- most states have an anti-bullying law on the books for schools to follow. Maddie is getting visibly bullied in front of her teachers and none of them do anything. This is against the law and the teachers would lose their certificate if this were to happen where I am.

My Rating 3 out of 5 stars

Review: Blood Assassin

Author Alexandra Ivy
Format e-ARC
Print Length 405 pages
Publisher Zebra
Published December 30, 2014

They are the outcasts of humanity. Blessed with power. Cursed by fate. Driven by passion. The Sentinels have returned. . .

Out Of The Shadows

At six-foot-three and two-hundred-fifty pounds, Fane is a natural born guardian. A flawless mix of muscled perfection and steely precision, he has devoted years of his life to protecting a beautiful necromancer. But after she found love in the arms of another, Fane has been a warrior adrift. He swears allegiance only to the Sentinels. And no woman will ever rule his heart again. . .

Into The Fire

Not only a powerful psychic, Serra is that rare telepath who can connect to minds through objects. When the daughter of a high-blood businessman is kidnapped, Serra agrees to help. But when she stumbles onto a conspiracy involving secrets sects and ancient relics, her life is in mortal danger--and Fane is her only hope. Is the warrior willing to risk his body, his soul, and his heart, for Serra? Or will one last betrayal destroy them both?

My Opinion

Serra is a psychic of unparallel abilities, Fane a Sentinel who holds her in his heart but never in his arms. After the events of Out for Blood Fane has been dealing with his broken bond the best way he knows how- by asking for a transfer. He does this without telling Serra, so it makes sense that she is spitting mad. At least it would make sense if they were together but Fane won’t allow that due to some internal personal issues. After she confronts him she vows she is done- done with Fane. If he can’t man-up and deal with what is between them well enough is enough.

Unfortunately a child is kidnapped and one powerful highblood will stop at nothing to find his daughter. Serra is mind-knapped and taken by the high-blood: wither she helps him or she dies.

Fane worried for Serra hunts her down. He has vowed to do all he can to stop her impeding death. All she wants is his heart not his pity. But when he is finally willing to give it will she accept it.

Serra is a hoot of a character. Not afraid to speak her mind and always willing to help. Even though she has poison running in her veins she keeps a positive attitude and does her best to find Molly in time. Fane is an alpha male on a short leash. He clashes with Bass since he has threated the woman he loves. He knows he has to protect Serra all the while convincing her it is not too late for them.

Will they find Molly in time? Will Bass give them the antidote? Will they both admit their love for one another?

Blood Assassin is an enjoyable read. So much so th
at I went back and read the other books in the series. Serra and Fane are easy to relate to and while Bass seems like a bad guy the reality is he would do anything to protect his daughter.

My Rating 5 out of 5 stars

Waiting on Wednesday (11) Cold Burn of Magic

Hey y'all, thanks so much for stopping by my WoW!
Waiting On Wednesday is a weekly meme, hosted by Jill at Breaking the Spine which spotlights upcoming releases that we're eagerly anticipating.

THERE BE MONSTERS HERE…

It’s not as great as you’d think, living in a tourist town that’s known as “the most magical place in America.” Same boring high school, just twice as many monsters under the bridges and rival Families killing each other for power.

I try to keep out of it. I’ve got my mom’s bloodiron sword and my slightly illegal home in the basement of the municipal library. And a couple of Talents I try to keep quiet, including very light fingers and a way with a lock pick.

But then some nasty characters bring their Family feud into my friend’s pawn shop, and I have to make a call—get involved, or watch a cute guy die because I didn’t. I guess I made the wrong choice, because now I’m stuck putting everything on the line for Devon Sinclair. My mom was murdered because of the Families, and it looks like I’m going to end up just like her…

Why am I waiting?

The Mythos Academy is one of my favorite series, and this new series is written by the same author. Hopefully it will be just as good.  The cover is also stunning.

Review: A Curse Unbroken

Author Cecy Robson
Format e-ARC
Print Length 272 pages
Publisher Loveswept
Published March 10, 2015

Fans of Keri Arthur will love the Weird Girls, four sisters cursed with supernatural powers. In Cecy Robson’s latest urban fantasy romance, the search is on for an unholy grail, while evil is licking its wounds—and looking for revenge.

The preternatural world is changing. After a massive magical throwdown tore apart the established order, the dark elements are rebuilding their ranks unopposed. Celia Wird’s world is changing, too. She’s the mate of the pureblood were Aric, and his Warriors are honor-bound to protect her family as she and her sisters recover from unimaginable horrors.

Celia hesitates to reveal the true extent of the Wird sisters’ trauma, but they aren’t the only ones keeping secrets: Aric and the werewolf Elders are tracking a stone that grants limitless power. So is a tough coven of witches. Then Misha, a master vampire with his own plans for the stone, sends Celia after it. Can she and the vamps beat both the weres and the witches to the treasure before it falls into the wrong hands?

Fearing for Celia’s safety, Aric begs her to stay out of the hunt. What they don’t realize is that they’re the ones being hunted. But Celia’s ready to prove that she’s not easy prey.

My Opinion

A Curse Unbroken is an emotional roller coaster ride from start to finish. As the last book in the Weird Girls series, Celia and Aric’s story is finished all the while beautifully setting up Taran’s take of love and heartbreak. This is one reader who is literally chomping at the bit for more.

Celia and Aric have had a rocky start but it finally looks like they are going to get their almost HEA. After Anara’s attack they are finally putting the pieces of their broken hearts together. Aric is patient as Celia comes to terms with the loss of ever having children.

Aric suddenly gets a summons by the Wolf Council at the same time that Celia is called upon by Misha- their tasks are the same. Recover a stone that grants it’s owner their every desire…but at an evil cost. Aric is determined that Celia be safe but she refuses to be a stay at home-mate.

When Celia accidently creates a bond with the stone some cry a foul but the reality is the stone may just need Celia more than it’s enemies need it.

OMG! Taran and Gemini my absolute favorite support couple are going through something that has me very afraid for their relationship. Why oh why does this balanced couple have to have turbulence on the horizon….oh yeah…. So we can read their story. Well done Mrs. Robson well done.

Am I the only one thinking that Bren and Emme are about to get closer than ever? Am I the only one secretly cheering this on?

A Curse Unbroken is just the kind of story that captivates the audience into having a book hangover the next day. Oh you know what I am talking about- you stayed up all night to finish the tale. You only got two hours of sleep and after an entire pot of coffee you stubble to the car to go to work.

Review: Mistletoe Mansion

Author Samantha Tonge
Format e-ARC
Print Length 384 pages
Publisher Carina Press
Published November 10, 2014

Kimmy Jones has three loves: cupcakes, gossip magazines and dreaming of getting fit just by owning celeb workouts.

When Kimmy's Sensible Boyfriend told her he didn't approve of her longing for the high life or her dream of starting a cupcake company Kimmy thought she could compromise – after all, she did return those five-inch Paris Hilton heels! But asking her to trade in cake-making for a job sorting potatoes is a step too far.

So, newly single - and newly homeless – Kimmy needs a dusting of Christmas luck. And, masquerading as a professional house sitter, her new temporary home is the stunning Mistletoe Mansion. Soon she’s best buds with glamorous next door golf WAG Melissa, and orders are pouring in for her fabulous Merry Berry cupcakes! The only thorn in her side is handsome handyman Luke, a distraction she definitely doesn't need. And talking of distractions, something very odd is going on at night…

Kimmy is finally living the life she’s always wanted. But will her glimpse into the glittering lifestyle of the rich and famous be as glamorous as she’s always imagined?

My Opinion

Kimmy and her boyfriend of two years are having a rough patch of things- he wants her to get a serious 9 to 5 job with benefits that will help to move their relationship along. She wants to bake and watch tv instead. She dreams of opening a cupcake ship but does nothing to achieve those dreams. So eventually he has had enough and breaks up with her.

This leaves her homeless when she spots an ad for a professional house sitter. She applies and accepts the job on the spot- her bags are already packed. The mansion is gorgouse with a cute little puppy to boot. This is just what she and her homeless BFF needs- a new start in a rich neighborhood. Too bad the realistate agent doesn’t tell them that the house is haunted.

Kimmy- I will be honest, I did not connect with the main character. She whines a lot, doesn’t know how good she has it with Adam and then gets mad at him when he wants her to pulling her own weight around the house. She is extremely superficial.

Exit long term boyfriend enter new love interest Luke. Luke and Kimmy have very little chemistry in my book. He actually is at first really mean to her but she still falls for him. This is not snarky mean, or defensive mean- this is just plain ole mean. She compares him with Adam a lot and still finds him the better choice- HOW?

Mistletoe Mansion was just not my cup of tea. Others did enjoy it here are some links to two five star reviews.

Waiting on Wednesday (9) The Remedy

Hey y'all, thanks so much for stopping by my WoW!
Waiting On Wednesday is a weekly meme, hosted by Jill at Breaking the Spine which spotlights upcoming releases that we're eagerly anticipating.

In a world before The Program…

Quinlan McKee is a closer. Since the age of seven, Quinn has held the responsibility of providing closure to grieving families with a special skill—she can “become” anyone.

Recommended by grief counselors, Quinn is hired by families to take on the short-term role of a deceased loved one between the ages of fifteen and twenty. She’s not an exact copy, of course, but she wears their clothes and changes her hair, studies them through pictures and videos, and soon, Quinn can act like them, smell like them, and be them for all intents and purposes. But to do her job successfully, she can’t get attached.

Now seventeen, Quinn is deft at recreating herself, sometimes confusing her own past with those of the people she’s portrayed. When she’s given her longest assignment, playing the role of Catalina Barnes, Quinn begins to bond with the deceased girl’s boyfriend. But that’s only the beginning of the complications, especially when Quinn finds out the truth about Catalina’s death. And the epidemic it could start.

Why I am waiting?

The Program was an interesting read and I think that knowing the cause of the epidemic would be cool.

Teaser Tuesday (9) The Ruby Circle

Teaser Tuesdays is a weekly bookish meme, hosted by MizB of Should Be Reading. Anyone can play along! Just do the following:
• Grab your current read
• Open to a random page
• Share two (2) “teaser” sentences from somewhere on that page
• BE CAREFUL NOT TO INCLUDE SPOILERS! (make sure that what you share doesn’t give too much away! You don’t want to ruin the book for others!)
• Share the title & author, too, so that other TT participants can add the book to their TBR Lists if they like your teasers!

“Sydney,” Adrian interrupted, cupping my face in his hands. “Never, ever think like that. I don’t regret anything we’ve faced. Being with you is the best thing that’s ever happened to me, the one perfect decision I’ve made in a lifetime of fumbling and poor judgment. I’d go through it all again to be by your side. Never doubt that. Never doubt how I feel about you.”

The Ruby Circle by Richelle Mead

Oh the last book in any series is always bittersweet.  This is the last time we will see Adrian and Sydney together but never doubt that I would have gone through their adventure all over again if I could.  Just like Adrian, it was worth it.
