Being a Sentinel isn’t all fairytales and secret gardens.

Sure, jumping through books into the world’s most beautiful libraries to protect humans from mystical creatures is awesome. No one knows that better than Gia Kearns, but she could do without the part where people are always trying to kill her. Oh, and the fact that Pop and her had to move away from her friends and life as she knew it.

And if that isn’t enough, her boyfriend, Arik, is acting strangely. Like, maybe she should be calling him “ex,” since he’s so into another girl. But she doesn’t have time to be mad or even jealous, because someone has to save the world from the upcoming apocalypse, and it looks like that’s going to be Gia.

Maybe. If she survives.

My Opinion

Guardians of Secrets starts off several weeks after Thief of Lies ends. Gia, her daddy and her channeling Diedre have moved away from New York City. They are in hiding. Nick’s family has moved as well. Both are having trouble with everything that happened in Thief of Lies. Gia has no clue how to act around Diedre, Nick is just having a bad time with everything- at least they have each other. As they learn the ropes of being a Sentinels, they are also on a secret mission to find the remaining Chiavis.

This puts Gia at odds with Arik as he things she is being reckless. These two start off strong, but then Arik pulls away. He acts completely opposite of the Arik we know and liked in Thief of Lies. So much so that I was wishing he would just go away. Bastien shows up in defense of Gia and Nick (yeah even in YA novels there is politics). It helps that he is willing to give Gia her space even though they are bethrothed. When Gia gets in over her head, he is the one to come to her rescue time and time again.

Gia grows in this book so much so that I forgot that it was the second book in the series. She becomes more- both physically and mentally. It was refreshing. Emotionally she goes through a lot, especially at the hands of Arik. Instead of wallowing in self-pity she puts on her big gal pants and deals. I no longer ship Arik and Gia together. You will understand why that ship sailed when you read this one. I am not totally sold on team Bastien yet either. More just team take some time and maybe give Bastien a chance.

I am worried about Nick, especially with what we have learned. Hid anger may just consume him. I hope he doesn’t go over to the dark side.

Guardians of Secrets is a fun continuation of a great series. The characters welcome you back with open arms and smiling faces- even the evil ones.

My Rating 4 out of 5 stars
