Review: House of Imperial

Author Jaymin Eve
Format e-book
Print Length 236 pages
Publisher self
Published July 15, 2018

Callie has spent her life moving towns every four months in a bid to “stay off the grid." Her only family is a paranoid mother who believes there’s a race of supernatural beings out there actively searching for Callie. A race who could destroy Earth if they get their hands on her. Callie’s never seen one thing to suggest there’s any truth to mom’s insane ramblings, and at the age of eighteen now, she’s grown numb to her reality – she’s never going to have a normal life.

That is, until they move to New Orleans. The moment Callie steps foot into the Quarter, hears the jazz music, feels the soul of the city, the cold shell she’s built to protect herself starts to thaw.

Then they come for her.

Turns out her mom’s stories are quite real, and whatever happens, Callie’s empty world will never be the same again.

My Opinion

I think for me this one suffered from the sophomore book curse. It was good, just not as good as the first book in the series. The aliens are back, with Emma in tow. They are looking for the other three Secret Keepers. Which has Daniel going off to New Orleans to find Callie. Callie has been raised with a paranoid momma and is counting on the days until she gets to leave her. She has no clue that everything her momma has warned her about is true.

Callie is a strong independent woman, with a learning disability. I like that she can literally kick booty and she is not afraid to use her skills on anyone around her. She questions everything, and protects herself from those around her. She is skeptical of everything presented to her. Her relationship with her momma was hard pill to swallow in that I know people who have that type of relationship with their parents. I liked Callie a lot, but Daniel just did not do it for me.

Daniel is the Imperial Overlord Major- his uncle was forced out and he took over. He is the only Overlord Major of the Daelighters guy group. He thinks that Callie is just going to fall in line and do what he wants, boy is he wrong. He has self-appointed himself as her protector. This is a little too much alpha male for me (there were two other Daelighters in line to find a Secret Keeper). Plus, he is very stand-offish, a little too serious all the time. I get that he is the Overlord Major, but goodness is he so woeful and gloomy all the time.

The action was a slow burn in this one- it sparks, then goes away, then sparks again, the fades away again. When the action happens it happens fast and furious. Due to this, Daniel and Callie’s relationship moves from 0 to something in a very short time. I just really hated how they bonded. I just did not feel that they had any chemistry together. She had more chemistry with Emma for crying out loud.

I did enjoy reading this book, I guess I was just expecting more. It does move the story along. There can’t be a war without casualties and the one in this book broke my heart. The next book is about Chase and I have been looking forward to that one.

My Rating 3 out of 5 stars

Book Trailer Saturday (38) The Iron Flower

Some people believe you can fall in love at first sight. When it comes to books I believe those people. Book trailers are an excellent way to fall in love at first sight. I hope to feature a book trailer here every Saturday to help you fall in love at first sight...

Elloren Gardner and her friends were only seeking to right a few wrongs, but their actions have propelled them straight into the ranks of the realm-wide Resistance against Gardnerian encroachment. As the Resistance struggles against the harsh rulings of High Priest Marcus Vogel and the Mage Council, Elloren begins to realize that none of the people she cares about will be safe if Gardneria seizes control of the Western Realm.

With tensions heating up in Verpacia, more and more Gardnerian soldiers continue to descend upon the university…led by none other than Lukas Grey, now commander of the newly rebuilt Fourth Division base. Though Elloren tries to keep him at arm’s length, Lukas is determined to wandfast to her, convinced that she has inherited her grandmother’s magic—the prophesied power of the Black Witch. As his very nearness seems to awaken a darkness inside her, Elloren finds it more and more difficult to believe that she’s truly powerless, as her uncle always claimed.

Caught between her growing feelings for the rebellious Yvan Guriel and the seductive power offered by Lukas Grey, Elloren must find a way to stay true to what she knows is right and protect everyone she loves…even if that means protecting them from herself.

Review: Gone Hunting

Author Cecy Robson
Format e-ARC
Print Length 254
Publisher self
Published October 24, 2018

Discover Cecy Robson’s sensational Weird Girls series for the first time—or go back to the beginning ...

The rest of the werewolf pack might consider Aric Connor to be omniscient and destined to save the world when evil returns to claim it. But for the most part, fifteen-year-old Aric ignores the confirmations of his powers, taking everything in stride until he meets her.

Celia Wird wasn’t supposed to awaken naked in the mountains of Colorado, not when she was just stalking her prey in a filthy alley several states away. She especially wasn’t supposed to meet Aric, the handsome werewolf who comes to her aid.

As a supernatural tasked with protecting the earth, Aric sympathizes with Celia’s dangerous situation. He’s also struck by her beauty and kindness. Yet, as much as Aric welcomes Celia, her arrival isn’t a peaceful one.

Dark forces stir in Celia’s presence, resolute on killing her. Aric and his inner beast are adamant about keeping Celia safe and with them. But there's a time and a place for love, and Aric and Celia might not survive long enough to find it.

My Opinion

I absolutely adore this series. I have done re-reads every time a new book has come out. I so very wish that I could be the bestie of the sisters. So when Robson announced that there was a prequel for the series I was nervous. Then when the blurb stated that it takes place when Aric and Celia are much younger than the first book, Sealed with a Curse, I was confused. I vividly remember the scene in the first book of when Aric and Celia see each other for the first time. It is still one of my favorite scenes from book one. Then I got approved for an e-ARC of Gone Hunting, and I calmly- not really- excitedly sat down to read it. I read it in one night, and it was so good to be back in the Weird Girls world. More importantly, this prequel is amazing.

Aric as a teenager is just as confident as Aric as the alpha male. He is still surrounded by his best friends, who even when they were younger would sacrifice themselves for one another. They also are not afraid to voice their concerns to their future alpha. The insight that we get into all of their lives explains so much. I get why Koda is the way he is, I loved seeing Gemini-still my favorite. Liam is well, Liam and that is a good thing. It’s nice to see how their personalities as grown shifters are influenced by their childhood so much.

Younger Celia is more confident than older one. She hasn’t been polluted too much by the world and life has chipped away at the Weird Girls. Her sisters do not make an appearance in this one, although they are mentioned. Celia’s love for them is evident in her actions.

Speaking of action. The prequel is filled with a lot of it. There is something going on that involves dark forces. Very Dark forces. Aric’s parents are away and so it is up to him and his friends to deal with it. That on top of finding Celia in the woods (who is she and where did she come from)? More importantly on the boys’ minds…is she a threat to Aric? Aric cares nothing about that- he just wants to protect her. More than he cares about his own life. So much so that it is strange.

Aric’s parents are this one and they are perfect for each other. I love how much they protect each other and their son. They are raising Aric to be the right kind of alpha. Rare do you find in a book, a set of parents that care about their kid and worries for him. They put Aric and his happiness first in all things. Liam’s aunt is pretty

This one gave me all the feels- happiness, fear, love, sadness. That ending though- it gave me chills. So good that I started reading the first book again, then the second. I bet you can see where this is going. You need to one-click this one. If you haven’t started the series you need to, like yesterday.

My Rating 5 out of 5 stars

Waiting On Wednesday is a weekly meme, hosted by Jill at Breaking the Spine which spotlights upcoming releases that we're eagerly anticipating...

It’s time for war.

After suffering terrible losses, Henrietta and Lord Blackwood have led their warriors to Sorrow-Fell, a vast estate where only those invited by a Blackwood may enter–and the ideal place to plan a final assault against the Ancients.

It’s time for a wedding.

Henrietta nervously awaits her marriage to Blackwood, but when the ritual to become his bride reveals a dark secret, she realizes that Sorrow-Fell is not a safe haven; it’s a trap. Convincing the sorcerers of this, however, is not easy. So with Maria, the true chosen one, and Magnus, the young man who once stole her heart, at her side, Henrietta plots a dangerous journey straight into the enemy’s lair. Some will live. Some will die. All will be tested.

In this stunning conclusion to the Kingdom on Fire series, Henrietta must choose between the love from her past, the love from her present, and a love that could define her future. While battles rage, the fate of the kingdom rests on her decision: Will she fall or rise up to become the woman who saves the realm?

It’s time for Henrietta to make her stand.

Why I am waiting?

Umm have you read the first two? You would be waiting too if you did. If you didn't but love adventure, love and an epic fight to the finish than this is a series for you.

"You owe me nothing," Gemini says. "Just stay safe."

She watches him. "I wish you could meet my sister, Taran."

Gemini perks up. "Why? Is she pretty? he blurts out.

This time, I'm not the one blushing.

"She's gorgeous," Celia cautiously replies, but then she laughs. "She's also mouthy, loud, temperamental, and completely inappropriate."

Review: Beast Behaving Badly

Author Shelly Laurenston
Format e-book
Print Length 379 pages
Publisher Brava
Published May 25, 2010

Ten years after Blayne Thorpe first encountered Bo Novikov, she still can't get the smooth-talking shifter out of her head. Now he's shadowing her in New York-all seven-plus feet of him-determined to protect her from stalkers who want to use her in shifter dogfights. Even if he has to drag her off to an isolated Maine town where the only neighbors are other bears almost as crazy as he is...

Let sleeping dogs lie. Bo knows it's good advice, but he can't leave Blayne be. Blame it on her sweet sexiness -- or his hunch that there's more to this little wolfdog than meets the eye. Blayne has depths he hasn't yet begun to fathom -- much as he'd like to. She may insist Bo's nothing but a pain in her delectable behind, but polar bears have patience in spades. Soon she'll realize how good they can be together. And when she does, animal instinct tells him it'll be worth the wait...

My Opinion

I do not remember the last time I have laughed so hard reading a book before, especially a shifter book. Ten years ago, Bo saw Blayne at a hockey game and tried to find her, but she ran from him. Ever since then he has been looking for her at every event he has attended. Imagine his surprise when she ends up in the same sports complex as him. Now, take that multiple it by a thousand and that is his shock level when she asks for his help being mean in the rink-the Derby rink- that is.

Blayne is a wild dog/ wolf hybrid, which means that she goes through life on the looking at life on the glass is half full side of things. She is perfectly happy living in a world where she has on rose colored glasses. She is cute, polite, perky, pretty much just fabulous. She grew up without her momma and her daddy taught her how to take care of herself the best way he knew how. This means of course that Blayne has a big secret which gives her mad skills but her perky nature hides the secret from everyone but her bestie.

Bo Novikov is the complete opposite of Blayne, he lives by a strict schedule. This is because he is an lion/bear hybrid with an arrogant side that makes him completely OCD. It also makes him the best hockey player on the Northern hemisphere, maybe even on earth. This allows him to be a complete jerk to everyone one and off the ice.

This is the perfect case of opposites attract and boy do they. The interactions between Bo and Blayne are hilarious. I absolutely love her and she is perfect for the uptight, too tidy nothing ever messes with my life Bo. Bo is just what Blayne needs to realize her true potential and them getting together is a highlight of the series.

There is a bigger threat to Blayne than Bo. That threat is not going to like what they find. The sweet little wild dog/wolf that they expected to find is hiding the fact that she can totally take care of herself. You see, her daddy promised her momma to take care of her and keep her safe and well he has a unique way of doing just that.

Needless to say, friendship get tested. Trust gets lost. Blayne proves everyone wrong- especially those who claim to love her and have her best interest in mind. Lesson learned in this one- never underestimate the perky, sweet, rose color glasses character. They are often hiding behind that perkiness.

This is my favorite book in the series so far. So much so that writing this review makes me want to re-read it. This series came at a time when I needed a shifter series to sweep me away from reality. If you are looking for a shifter series that will make you laugh and want to read more, this is the one for you.

My Rating 5 out of 5 stars

Review: Undercover Attraction

Author Katee Robert
Format e-book
Print Length 336 pages
Publisher Forever
Published November 28, 2017

Scandal. Wealth. Power. Seduction. Welcome to the world of the O'Malleys.

Ex-cop Charlotte Finch used to think there was a clear line between right and wrong. Then her fellow officers betrayed her, and the world is no longer so black and white. Especially when it's Aiden O'Malley, one of the most dangerous men in Boston, who offers her a chance for justice. The only catch: she'll have to pretend to be his fiancée for his plan to work.

Aiden can't afford to let anyone see the man behind the mask. To run the O'Malley empire, he has to be cool and controlled at all times. But the moment he meets Charlie, they're playing with fire. Her slightest touch is enough to send him over the edge. At first their "engagement" was a way to eliminate his enemies. Now he'll do whatever it takes to keep her safe-- even if he has to destroy his own family to do it.

My Opinion

I adored this series, when this book came out though, I had just had a baby and was not reading at all. The first three months were spent with her, and adjusting. It was on auto-delivery and when I finally started reading again it got buried in my kindle. I completely forget about it until one day when I was like ummm... when is Aiden’s story going to come out. So I looked it up on goodreads and it was already here. So off to Amazon I go to one-click and it said it was already purchased. Score! I was totally excited looked on the kindle and it was there. I quickly became emerged in the O’Malley mobster life and boy am I glad.

The O’Malley family along with two other Irish Mobster Families rule Boston. The alliances between the three families is hard won and to be honest hang on by a thread. Families have been betrayed, members have switched sides, and manipulation is the name of the game.

Aiden is the hard nose leader of the family and the family business. A year and a half ago, his daddy stepped down from his position of leader and passed it on to Aiden. With all the family drama going on it has been a really long hard 18 months. His only purpose is to save his family, even it means that his siblings hate him- at least they are safe and still alive.

His little sister, Keira, is on the marriage chopping block, about to be sacrificed for the good of the family name, thanks to good ole dad. Aiden isn’t backing down, he will save her even if it means he has to get revenge with the help of a former cop, with ties to the FBI. He just didn’t count on the mutual attraction that would pop up between him and Charlotte. Charlie and Aiden also share a mutual hatred and need for revenge for Dmitri Romanov.

Charlie has tried her whole life to gain the respect and love of her father, the head of the FBI mobster task force. When she is wrongfully accused of being a bad cop, and kicked off the force she knows she has lost the love and respect that was growing in her father’s heart. That hurt her more than when the other cops beat her in an alley. So when Aiden approaches her for help in his plan for revenge she is all for it.

Aiden and Charlie go together as much as sugar goes with hot tea. Perfectly. The chemistry between the two of them is off the charts. More importantly they both understand each other and why they do what they do. She understands the various masks that he has to play and he understands her need for space. I loved Charlie even more because of her concern for Keira, the friendship that develops between these two is pretty awesome.

Witnessing Aiden fall in love, and his care for Charlie remade this character for me and allowed me to see him in a new light. Before he was the jerk older brother that was ruthless. Here he becomes the ruthless leader who falls in love with someone who is equal. Someone who gives as good as she takes.

I love this series. There really is not much more to say about it. Each story is a different sibling and how they react to the things that are happening to their family. The love they have for each other is pretty amazing, so is the respect they have for each other. Even though not a single one of them can show it to the others. I promise if you are looking for a good mobster series this is the one for you.

My Rating 5 out of 5 stars

Review: Butterface

Author Avery Flynn
Format e-book
Print Length 250 pages
Publisher Entangled Amara
Published July 30, 2018

It’s true. I’m not what most people would call “pretty” and, well, high school was rough. Fast forward ten years and life is good…

Until a bunch of jerks think it’s hilarious to put the “butterface” (AKA me) on a wedding Kiss Cam with the hottest guy ever—and that old humiliation hits hard.

I recognize him immediately. The sexiest cop in Waterbury and totally out of my league.

But then he kisses me.

And we totally forget the room, the crowd, everything.

Then he tells everyone we’ve been dating for months.

Soon everything starts to feel too real, from adorable fights over “necessary” tools to fix my broken porch to surviving a free-for-all dinner with his six siblings to picking up where our last kiss left off.

But there’s something he’s not telling me about why he’s really hanging around, and I’m pretty sure it has to do with my mob-connected brothers.

Because this is not a make-over story, and Cinderella is only a fairy tale…

My Opinion

Gina’s family has mobster ties, she on the other hand does not. She is a wedding planner and stays out of the family business. Her overprotective brothers on the other hand, are knee-deep in the mobster life although they do keep it away from Gina as much as possible. They are overprotective due to Gina not being the prettiest girl around. The book does a very good job of describing her flaws over and over and over again. Ford Hartigan is a hot cop on the fast track to being made detective on the police force. He just needs a big break in the local mob case. That break comes in the form of a dead body in Gina’s house. Now he is on protective duty, where the lines between protecting her from the mob or himself becomes blurred.

Gina is a woman who has come to terms with being without the white picket fence, husband and two point five kids. Instead she just wants to renovate her house and make her wedding planning business successful. Gina’s looks are very dominate in this story. A little too dominate and it took away from enjoying the book. They are also the reason that her brothers are super protective of her.

While Ford is hot, he does have some insecurities himself. He did not follow in the footsteps of his family business- joining the fire department. He has always seen himself as an outsider in his own family and has set himself apart from them a little. His family is loving and supportive so this made no sense- you’ll see them in throughout this book.

Gina’s brothers, friends and Ford’s family is what made me keep reading long past the point of annoyance for how often her face is mentioned. Ford’s co-workers are the worse, so superficial and just need to be brought down a peg or two.

I was really excited about this one, especially when I read the blurb and then the first chapter on a preview. Gina and Ford had a lot of chemistry in the first chapter, which is what got me to read the book in the first place. And while I finished the book, I was left with a bit of disgust in well humanity. I get that people are teased in high school for how they look. I do not think that every minute of every day should there be someone in an adult’s life that talks about her looks so much. This is what made me feel ill, seriously every chapter was about her looks. I get it she has big eyes and a big nose but her body is smoking hot so get over it.

So why three stars? It is not a traditional rom-com. In fact there are very little comedy parts in this book. Instead, I did enjoy that Gina did not change a single thing about herself- no make-over, no chasing after the guy. She just lived her best life. I enjoyed reading it when I wasn’t annoyed at everyone for being so judgy-mc-judgersons.

My Rating 3 out of 5 stars

Waiting on Wednesday (37) Kill the Queen

Hey y'all, thanks so much for stopping by my WoW!
Waiting On Wednesday is a weekly meme, hosted by Jill at Breaking the Spine which spotlights upcoming releases that we're eagerly anticipating...

Gladiator meets Game of Thrones: a royal woman becomes a skilled warrior to destroy her murderous cousin, avenge her family, and save her kingdom in this first entry in a dazzling fantasy epic from the New York Times and USA Today bestselling author of the Elemental Assassin series—an enthralling tale that combines magic, murder, intrigue, adventure, and a hint of romance.

In a realm where one’s magical power determines one’s worth, Lady Everleigh’s lack of obvious ability relegates her to the shadows of the royal court of Bellona, a kingdom steeped in gladiator tradition. Seventeenth in line for the throne, Evie is nothing more than a ceremonial fixture, overlooked and mostly forgotten.

But dark forces are at work inside the palace. When her cousin Vasilia, the crown princess, assassinates her mother the queen and takes the throne by force, Evie is also attacked, along with the rest of the royal family. Luckily for Evie, her secret immunity to magic helps her escape the massacre.

Forced into hiding to survive, she falls in with a gladiator troupe. Though they use their talents to entertain and amuse the masses, the gladiators are actually highly trained warriors skilled in the art of war, especially Lucas Sullivan, a powerful magier with secrets of his own. Uncertain of her future—or if she even has one—Evie begins training with the troupe until she can decide her next move.

But as the bloodthirsty Vasilia exerts her power, pushing Bellona to the brink of war, Evie’s fate becomes clear: she must become a fearsome gladiator herself . . . and kill the queen.

Why I am waiting?

I adore two of Jennifer Estep's series- the Mythos Academy and Black Blade. So when I found out that she was publishing a new one, I put it on my list and check every couple of weeks to see if the release date has moved. It hasn't but I don't have too much longer to wait.
