Review: Touch of Evil

Author Cecy Robson
Format e-ARC
Print Length 209 pages

Published Oct. 13,2020

The award-winning Weird Girls urban fantasy romance series continues to blow away modern fantasy and adventure fans with heart-stopping action and romance. Centered around four unique and powerful sisters, it’s time for Emme Wird, the youngest sister, to step into the supernatural spotlight.

Emme Wird, the healer and powerful telekinetic in the Wird family, hasn’t had the best of luck with males. While her sisters have found their mates and forever loves, Emme has found males that are better left as lost. Is a decent meal with polite conversation too much to ask for? Yes, it is.

When a pack member that Emme has dinner with is discovered dead and dismembered, it is up to Emme and her werewolf friend, Bren, to solve the murder. But spine-tingling danger and touches with evil have ways of bringing close friends closer.

Could the male that Emme searches for be right in front of her? Or will evil snatch him away from her, just as it did once before?

My Opinion

Finally!!! It is Emme’s turn to shine and boy does she in a big way. The youngest of the Wird sisters, the only one without a mate, Emme had been pushed to the background long enough. She is the gentle sister, the presumed meek one, the one with a power that many view as a weakness. While she is the heart of the Weird sisters, many mistake that for her being the weakest link. Home girl is not playing in this book though- those thinking she is weak have another thing coming. Emme knows how others see her, in the pack and outside of the pack. In this tenth Weird Sisters novel, she shows just how kick-butt a compassionate hospice nurse can be.

I have always known that Emme was a force to be reckoned with. This book shows just how fierce, feisty and strong-willed she can be when she needs to be. She is vulnerable, she is hopeful, she is well just amazing. So vastly different from both of her older sisters that her voice sounds completely different. I think that is what I adore about this series. Regardless of who’s story is at the time, the voice is distinctly individually theirs. Emme’s comes off as soft with an iron steel will.

Finally!! Bren, who has been dancing around Emme in the background for a few books now. Always viewing her as too young, he kept his distance until he couldn’t no more. Finding out about his past and why he is the way he is makes way more sense now. I love that we get more of his back story. His voice is powerful, witty and yet humorous. He soon realizes his place in the new pack, and he is quite frankly shocked by it. Which is fun, yet confusing because he did not realize just how up on the ranking he actually ranked. Watching him come to terms with his feelings for Emme was so amusing that you couldn’t help but laugh at him a few times. He really underestimates his worthiness of both pack leadership and Emme.

A murder has happened and Emme was the last person to be seen with the victim. Bren is in charge of figuring out what happened. The big baddie is well different to say the least.

I have looked forward to this book for literally years, ever since the Liam and Emme break up. It does not end on a cliffhanger but it was heartbreaking nonetheless. I hope that the next book fixes this as I am not sure how much more heartbreak Emme can endure. I kinda hope that Taran shows up and kicks Bren’s booty.

Review: Cursed Witch

Author
Chandelle LaVaun
Format e-book
Print Length 454 pages
Publisher Wanderlost Publishing
Published June 30, 2020

What is magic?

My name is Saraphina Proctor...and that’s the only thing I can remember.

I woke up alone, surrounded by darkness with no memory. No one here knows who I am, I don’t fit any of the missing persons reports, and the doctors can’t find a single thing wrong with me…my memory…my life…they’re just…gone.

But something lurks in the shadows in Salem, watching me…waiting. I feel its eyes on my back and my name whispered in the wind. Even in the light of day the friendly smiles around town put me on edge.

Someone isn’t telling me the truth but I will find out what happened to me…and I think Riah knows more than his pretty mouth is telling me. There's a story in those golden eyes of his, now I just need to get close enough to him to find out…

My Opinion

I may be biased… There is no may about it, I am biased. The author of this series is on my top ten all-time favorite authors list. She is on the automatically buy don’t even read the blurb list. . That being said, going into Saffie’s book, I felt that she was going to change things up. The main character for Elemental Magic series, Tegan was a hard-core, sneaky gotta love her kinda character. The main character for Academy Magic, Bettina was a girl next door turned kick-butt, I will prove you wrong kinda gal. So what would the Cursed Witch bring? Especially since the main character was introduced in the first series, Elemental Magic. Well, when her cursed ended at the end of the Academy Magic series it brought with it anemia for Saraphina Proctor, known to those who love and care for her as Saffie.

The breaking of the curse sent Saffie back to Salem, where she woke up with anemia. Which means everything we thought we knew about her was now out the window, which was a game changer for sure. Saffie’s personality doesn’t go away, but it does evolve into a beautifully written vulnerable heroine. Her determination, grit, and positive attitude are still there. She is still learning about the world around her but without the help of the coven, which is fantastic. Please don’t get me wrong I love the coven members. I just appreciate the beautifulness of Saffie learning about herself and who she is without someone saying things like that is not how you use to do it. To circumvent this, two new characters were introduced Gigi and Savannah, who befriend Saffie and show her what she has been missing while cursed (unbeknown to them) to an amusement park for centuries.

Riah is one of my absolute favorite heroes. He is so conflicted between duty and his feelings for Saffie. As a fae knight, Riah has been tasked by the Fae Prince Thorne to watch over Saffie has done so for three hundred years. Can you imagine? Watching over someone for three hundred years, the emotions/ feelings that may develop? Not only that but knowing also that she is meant for another. There is a plan, and he has to stick to the plan. He tries to protect her throughout the book as well as push her away. The back and forth should have given me whiplash instead it was explained in such a way that I completely got why he was running hot and cold. It made sense so much so that I couldn’t image him doing anything else expect what he did. The chapters that were in Riah point of view sets the background for their relationship and how he plays into Saffie’s story.

The author has a way of making sure that the secondary characters have a voice to be heard. They bring an added dimension to this story, which allows their friendship with Saffie to grow organically. Landrea makes the perfect mentor for Saffie, having fostered other teens. The cameos from other Coven members were an added bonus. My favorite being that of Cooper whose presence in this addition shows the growth that a secondary character can undergo throughout a series if the author is just that damn good. This author really is.

When I say this book brought all the feels, I mean all the feels. The first three chapters my heart was racing, my breath was short and I was in a panic. I read this in one sitting and came to regret that decision. It was over way to soon which is saying something since the book was 454 pages long. It ends in a cliffhanger that leaves you asking where the next page is.

My Rating 5 out of 5 stars

There’s a naked werewolf standing in front of me.

Let me kindly explain.

There’s a naked werewolf—a man who can change into a werewolf—standing naked, in human form, in front of me.

They do that a lot, change from beast to full naked glory. Typically, it’s pre and post bloody battle for the sake of the world and to protect its unsuspecting human populace. However awkward, I’m used to it.

“Like what you see?” he asks.

Make that sort of used to it.

He flexes and gives a little thrust to show off what he thinks are some delectable goods and oh, my…he has three testicles.

I slap my hands over my eyes. I take it back. I take it all back. I’m not used to all this.

“Emme,” Ted asks. “Did you just gag?”

I’m not a rude person.

I’m not a liar.

            “Yes?” is my response.

Ted is a lot bigger than me. He’s also stronger and can snap my spine without changing to his beast counterpart. I keep my hands over my eyes. As a nurse by trade, and a supernatural fighter by sheer terrible luck, I have seen things, ugly, frightening, and unexceptionally evil things, and I’ve encountered creatures so menacing mere thoughts reduce me to trembles.

I draw the line at extra testicles.

The sound of slapping and bouncing skin causes me to shrink inward. Ted seems to be putting on quite the show. Honestly, it sounds like a one-man juggling show involving best-left-covered body parts.

I’m tired of dating Teds.

And humans, they wouldn’t survive me or the world my sisters and I were thrown into.

No, in order to be with me you must have something special.

And I’m not referring to what Ted is currently playing with.

My hands slip away from my face when I sense his approach.

“In my world, I’m revered for my virility,” he says to my back.

“Mm-hmm,” I reply. I pity the packmate forced to run behind him.

Ted is either referring to his obscenely large member weres are known for (“They’re built for attracting females,” my perky sister once explained) or the extra semen sack dangling halfway down his thigh. Neither impress me and neither does Ted.

I carefully step over the second of two discarded pizza boxes and make my way toward the exit.

My steps slow as I reach the door.

I turn to me left, then to my right. Something else is here.

Dread and resentment drag their long spindly fingers across my skin and hate coats my tongue.

I’m scared and on guard, and it’s not because of Ted.

Waiting on Wednesday (37) Elemental's Curse (Alice Skye #4)

Hey y'all, thanks so much for stopping by my WoW!

Waiting On Wednesday is a weekly meme, hosted by Jill at Breaking the Spine which spotlights upcoming releases that we're eagerly anticipating.

An untamed witch. A forgotten past. An unknown legacy.

The nightmares might have stopped, but it's just the beginning for Alice Skye.

Newly Independent Paladin Agent Alice Skye is just starting to get her life together. She’s survived a cult, taken down a corrupt druid and things are just starting to heat up with London’s finest bachelor, Riley Storm.

With stolen Fae artefacts, missing hearts and a tight-lipped Detective, Alice must break down Peyton’s barriers, especially since his secret will help find the truth behind several gruesome murders.

But The Council are still watching, waiting as they’re quietly deciding her fate.

Can she survive their judgment?

Or will it be her ancestry that destroys her?

Why am I waiting?

I seriously need to know if Alice and Riley end up together.  There I said it... I am here fore the romance.... Yes, the action is fine and dandy but the chemistry between Alice and Riley.  The tension- is literally off the charts.

Review: Midnight Mage

Author Chandelle LaVaun & Megan Montero
Format e-ARC
Print Length 343 pages
Publisher Wanderlost Publishing
Published July 18, 2020

He put a spell on me...

Or at least he must have, because none of this makes any sense. None of this can be real. I’m not a mage with magical powers…I’m just me. Ellie Sutton. Your average, everyday sixteen-year-old high school human student. My biggest concerns are bullies, failed exams, and missing the express subway twice in one day.

Magic is something I read about in comic books, it’s not real. People don’t move things with their minds or summon lightning with their hands. I don’t care what Stellan Wentworth says. It doesn’t matter that he’s breathtakingly beautiful or that his eyes sparkled when I challenge him. He’s the kind of hero found in romance novels, not my real life. I’m dreaming, I have to be.

Because if I’m not, then what he’s telling me is true. This gorgeous, terrifying world is in turmoil…and if I don’t learn how to use my magic overnight…they’ll all die.

Featuring a kickass heroine, forbidden love, and magic you’ll wish was real, fans of The Mortal Instruments, Twilight, or Harry Potter will love Chandelle LaVaun and Megan Montero’s brand new urban fantasy series!

Pick up Midnight Mage and enter The Night Realm today!

My Opinion

Dynamic Duo and Besties to boot- Chandelle LaVaun and Megan Montero have teamed up to give the world a whole new realm to explore: The Night Realm. I am here for this! Midnight Mage is the first book to release and it sets the stage. The world building is extensive and intriguing.

It’s Halloween and what can some cosplaying high schoolers want more than to win the costume contest at the party of the year? That is what Ellie and her friends are hoping to do, which is why they came to Tyler’s party in the first place. So how exactly did she end up playing spin-the-bottle and who was that guy she just kissed? And some kiss that must have been because all around her the hustle and bustle of New York City has gone quiet. The skyscrapers are gone and who the heck is that chasing her? Ellie’s world just got turned upside down… where is she? And can she really do magic? Enter The Night Realm and find out…

Ellie is proud of her geekdom status, her friends are fabulously hers and they get her. Her bestie is extremely popular, and that is just how Ellie likes it. She can join in and still avoid the center of the stage. Until a fateful game of spin the bottle, which has her stumbling into a different realm. Now although scared, Ellie knows that she has to suck it up buttercup. An evil guy is after her and instead of crying in a corner. Ellie is determined to try her best to master this new magic in her, she wants to survive and get back home.

Imagine growing up in a kingdom that has tyrants as rulers. The kind of ruler that cares only for themselves. Now, add in that those rulers are your parents- who you are ashamed of. Now you have the mindset of Prince Stellan. Yes, an actual freaking prince. Let me tell you, dang… cause Stellan is the whole freaking package. When he finds Ellie in his realm, he has to help her. Help her to know his world, know her power, and know just who he is. Rebellion is coming to his realm and it will take both of them to finish the fight.

The secondary characters at times steal the show, but only for a second or two. Nickle has a big personality, but it doesn’t overshadow Ellie’s. The dukes sense of humor and pure enjoyment of life makes you hope that there is a novella coming out staring them and well you. Melanie’s gentleness with introducing Ellie to the world and her ability to speak geek leave you wondering…just who or what she is. Araqiel’s guidance of how to overcome the obstacles (trying not to give spoilers) is well just hilarious. #Tacosforlife

The world building is spectacularly done, without it being cumbersome to learn. Ellie and Stellan make a fabulous team, one with mutual respect and a fair amount of chemistry. The action scenes are fun, with a fair amount of whole crap who will win in the end. Speaking of endings…holy cliffhanger, batman- so unfair. I seriously kept trying to turn the page on my kindle to find out what happens next.

My Rating 5 out of 5 stars

That's what Astra Meador's famous biophysicist mother taught her.

In fact keeping Astra's secret was the reason her family decided to leave the Earth and join a terraforming mission to colonize a distant planet called Crillain IV. But when Astra wakes early from hypersleep, she discovers that her mother never made it onboard, her father died in transit and his body has been ejected from the ship, and she suspects that she's not the only one awake.

When the ship finally lands and she's reunited with her brother, Nash, Astra hopes to settle into a new life, especially when she meets the charming young engineer, Jax, and is recruited by the mission commander to train alongside his handsome son to be a future leader of the small colony.

Then Astra learns that she's not the only one with a dark secret.

As both young men contend for her affection, Astra searches for answers, trying to determine who to trust. Review: Wicked Lies

Review: Wicked Lies
Author Megan Montero
Format e-ARC
Print Length 359 pages

Published 6/22/20

My power doesn’t lie but everyone else does…

Ever since Beckett Dustwick walked into my life, I’ve only wanted one thing…him. To bad he doesn’t feel the same way. Our soulmate mark tells me we are destined to be together an important fact he lied about. But a broken heart won’t stop me from showing him exactly what I think. He may have started this game, but I will finish it.

Our enemies are growing in number with each passing moment. And the fight for the warlock council has never be more dangerous. It’ll take all of the heirs to bring them down along with their mysterious benefactor. We’re in the fight of our lives and I want to turn to Beckett, to trust him. But he’s been lying to me in a big away and I’ve learned the hardest lesson of all. In the end…everyone lies.

My Opinion

Wicked Lies (The Royals: Warlock Court Book 3) is the third book in the second “season” of The Royals. At the end of Wicked Queen, Beck and Grayson are sent home to sort out their houses (warlock and vampire) this is Beck’s story. While you don’t have to start with the first set of books, I highly recommend it. There will be spoilers from the first season as well as the first two books in this season, Wicked Omen and Wicked Wish in this review- consider yourself warned.

Astrid’s life is going well, pretty great. She is in a school to learn her powers, which are getting stronger. Her human bestie, Tilly is with her- the first human ever at Warlock Academy. She has a soulmate, that is keeping their bond a secret. So maybe her life isn’t so great after all. Why would her soulmate want to keep her a secret? As the saying goes Hell has no fury as a woman scorn, look out Beckett! Speaking of looking out, the warlock council is making a power play. Will the heirs be able to stop them?

The friendship of Astrid, Tilly and Ophelia grow into a beautiful trio of girl power. One hundred percent adore how they are always willing to support the other. Ophelia has no clue what Beckett did to earn Astrid’s wrath; she just knows that Astrid is hello kitty pissed. She jumps to help Astrid with her revenge all the same. Speaking of revenge- our girl sure is creative! I mean, the things that Beckett endures well it would make a wicked warlock proud.

Beckett has a lot going on. The pressure of being the heir that leads the others is getting to him. He has no clue why his soulmate is angry with him. The warlock council is trying to ensure that they stay in power forever. The fallen cannot help him, thanks to the rules. So, the ultimate decision on how to respond to the council is up to him.

The other heirs: Cross is in his happy place, beside Ophelia. Man is whipped and it shows, since they deserve their happy ending no one minds too much. They both bring their A game to the fight. Logan is well Logan. Sometimes he is MIA, I mean dude is dating a warlock. Maze steps up to a whole new level of wicked. He is one powerful warlock! I think honestly, he broke me this time as in I had to step away from the scene, pop some popcorn and take a deep breathe kinda break. What he sees, relives over and over again, a lesser man would not have responded his way. Tears formed, hand over mouth how the heck will they fix this? So many questions…

This one hits the ground running and you do not stop! Be prepared to feel all the feels, ALL THE FEELS because the heirs all bring it this time. The raw emotions that this book provokes will have you sitting with goosebumps on your arms, your hands shaking and tears- yes actual tears-in your eyes. The pop culture references sprinkled throughout the book will make any fangirl/boy heart burst with happiness. That ending, what a wicked ending it is. It will leave you stunned, blinking, thinking what the actual-there is no way it ends here. It does, and the link to the next one says it won’t be here until October.

My Rating
5 stars out of 5 stars

Other People

Maze- one of the five founding bloodlines of the warlock court, physic

“What is your problem? This is my decision,” I snapped. “That may be, but it’s a selfish and cowardly one,” he fired back, fists clenched, body tense, eyes like hazel flames.

I would so love to have a heart to heart with Marnie to explain that the problem was. It is called love silly, and boy does he love you.

Teaser Three

“Very few women refuse me, Marnie. Usually it is my charm that they find irresistible. Or my tales of bravery for the witching world.”

If a guy said that to me, I would refuse him too. What a douchebag!

Taran Wird, the loudmouth mistress of flame and lightning, didn’t want to attend the formal gathering of the supernatural elite. She did so only to help to unite the supreme beings in attendance in one common goal: protecting Taran’s sister, Celia.

Celia is pregnant with alpha werewolf Aric Connor’s child, the same child prophesized to save the world from uprising evil. Evil wants this child dead before he is born and, more importantly, before he can grow strong enough to stop it.

Taran and her werewolf lover, Gemini, put plans in place to protect Celia. Master Vampire Misha Aleksandr and his clan also swear their allegiance to Celia and vow to keep her from harm. The witches even cast protection spells around the manor to curse anyone with malintent who enters. Nothing was supposed to go wrong, except everything did.

Creatures that shouldn’t exist stalk the grounds and invade the premises, and every curse meant to shield the guests turns against them. No one counted on the powerful being who arrived uninvited. But he’s here, manipulating the magic enclosing the estate to work in his favor.

As body counts rise and allies become enemies, chances are Celia won’t survive the night. But evil never counted on how hard Taran Wird would fight, even at the expense of her life.

My Opinion

I have been reading about the Wird sisters (The Weird Girls series) since 2012, every book now is like returning home to see old friends. The Weird Girls series had six books in them, followed by this Flame series a spin off with Taran the loud, vocal, no holds barred sister. This book marks the end of Taran and Gemini’s spin-off. I have been reading about the Wird sisters (The Weird Girls series) since 2012, every book now is like returning home to see old friends. I suggest reading them in order, and since this is the last book in the Flames spin-off there may be spoilers from the previous books.

Celia and Aric cannot catch a break, after all they have been through you would expect at least for them to get their happily ever after and a rocking chair on the front porch. No such luck, their child has been prophesied to bring about peace to the supernatural world and well there are some supes out there that really don’t want that. So there is a supernatural of summit of sorts to find allies to help protect her. Every precaution was taken to protect her, yet evil still attacks the manor. Fate deals them a heavy hand, the creatures they have to fight are well inventive to say the least. Destiny tries to intervene but Fate’s touch may just be the end for them. Will Taran be able to protect the rock of the Wird household or will the sisters fall one by one?

I absolutely love Taran! She was my favorite sister in the original series and so when she got her own spin-off I knew I was along for a fabulous fun filled ride. Throw her spunky, spirited, snarky sailor mouth in and I am there, all day every day. I want her to be one of my best friends and here is why. Over the last nine books you see character development like no other. Not only that, she still retains the elements that made her unique from the beginning. Taran has always been a powerhouse, yet sometimes fear or the opinions of others would prevent her from showing off her kick-butt self. No more! All she needed was her sister to be in danger and the girl comes in with the gloves off, swinging. In this book she is gusty, aggressive and determined to save her sister and her unborn nephew. To top this book sundae off, Gemini, her love interest since the beginning is absolutely the cherry!

Gemini has dealt with Taran’s sweet side, and her nutty side but dang her protective side has not come out like this before now. Instead of holding our girl back, Gemini supports her totally, 100%. Which is well hellva refreshing. Yes, he tells her to be careful then he kisses her and gets back into the fight. The fight last the ENTIRE book! How freaking awesome is that, he doesn’t doubt her once. Not once, which is really hard for an alpha male with his mate. His love, faith and pride in her shines through everything he does. The fact that he understands her and embraces all aspects of her personality makes him the perfect mate for her.

The Wird sisters are squad goals. Seriously, the mixture of personalities, talents and abilities shine through their love for one another. Jealously never ever colors their relationships with each other. Always together, always supporting and fighting for each other. When I say there is a mixture of personalities I mean it. While I love the action, the suspense and the romance: it is the sister’s love for each other that made this entire series for me. That love shines through in all that they do in this book.

OH MY GOODNESS! This one starts off with a bang and the hits just keep on coming all the way to the end. If you want an action-packed roller coaster of a ride, with a little dose of romance and tension mixed in then you need to read this. Adrenaline pumping, nerve wrecking, screaming at the book sprinkled with awe moments sealed the deal, this is still one of my favorite series! Where we will go from here only Cecy Robson knows but I am straight up praying that we find out what is going on between Bren and Emme because something is sure enough going on between them.

My Rating 5 out of 5 stars

Maybe falling in love with a titan was not the best thing you could have done Maisey. I mean, just saying.

Teaser Two

“She told me that there would be a time in the future that you would love me so much you’d sacrifice yourself for me. She told me to walk away, and to do it in a way that would turn your love to hate. If I didn’t, it would be your downfall.”

Wrath of the Gods Kindle Location 844

And like a dumbie you listened to her. Come one Cronus you know better.

Teaser Three

“Hephaestus told me last week, in no uncertain terms, that he would die and kill the entire world before he helped me again. Hence the reason I have not bothered to ask again. He’s also not one we can force the hand of. His fortress is impenetrable, even for me.”

If I was Maisey I would be wondering why?
