Hey y'all, thanks so much for stopping by my WoW!

Waiting On Wednesday is a weekly meme, hosted by Jill at Breaking the Spine which spotlights upcoming releases that we're eagerly anticipating.

Mercenary Kate Daniels must risk all to protect everything she holds dear in this epic, can't-miss entry in the thrilling #1 New York Times bestselling urban fantasy series.

Kate has come a long way from her origins as a loner taking care of paranormal problems in post-Shift Atlanta. She's made friends and enemies. She's found love and started a family with Curran Lennart, the former Beast Lord. But her magic is too strong for the power players of the world to let her be.

Kate and her father, Roland, currently have an uneasy truce, but when he starts testing her defenses again, she knows that sooner or later, a confrontation is inevitable. The Witch Oracle has begun seeing visions of blood, fire, and human bones. And when a mysterious box is delivered to Kate's doorstep, a threat of war from the ancient enemy who nearly destroyed her family, she knows their time is up.

Kate Daniels sees no other choice but to combine forces with the unlikeliest of allies. She knows betrayal is inevitable. She knows she may not survive the coming battle. But she has to try.

For her child.

For Atlanta.

For the world.

Why am I waiting?

Review: Earthborn

Author Leia Stone
Format e-book
Print Length 204 pages
Publisher self
Published Feb. 2, 2018

After finding out about her unique heritage, Sloane is taken under the wing of an Earth druid. She’s told she must learn to control both of her warring powers or they will consume her. She needs a special staff, made just for her, to help channel her unique magic. The problem? It’s only made by one very reclusive elf. She and her team set off to hunt down this elf in hopes of controlling the dangerous power within her. But what she doesn’t know is that she too is being hunted.

My Opinion

Second books tend to be filler books in a series. Which is what Earthborn was, a filler book. The reader gets a bit more background into what is going on and why the druids hunt dragons. The author also gives us a little more about how dragons were created, and why which is pretty on point.

There is a new mentor in town, Isaac and we learn more about Sloane’s hybrid status. She is embracing both sides of her, yet this addition is heavy on the druid side. Pretty sure this one has something going on with Eva.

Both Logan and Sloane have accepted that they are a mated pair. Their relationship progresses but man I still feel like there is a lack of chemistry between these two. Like it is forced or something.

Again, the best thing about this book is the secondary characters.  Nadine, Isaac, Eva even the elf they are hunting for are all more interesting than the main two characters.  Would love a story of all of their stories.

Yeah this one ends in a cliffhanger. Which is a great way to get a reader like me, one who is on the fence about the series to want to continue reading it.  I hate when I review a book and basically say it was okay.  That is really all I can say about this one...it was okay.

My Rating 3 out of 5 stars

Book Trailer Saturday (8) Honor Among Thieves

Some people believe you can fall in love at first sight. When it comes to books I believe those people. Book trailers are an excellent way to fall in love at first sight. I hope to feature a book trailer here every Saturday to help you fall in love at first sight...

Petty criminal Zara Cole has a painful past that’s made her stronger than most, which is why she chose life in New Detroit instead moving with her family to Mars. In her eyes, living inside a dome isn’t much better than a prison cell.

Still, when Zara commits a crime that has her running scared, jail might be exactly where she’s headed. Instead Zara is recruited into the Honors, an elite team of humans selected by the Leviathan—a race of sentient alien ships—to explore the outer reaches of the universe as their passengers.

Zara seizes the chance to flee Earth’s dangers, but when she meets Nadim, the alien ship she’s assigned, Zara starts to feel at home for the first time. But nothing could have prepared her for the dark, ominous truths that lurk behind the alluring glitter of starlight.

Review: Skyborn

Author Leia Stone
Format e-book
Print Length 284 pages
Publisher self
Published Dec. 26, 2017

36694499Alone, on the run, and fighting for her life.

Sloane Murphy thought hiking the Grand Canyon alone after graduation would be an awesome adventure. Until she slips and starts to plummet to her death. Then the unthinkable happens.

After flying to safety and trying to convince herself she isn’t having a mental breakdown, the hunters come for her. She runs, somehow managing to stay one step ahead of them. Until her luck runs out. Now the hunters have her and they intend to kill, not capture.

That’s when he comes for her.

Logan Sharp is the last dragon shifter alive. Or so he thinks, until he gets word that the druids are hunting a red headed female. His team takes her in, sheltering her because there is a truth she must learn: if the skyborn die out, then so does humanity.

But Sloane is hiding a dark secret that she doesn’t even know yet. A secret that could change everything.

(Recommended reading age 16+ due to language.)

My Opinion

As a huge dragon shifter fan, I went into this book thinking I was going to love it. I had already read two separate series by the author, one I loved (she co-authored this one) and one I hated. So there was a little bit of worry on that front. I came out of the book thinking it was okay, interesting enough to continue reading the series but if I miss a release date I would be okay.

Sloane is a bit of an annoying heroine. She turns into a dragon, which is awesome and yet she whines when they want to train her. This is just unacceptable to me- girl put your big girl pants on and deal. She just wasn’t really relatable. She tries to come off as being a strong, kick butt kinda gal but to me it read as she was basic.

Logan is interesting in that he is supposed to be the only dragon shifter out there. He’s not. A fact that he seems to accept a little to readily, especially if he has been on the run for his life for the better part of this century. I mean how does he know that he can trust her, especially if magical druids are after him.

The chemistry between the two fell flat for me. I wanted to see something more, anything more. Just because you are the last two dragons on the earth, or at least think you are doesn’t mean you have to be together. The secondary characters were way more interesting than the main.

There is a lot of potential for this series, and I want to see it reach even half of what it could be. So I will optimistically continue with the series, hoping that the main characters will grow with the word count of the next novel.

My Rating 3 out of 5 stars

Hey y'all, thanks so much for stopping by my WoW!

Waiting On Wednesday is a weekly meme, hosted by Jill at Breaking the Spine which spotlights upcoming releases that we're eagerly anticipating.

In this contemporary YA, a teenager’s favorite literary heroes woo her in real life

The first of two books in an intended paperback original series about a girl whose classic literary crushes manifest in real life. Merrilee Campbell, 16, thinks boys are better in books, chivalry is dead, and there’d be nothing more romantic than having just one guy woo her like the heroes in classic stories. She’s about to get the chance to test these daydreams when she, her best friend, Eliza, and her younger sister, Rory, transfer into Reginald R. Hero High, where all their fantasies come true—often with surprising consequences.

Why am I waiting?

Classic literary crushes manifest in real life…. Hellooo Mr. Darcy. Please have a Mr. Darcy because really who could bet a Mr. Darcy?

Waiting on Wednesday (7) Ace of Shades

Hey y'all, thanks so much for stopping by my WoW!

Waiting On Wednesday is a weekly meme, hosted by Jill at Breaking the Spine which spotlights upcoming releases that we're eagerly anticipating.

Welcome to the City of Sin, where casino families reign, gangs infest the streets…
and secrets hide in every shadow.

Enne Salta was raised as a proper young lady, and no lady would willingly visit New Reynes, the so-called City of Sin. But when her mother goes missing, Enne must leave her finishing school—and her reputation—behind to follow her mother’s trail to the city where no one survives uncorrupted.

Frightened and alone, her only lead is a name: Levi Glaisyer. Unfortunately, Levi is not the gentleman she expected—he’s a street lord and a con man. Levi is also only one payment away from cleaning up a rapidly unraveling investment scam, so he doesn't have time to investigate a woman leading a dangerous double life. Enne's offer of compensation, however, could be the solution to all his problems.

Their search for clues leads them through glamorous casinos, illicit cabarets and into the clutches of a ruthless mafia donna. As Enne unearths an impossible secret about her past, Levi's enemies catch up to them, ensnaring him in a vicious execution game where the players always lose. To save him, Enne will need to surrender herself to the city…

And she’ll need to play.

Why am I waiting?

Review: The Dating Debate

Author Chris Cannon
Format e-book
Print Length 242 pages
Publisher Entangled Crush
Published Feb. 5, 2018

Nina Barnes thinks Valentine’s Day should be optional. That way single people like her wouldn’t be subjected to kissy Cupids all over the place. That is, until her mom moves them next door to the brooding hottie of Greenbrier High, West Smith. He’s funny, looks amazing in a black leather jacket, and he’s fluent in Harry Potter, but she’s not sure he’s boyfriend material.

West isn’t sure what to make of Nina. She’s cute and loves to read as much as he does, but she seems to need to debate everything and she has a pathological insistence on telling the truth. And West doesn’t exactly know how to handle that, since his entire life is a carefully constructed secret. Dating the girl next door could be a ton of fun, but only if Nina never finds out the truth about his home life. It’s one secret that could bring them together or rip them apart.

Disclaimer: This Entangled Teen Crush book is not for anyone who has to get in the last word, but it is for all book nerds, especially those who live next door to so called unapproachable gorgeous guys. There’s no debating the chemistry.

My Opinion

Nina lives in a house that is attached to another house, built by brothers back in the day they rent from the family who lives next door. The mother is never to be seen, the father never smiles and the son, well he is a mystery. Not one that she is too concerned with until one day when she tries to escape her brother’s matchmaking skills. She accidentally stumbles across West (next door neighbor) trying to tell his ex no to the Valentine’s Day Dance that she wants him to take her to. West looks up and sees Nina and blurts out that they are going together. Hence The Dating Debate commences.

Nina is a cute gal with need to read, books are her life, eat chocolate and argue. West is a guy with the weight of his family’s life on his shoulders. What could go wrong? Throw in a closing library, extra credit, opposite sides of the debate and you got the perfect mix of banter and laughter.

I related to Nina instantly, especially once I found out why she hates lying so much. How her momma handled the situation with her dad was masterfully. She was not an absent parent, nor did she take his betrayal lying down. This of course will influence both of her kids. While Nina is a book nerd, it came across a little bit more like a Harry Potter fangirl than a true book dragon.

West’s homelife sucks. I hate that he is more like the parent than his parents. I get why it had to be that way, but I felt bad for him. I understand his need to have an escape room and to keep his homelife a secret. I probably would have done the same thing. I liked that his parent’s behavior is explained in the end, and I don’t know if I would have handled the situation any better than his mother did.

I was looking for an easy read that left me with a smile on my face, The Dating Debate did not disappoint. If you like a fast paced fluffy feel good romance, this is the book for you. This is the first book in the Dating Dilemas series, and I hope the next one comes out soon. I am also hoping that it stars Lisa and Matt, hey a reader can dream can’t I.

My Rating 4 out of 5 stars

Review: Wild Card

Author Rachel Vincent
Format e-book
Print Length 261 pages

Published Dec. 25, 2018

Kaci Dillon is a man-eater.

37120058She’s grown up on the fringes of shifter society, hearing the whispers. One desperate act as a starving, terrified child has made her the first tabby in history with no romantic prospects. But whatever. Eighteen is too young to get married anyway. Still, when she stumbles upon an opportunity to get away for a few days, who could blame her for seizing it?

Justus Alexander is screwed.

Confined to the South-Central territory, awaiting trial for crimes he committed as a traumatized, newly infected stray, Justus has discovered that the tribunal already intends to vote for the death penalty. He has no choice but to run. Too young to touch the trust fund that could finance his escape, he’s betting on a big win at the poker tables—until Kaci, his secret crush, catches him sneaking out and demands that he take her with him to Las Vegas

After a wild night she can’t remember, Kaci wakes up with a ring on her finger, next to a young billionaire who can’t access his fortune until he turns twenty-five—or ties the knot. If she can keep her hands off her hot, charismatic new groom, she can have their unconsummated marriage annulled. But can she really abandon Justus to his death sentence, just to undo her own mistake?

My Opinion

When we first met Kaci she was a young werecat that had attached herself to Faythe. Because of her frightening experience of becoming a tabby with no one around to guide, she had hurt those that she loved and was stuck in her tabby form. Faythe rescued her and took her in, all was forgiven by the council for what she did when she was in shock but not by the guys who were supposed to be vying for her affection. Yep, she is the only tabby without a willing shifter to date. Justus is a willing shifter, but he is pretty certain that he will be sentenced to death since he two hurt people when he was infected with the shifter virus. Before people could get to him and tell him what was going on. Really the council should have some type of protocol for helping others assimilate into their world.

I loved being back in the shifter world, seeing Marc and Faythe as they act as alphas together. Not only as alphas but also as parents. They did raise Kaci for the past several years. She has turned out fairly normal, given her feral status when we first met her. Kaci is smart, has learned the ways of the world in which she stumbled upon and is not afraid to use what she knows. Faythe and Marc raised her to be a good wife to a strong alpha. Now she just needs to find that person.

I feel bad for Justus, his life has not been easy, losing his parents at an early age, for his big brother whom he is close to suddenly distance himself. Then he gets a mysterious fever and the next thing you know his is on trial for infecting someone and murdering someone else (who totes deserves it). Now he hears that he isn’t getting a fair trial. I would probably run too. I enjoy their interactions with each other and their interactions with their alphas. You can tell that they hold Faythe and Marc in high respect and are trying hard not to disappoint them. They both also take their advice, instead of dismissing it which is a nice break from most new adult novels.

The back and forth banter is great at creating an environment of tension. The chemistry between these two is off the charts. I like that they keep it pretty PG-13ish. Which makes sense, they are really young and they did wind up married to each other. I like how Justus handles the situation when he realizes that Kaci may not be on board with the plan as much as he thought she was.

Overall, a fast pace read that allows you to forget your worries and stresses for a few short hours. Kaci’s hatred of the gender inequality is pretty spot and will have you giggling as she is ranting. Justus sweet mannerisms will make you want to make him your next book boyfriend.

My Rating 4 out of 5 stars

Review: Love Between Enemies

Author
Molly E. Lee
Format e-book
Print Length 221 pages
Publisher Entangled: Crush
Published Jan. 8, 2018

Zoey Handler is ready to put an end to her decade-long rivalry with Gordon Meyers. They’ve traded top spot between valedictorian and salutatorian for years, but all that’s over now. Right? But after a crazy graduation speech prank gets out of hand, suddenly their rivalry turns into all-out war. Time to make peace with a little friendly payback.

Step one? Make him believe they’re now friends.

Step two? Show him the time of his life at an epic graduation party.

Step three? Don’t fall for his tricks.

Step four? Absolutely, positively, do not kiss him again.

So what if he’s cute? (Okay, hot.) So what if he’s charming? (Heaven help her, tempting.) So what if he apologizes? (That has to be fake.) She knows the real Gordon. And no matter how much her heart begs her to stop, there’s no turning back.

Disclaimer: This Entangled Teen Crush book contains one epic party, complete with every high-schoolers-gone-bad shenanigan, and two rivals who discover maybe they could be something much more…if only they’d stop fighting long enough to notice it.

My Opinion

Zoey and Gordon have always battled it out on the academic field. Ever since kindergarten one of them has always been second place while the other is first. They often flip flop and are in no way bitter about it until right now that is. You see Zoey comes from money and Gordon comes from well none. So he thought he was a sure bet to win a full ride to the college of his choice. Except Zoey wants to go there her own way, not having her parents footing the bill after all most people think that it was their money that made her number one in the first place. A rumor that Gordon almost all but admits to with his salutatorian speech. A speech that embarrasses and hurts Zoey more than she would care to admit.

Gordon was hurt, he lashed out that the one person he could lash out. Yes, it was in the middle of the auditorium full of parents and students which is unfortunate. Yes, it was not expectant which is also unfortunate. He didn’t set out to ruin someone’s life though. Zoey on the other hand…

Zoey is a gal who has everything but she doesn’t want to ride on the coat tails of her parents. I can respect that. Although, I cannot respect what she did to Gordon to get even with him. I do like how she handled it in the end but to be honest at that point I was so angry over her course of action that it was too late.

Pretty much this entire book took place due to a miscommunication. Had Gordon actually talked to Zoey at the beginning of the school year, in complete sentences there would have been no story. Had he told Zoey what was going on, there would have been no story. Had Zoey explained to Gordon what was going on, there would have been no story.

This was an easy read which was nice, but I never got behind the couple like I did with Fynn and Bray. What Zoey did is not something I could forgive, even though she did redeem herself. Gordon was likeable, and I hope he finds someone else at college that can appreciate him. I fear Zoey will not.

My Rating 3 out of 5 stars

Review: Trick (Origin #4)

Author Scarlett Dawn
Format e-book
Print Length 167 pages
Publisher Self
Published December 5, 2017

The explosive and addicting Origin series by Scarlett Dawn dares the imagination with its next installment, TRICK. Mr. Valentine is back and he's more devious than ever.

Faith Peyton has run out of time to find a husband and her name is selected on Marriage Match by the highest bidder. When she reluctantly knocks on her future husband's front door, he doesn't even live there! The house belongs to the eccentric Alaric Wood, the sexiest man alive.

Alaric Wood isn't a man to be trifled with. His temper is a blood-thirsty beast that shouldn't be awakened. And when a waif of a woman shows up at his private mansion, claiming to be his future wife, he's had enough of the horrors that have plagued his life.

Except a trick can be more than it seems...

My Opinion

Faith’s time is up, she knows she is not made to be part of the Corporate Army and so she must marry. She is ready to be a wife, ready to call a home hers (she was raised in an orphanage). Mainly she just wants to belong. So off to The Marriage Match for her, a company that matches couples based on the highest bidder. The computer matches her with Alaric Woods, so she goes to met her future hubby.

Alaric had no idea that he was being matched, so color him surprised when he opens the door. He is even more surprised when she doesn’t back down and start weeping when he tells her to go away. Instead she meets him grumpy proclamations with peppy ones of her own.

Nothing much frazzles Faith, which is a nice refresher from the previous female characters. She doesn’t come across as hard or needed. She really is just strong, steady. I think her addition will add a bit of peppery sweet personality that the other female characters are missing. She isn’t jaded by her experiences in life and she doesn’t need to stay and fight.

I like how light this one is, Torment really did torment me and so I needed a book that wasn’t too deep in the darkness after what happened.

A lot goes on in this book, so much so that is isn’t really a book about Faith and Alaric but more about what the heck is going on. Who Mr. Valentine is, what is his end game, plus his background are all revealed. So in essence this one really did push the series forward with leaps and bounds. It is looking like the month of March will be lucky as we get the next book in the series, Trap.

He leaned over the center console, and our mouths met in a soft press of his lips against mine. His hand slid over my jaw into my hair and he tilted my head one way and his own another, deepening the contact. Prolonging it. “Oh my god,” he murmured against the corner of my mouth, while my heart slammed against my sternum hard enough that it seemed to shake the whole car.

You gotta hand it to Justus, he sure knows how to kiss.

But then she smiled at me again, and I spared a moment to thank the universe that Kaci Dillon wasn’t a con artist or a gold digger, because in that moment, I would have given her everything I owned to keep that smile on her face. To keep her looking at me like that. As if I—the guy who’d snuck her out of her territory under kind-of false pretense- were somehow the only light shining in her world.

Hmm false pretense....what is Justus up to? And will Kaci be hurt?
