Lori Adams gives New Adult a haunting paranormal twist with the first novel of The Soulkeepers, a series that blends ancient legends and new myths with an enchanting mix of thrills, humor, and high drama.

When Sophia St. James learns that she’ll be moving from Los Angeles to a podunk town somewhere in Connecticut for her senior year of high school, she isn’t expecting an otherworldly encounter. But there is more to Haven Hurst than meets the eye: it’s home to a family of Guardian Angels, and she is the only one who can see them in spirit form. Sophia soon realizes she wants to see much more of Michael, an irresistible yet volatile Guardian who seems drawn to her too.

As Michael battles his forbidden desire for the beautiful young newcomer, one of Hell’s most notorious Demon Knights arrives. Handsome and charismatic, Dante has come to claim the reincarnated soul of his lost lover trapped in Sophia. Cursed with the demon of Persuasion living inside him, Dante will use his seductive charms to lure Sophia into a dangerous game that ends with the kiss of death—unless Michael, who has captured Sophia’s heart, can now capture her soul.

My Opinion

I received an eARC through the publishers and NetGalley, this in no way influenced my review.

Sophia’s world has literally been flipped upside down. Her momma is dead, her daddy is with-drawn and she is suffering from a bad break-up. On top it off, her daddy moves her across the country from the west coast to the east coast. Sophia quickly makes new friends and adapts rather well to the new environment.

Enter sweet normal yet something is off Michael. He tries to stay away from her, he really does but circumstances do not allow it. Michael is keeping secrets, and pushes Sophia way until well Dante shows up. Then he demands that she stays away from both of them. Dante is a demon more specifically he is the Demon of Persuasion and he is after a soul. He will use everything and everyone to get it. Is Michael strong enough to resist Sophia and still save her? I know that I am supposed to be all about Michael but to be honest Dante was more interesting. No, I am not usually a bad guy advocate. Dante just seemed more relatable to me. He wanted his soul mate back and it was not his fault that she got reincarnated into Sophia.

Sophia at times would talk like a real teenager and then it will flip to her using words out of an SAT study guide. Words like confabulation, reciprocate, plumage, inconsequential, confection, apparition, acquiesce, presumptive, sanctimonious, salacious the list goes on and on. While yes there are teens that speak more proper than others, having worked with them for a decade I have yet to see a vocabulary to this extent.

The book was a fast read, and entertaining. Once I was done with it I did check to see when the sequel was coming out.

My Rating 3 out of 4 stars

  1. This looks good. I've been in the mood for more paranormal. Adding it to the TBR pile.
