Teaser Tuesday (18) Broken Wings

Teaser Tuesdays is a weekly bookish meme, hosted by MizB of Should Be Reading. Anyone can play along! Just do the following:

• Grab your current read
• Open to a random page
• Share two (2) “teaser” sentences from somewhere on that page
• BE CAREFUL NOT TO INCLUDE SPOILERS! (make sure that what you share doesn’t give too much away! You don’t want to ruin the book for others!)

Teaser One

"Did you think I brought you back into my life for love?"

She looked her nose down on me.

“I told you I needed you. Delta is a five part company, formed by your great-great-grandparents. We have a lot of control in America … we have a lot of control in the world. But you need an heir to remain on the board and vote. I’m not giving up my vote.”

She smiled with saccharine sweetness. “Blood is thicker than water, daughter.”

Broken Wings Kindle Location 1209

How did Catherine give birth to two children? She has no maternal bone in her body. I really hope she dies.

Teaser Two

“Stop threatening me,” I whispered, our gazes locked together so I could see the storminess in his gray depths. “I’ve already lost everything, death is not my worst fear.”

Broken Wings Kindle Location 1235

Riley really does sound broken here. Maybe this is where half of the title comes from. How will Beck decide to respond to this? Will he understand what she means? Or keep being a jerk?

Teaser Three

“If you don’t want me to test my new skills on you, you better back up on the Dante thing. He’s my best friend. I won’t give him up. You’re just going to have to learn to play nice with him.”

Broken Wings Kindle Location 3285

Thank goodness Riley finally stands up to Beck- granted it is for Dante. Who I still think is shady but he is her bestie and a girl has to do what a girl has to do.

End of the Semester

The end of the school year comes with a lot of highs and a lot of lows.  This is even more so when you are a teacher of seniors. By the end of the school year, I mean the last four weeks.  This is the busiest and most stressful time for teachers and students a like.

High- Senior Class trip
Low- time with your family,blog,reading

High-Finally done with worrying about high stakes testing
Low- time with your family, blog, reading, until your students take the test

High- Seeing the children you watched over for the last four years become young adults, entering into a new stage in life
Low- again time with your family, blog, reading

So if I miss a day or three of blogging know that I am busy beings the best role model I can be: helping with scholarship application, and life decisions.

Hopefully, I will balance better than this past week.

Waiting on Wednesday (17) American Witch

Hey y'all, thanks so much for stopping by my WoW!

Waiting On Wednesday is a weekly meme, hosted by Jill at Breaking the Spine which spotlights upcoming releases that I'm eagerly anticipating.

From New York Times and USA Today bestselling author Thea Harrison comes the first in a new spellbinding trilogy…

Power can change a person…

For months Molly Sullivan endures the inexplicable: electrical surges, car breakdowns, visions. She even wonders if she might be the cause… and wonders if she might be crazy. Then she discovers her husband has cheated on her. Again. Now Molly realizes she is a newly awakening witch and a woman pushed over the edge.

Revenge can shape a person…

Josiah Mason is a Powerful witch and the leader of a secret coven with a shared goal: to destroy an ancient enemy who has ruined many lives. Josiah lost years to this man, and his sole focus is revenge. He’s prepared for every contingency—except encountering a beautiful new witch who understands nothing of the immense Power building within her or the attraction she wields over him.

Danger can bring them together…

When divorcing her husband, Molly uncovers a dangerous secret he’s willing to kill to protect. She turns to Josiah for help, and they discover a connection between Molly’s husband and Josiah’s enemy.

As they work together, a spark ignites between them that threatens to become an inferno. But Molly is done compromising herself for any man, and Josiah’s mission is his top priority. And the enemy is cunning, cruel, and drawing ever closer.

As the danger escalates, so does the tension between them. Is a lasting relationship possible? Will either of them live long enough to try?

Why am I waiting?

I really liked The Elder Races series from this author, so I signed up for her newsletter and got a sneak peek at this one. The first chapter wow! I have to know what happens to Molly and her cheating no good hubby.

Teaser Tuesday (17) Throne of Glass

Teaser Tuesdays is a weekly bookish meme, hosted by MizB of Should Be Reading. Anyone can play along! Just do the following:

• Grab your current read
• Open to a random page
• Share two (2) “teaser” sentences from somewhere on that page
• BE CAREFUL NOT TO INCLUDE SPOILERS! (make sure that what you share doesn’t give too much away! You don’t want to ruin the book for others!)
• Share the title & author, too, so that other TT participants can add the book to their TBR Lists if they like your teasers.

Teaser One

“Guards are of no use in a library.”

Oh, how wrong he was! Libraries were full of ideas—perhaps the most dangerous and powerful of all weapons.

Throne of Glass page 57

This is why I love libraries! It is the most dangerous of places.

Teaser Two

"Are any of them sizing you up? No. Because you’re not real competition. Because you don’t stand between them and whatever freedom or wealth they’re looking for.”

“Exactly! It’s insulting!”

“And when they wake up on the morning of the final duel and find that you are their opponent, and that you have beaten them, the look on their faces will make all of the insults and lack of attention worthwhile.”

Throne of Glass page 91

Chaol plan is really smart, hopefully Celaena/Lillian can stick to it. It must horrible to be who she is and have to hide it among those arrogant champions.

Teaser Three

“You’re my dearest friend, Celaena. It hurt me—hurt me more than I realized it would—to have things become so cold between us. To see you look at me with such distrust in your eyes. And I don’t want to ever see you look at me like that again. So I wish to give to you what I have given to few before.”

Throne of Glass page 322

While I understand where the distrust comes from I am with Princess Nehemia. Celaena should trust her and accept whatever she gives her.

From the internationally bestselling authors of THE ILLUMINAE FILES comes an epic new science fiction adventure.

The year is 2380, and the graduating cadets of Aurora Academy are being assigned their first missions. Star pupil Tyler Jones is ready to recruit the squad of his dreams, but his own boneheaded heroism sees him stuck with the dregs nobody else in the Academy would touch…

A cocky diplomat with a black belt in sarcasm
A sociopath scientist with a fondness for shooting her bunkmates
A smart-ass techwiz with the galaxy’s biggest chip on his shoulder
An alien warrior with anger management issues
A tomboy pilot who’s totally not into him, in case you were wondering

And Ty’s squad isn’t even his biggest problem—that’d be Aurora Jie-Lin O’Malley, the girl he’s just rescued from interdimensional space. Trapped in cryo-sleep for two centuries, Auri is a girl out of time and out of her depth. But she could be the catalyst that starts a war millions of years in the making, and Tyler’s squad of losers, discipline-cases and misfits might just be the last hope for the entire galaxy.

They're not the heroes we deserve. They're just the ones we could find. Nobody panic.

A tiny, still functioning part of my brain knew how bad being that distracted by appearance was, but I was...I was stunned.

Stunned straight into stupidity.

Storm and Fury ARC Location 473

Trinity girl, I was stunned straight into stupid just reading how the description of Zayne.

Teaser Two

I didn't know what that felt like.  To be loved like that or to love like that, in a passionate way that made you want to do ridiculous things like pledge your life to another.  I would never know what it felt like, either, if I stay here.

Storm and Fury ARC Location 769

Oh Trinity~ You are breaking my heart.  Maybe just maybe you will know what it is like.

Teaser Three

Zayne let me get about a step away about then he caught my hand and pulled me back.  My breath caught.  before I could guess what he was doing, he lowered his head and whispered, "Be safe."  Then I felt his lips on my temple, and my eyes briefly squeezed shut.

Storm and Fury ARC Location 4235

What just happened?  He kissed her!  In front of them!  Trinity has no clue why this is important!  Dang Zayne!

Review: In a Badger Way (Honey Badger Chronicles #2)

Author Shelly Laurenston
Format e-ARC
Print Length 400 pages
Publisher Kensington
Published March 26, 2019

Petite, kind, brilliant, and young, Stevie is nothing like the usual women bodyguard Shen Li is interested in. Even more surprising, the youngest of the lethal, ball-busting, and beautiful MacKilligan sisters is terrified of bears. But she’s not terrified of pandas. She loves pandas.

Which means that whether Shen wants her to or not, she simply won’t stop cuddling him. He isn’t some stuffed Giant Panda, ya know! He is a Giant Panda shifter. He deserves respect and personal space. Something that little hybrid is completely ignoring.

But Stevie has a way of finding trouble. Like going undercover to take down a scientist experimenting on other shifters. For what, Shen doesn’t want to know, but they’d better find out. And fast. Stevie might be the least violent of the honey badger sisters, but she’s the most dangerous to Shen’s peace of mind. Because she has absolutely no idea how much trouble they’re in . . . or just how damn adorable she is.

My Opinion

This is not a stand alone book- I recommend that you at least reading the first one in the series, Hot and Badgered. Although I would good as far as saying you should probably read the entire Pride series first so that you know who all the “other characters” are as well.

Sometimes when shifter’s mix, the hybrid that is formed is unique to say the least. Stevie is one such hybrid (tiger and honey badger), who has an IQ that is pretty much off the charts. A double prodigy: music- she walks away from this one thanks to daddy dearest and science. As a scientist she has dated other scientist. When the Group suspects one of them of experimenting on the hybrids they ask Stevie behind her sister’s back to see if her ex is up to no good. Complications are sure to arise as Stevie has extreme anxiety and issues controlling herself when she shifts. Enter her bodyguard Shen, on lone from Kyle due to Stevie’s family issues.

Shen is a panda shifter who would like nothing better than to eat bamboo while laying in the sun. His laidback attitude is the perfect mix for Stevie’s anxiety riddled one. Nothing seems to faze him, not even Stevie’s shifter form. Panda shifters are known for being calm, cool and collective- cuddly even. He takes her to therapy, and goes along with her sisters when he needs to. Even calms her when bears some around- she is terrified of them even though she is like a ton bigger than them when shifted. Doesn’t really help that she lives in a bear neighbor.

Favorite scenes have Irene in them- she really is the funniest logical human in this world. The fact that she shows up in this series after being in Pride just goes to show how much influence humans have in the shifter world. I think I love her the most out of all the Pride characters.

In a Badger Way is hilariously over the top, shifting craziness with the MacKilligan sisters front and center. I laughed so loudly reading this one.  Their sisterly love is shining brightly in this one which makes it just that much better. I cannot wait for Max’s story. I know that a lot of people are shipping her with Dutch but honestly I hope she ends up with Cooper.

My Rating 5 out of 5 stars

Favorite Quote “My DNA eats other DNA for lunch. SO I am great! Emotionally and genetically.”

Other People

Waiting on Wednesday (15) Supernatural Academy: Year One

Hey y'all, thanks so much for stopping by my WoW!

Waiting On Wednesday is a weekly meme, hosted by Jill at Breaking the Spine which spotlights upcoming releases that I'm eagerly anticipating.

Maddison James is about to discover some truths about the world.

Firstly … supernaturals exist.
WTF?

Secondly … she is one, even though no one seems to know exactly what kind.
Double WTF.

Thirdly … she’s about to go back to school.
Well, things just got a little more interesting.

The Supernatural Academy is where shifters, vampires, magic users, and fey are educated. Where they are taught about their abilities, and how to function in the human world. Maddison already has the human part down, but this supernatural thing is an entirely new dangerous game.

Example one: mean girls who can actually turn you into a frog.

Example two: Asher Lock, a god at the Academy. Not literally … well, who knows for sure. He certainly acts the part, as do all of his minions who worship him.

Asher drives her crazy, because apparently snarly, gorgeous, and arrogant is her thing, and despite their mutual dislike, sparks fly between them. The more they’re thrown together, the more Asher is determined to figure out what’s been blocking her abilities.

Until the moment the truth is revealed, and they find out nothing in this supernatural world is what they thought.

Why am I waiting?

A spin-off of one of my favorite series of all time, Supernatural Prison.  Hello!  I am so there!  I am stupid excited about this one.  I am hoping for cameos of my favorite Compass brothers but if they don't make it I will be okay because this is also one of my favorite worlds to be in.

"That's ridiculous."

"Is it?  Because that's basically what you're trying to do to yourself.  What you are, what you can become, is just as important a part of you as that brain you're so arrogant about.  IF someone said they wanted to 'fix that' would you want me to stop them?

In A Badger Way Kindle Location 1386

Shen has a point.  Hopefully Stevie will see it.

Teaser Two

"You feel okay?"

"Waiting for me to die?" she asked.

"What? No! Of course not."

"I pretended to die at lunch."

"Did you scare poor Shen?"

"You know I hate when people watch me take my meds.  It's too much pressure."

Charlie shook her head.  "That poor guy.  You're not going to be an easy girlfriend."

"But I've kind of made up my mind."

In A Badger Way Kindle Location 1496

I absolutely love the way these sisters are with each other.  It's refreshing how much love they have for one another.  Hilarious how annoying they are to each other too.

Teaser Three

Her head turned; her mouth dropped open in shock.   "You would say that to me?" I'm your girlfriend!"

"You're not my girlfriend!"

Stevie let out a disgusted sound.  "Keep up that attitude, mister, and I won't be."

Poor Shen doesn't stand a chance against against Stevie's charm.

Review: Louis

Author Jaymin Eve
Format e-book
Print Length 240 pages
Publisher self
Published March 8, 2018

Trapped in the demon world, Louis, one of the most powerful sorcerers in existence, will find himself struggling with the darkness that has seeped into his soul.

His family is determined to save him, but they have no idea what the demons have unleashed. And when a sorcerer of his strength loses control, there's a chance that no one will survive the fallout.

This is book 6 in the Supernatural Prison series. Recommended 17+ due to language and sexual situations.

My Opinion

***Review may contain spoilers from previous books in the Supernatural Prison series. Consider yourself warned.***

We are first introduced to Louis in Dragon Marked, the first book in the Supernatural series. He is the sorcerer who comes to save the Compass brothers when they are being set up for killing a fae. He happens to be one of the most powerful and revered wizard of their time. Unknown to them at the time he has a connection to Jessa and Misha (has since birth) He often does not reveal what he knows and he has a dry sense of humor that gets me right in the heart. Time and time again, he shows up to help Jessa and the brothers fight the big baddies. The last time though, in an effort to save children- gets pulled into the demon world. There he is tortured, and loses some of his light. The dark side is what comes back once his family saves him.

Louis has already been through a lot, even the death of a chosen mate. So when he comes back it is no surprise that he is darker. A darker Louis is an arrogant Louis, who is so confident in his powers and abilities that he starts something that the world is not ready for. So much so that it will take an unexpected mated bond with his true mate to make him come to his senses.

Tess, the witch that loved Louis as a child, a teen and young adult. Who as his best friend growing up matched him spell for spell was called in to help care for him while his spirit was not in his body. She is who goes with the rest of them to retrieve him. She is who still matches him in every way. She is also who had her heart broken by him many decades ago. So much so that she has lived far away from the supernatural world, among the humans as she could get.

Not really sure how I am liking the new and not improved Louis. I loved him as the almost suitor, enjoyed him as the mentor, and loved him as the brother figure he developed into. This one, well needs to be smacked around a bit in my opinion. Tee does give back to him as good as she gets, which I enjoyed.

There really was no big baddie in this one, unless you include Louis himself as one. More of a true mate bond that they both try to run from. So it is hard to judge this one against the others, as each of them were facing a world ending situation. Did it bring all the feels? Yes. Did I want more than what it brought? Yes. Am I hoping to see these two later on? Yes. This is a good addition to the series and hopefully the darker Louis will help with Jacob’s story.

My Rating 4 out of 5 stars

Favorite Quote “There was a very fine line between love and hate.”

Other People

Jessa- Louis’ friend
Compass Brothers- the Quads
Conner- bear shifter, Tee’s pack
James- bear shifter, Tee’s pack

Totally Should’ve Tag

Jessica at a Great read did this book tag in earlier in March and I wanted to do it but didn't get around to it. I finally did and I am really excited. She found it on JennReneeRead who got it from The Bibliophile Girl!

TOTALLY SHOULD'VE...GOTTEN A SEQUEL FINALE

Hungry for the Alpha had the perfect set up for a sequel for both of the sisters. Yet four years later I am still waiting.

The Gone with the Respiration series was slated to be a trilogy. Unfortunately, the series ends on a cliffhanger with book two and the third book is non-existence.

TOTALLY SHOULD'VE...HAD A SPIN-OFF SERIES

I liked this series and the friends of the main characters. They deserve to have their stories told.

AN AUTHOR WHO SHOULD...TOTALLY WRITE MORE BOOKS

Kate Serine One of my favorite authors, hasn't published anything in two years. She probably is still writing but the publishing world is fickled and what they love one month may not be what they want the next. I loved both of her romantic suspense series and wish that the publishers would pick them back up. I am hoping though that we see her name back out on the new releases list soon.

Tara A. Fuller I loved the Kissed by Death series that this author released and then well I don't know what happened to her.

A CHARACTER WHO TOTALLY SHOULD'VE...ENDED UP WITH SOMEONE ELSE

Poppy ends up with the right guy in the first book but then I had to go and read the third one where I cried ugly tears. As of right now, she is by herself but if someone else comes in to sweep her off her feet again, I may through my book.

TOTALLY SHOULD'VE...ENDED DIFFERENTLY

I am not over the ending, I will never be over the ending. I can't even, just no.

TOTALLY SHOULD'VE...HAD A MOVIE FRANCHISE

I think this one was actually optioned for tv but never made it due to a writers strike or something. Releasing it on the big screen in October would make for great fun.

TOTALLY SHOULD'VE...HAD A TV SERIES

This series is just yeah...I would have loved to have seen it weekly played out on my television. Witches, shifters, vampires and the sisters- who are cursed who wouldn't want to see them on tv.

TOTALLY SHOULD'VE...HAD ONE POINT OF VIEW

The fact that it was in third person was also a bit much.

TOTALLY SHOULD'VE...HAD A COVER CHANGE

I get why this is the cover, it does match the other ones on in series, I just don't like it.

TOTALLY SHOULD'VE...KEPT THE ORIGINAL COVERS

The original cover was the one of the left. I loved it, it gave me a sense of mystery, paranormal with a little bit of romance. The new one with the doll like face is kinda scary to me and I don't do scary.

The original cover was the one of the left. Why oh why did they change the cover? The original is so captivating.

TOTALLY SHOULD'VE...STOPPED AT ONE BOOK

I am so going to get backlash for this but lets be real, sometime a book or series rubs you the wrong way. Moon Called was an okay book for me, and everyone was talking about this series. After book four I was done, I gave it the old college try. Just not my cup of tea.

Waiting on Wednesday (14) The City of Veils

Hey y'all, thanks so much for stopping by my WoW!

Waiting On Wednesday is a weekly meme, hosted by Jill at Breaking the Spine which spotlights upcoming releases that we're eagerly anticipating.

For the past three years, Brynna has been patrolling the streets of Forcadel as a masked vigilante, protecting the innocent and beating up bad guys. Her current target is Lord Beswick, a slumlord businessman who keeps the townsfolk in a vicious poverty cycle. But one fateful evening, she's captured by Felix, the captain of the king's guard, and told a shocking truth: her father and brother are dead, and she needs to hang up her mask and become queen.

Before long, she negotiates a deal with Felix: attend to her royal duties during the day and continue her vigilante mission to take out Lord Beswick at night---at least until her coronation. But the politics of Forcadel are as volatile as the streets, and Brynna isn't sure whom she can trust in the castle. With two royals dead in less than a month, she must use all her wits to make sure she isn't the third.

Why am I waiting?

A female vigilante? A royal at that?  The future queen?  This one sounds so good- and that cover!

Teaser Tuesday (14) Kinked

Teaser Tuesdays is a weekly bookish meme, hosted by MizB of Should Be Reading. Anyone can play along! Just do the following:

• Grab your current read
• Open to a random page
• Share two (2) “teaser” sentences from somewhere on that page
• BE CAREFUL NOT TO INCLUDE SPOILERS! (make sure that what you share doesn’t give too much away! You don’t want to ruin the book for others!)
• Share the title & author, too, so that other TT participants can add the book to their TBR Lists if they like your teasers.

Teaser One

"I'll give this to you. You've been meticulous, you really have. You've covered your tracks well. But nobody in this world is perfect. That means that you have f**ked up somehow, somewhere. That's what I know. I have all the time in the world to find it, all the time, and do you know what that means? That means I’ve already got you. It just hasn’t happened yet.”
Kinked page 11

Poor Quentin , Aryal is being ruthless- which is saying something since she is a harpy.

Teaser Two

“Your wildness is actually one of the reasons why so many people love you in spite of the headaches you cause. Why Dragos loves you, even though I know he’s never said it. Some Wyr are more tame than others, but we all recognize something of our own wildness in you. Did you know that too?”

Kinked page 28

Grim giving Aryal a come to Jesus speech is priceless. The fact that he has her back makes him pretty darn amazing.

Teaser Three

No words, except: “I think you might be both my suicide and my salvation.” And he needed her for both. “I love you like a heart attack, woman.”

Kinked page 259

I think Quentin just admitted to loving her for reals and not as a joke. Hopefully he did, cause otherwise I am going to need one of the guys to go all out and beat him up. Aryal deserves love after all this time.

Review: Tomboy

Author Avery Flynn
Format e-book
Print Length 316 pages
Publisher Entangled: Amara
Published February 18, 2019

How exactly has one good deed landed me in the penalty box?

Ice Knights defenseman Zach Blackburn has come down with the flu, and my BFF—his PR manager—begs me to put my nursing degree to use and get him back to health. Of course she would call in a favor for the most hated man in Harbor City.

But when he’s finally on the mend and I’m sneaking out of his place, everything goes sideways. Paparazzi spot me and pictures, plus accusations that I slept with him, fly faster than a hockey puck.

At first, all of Harbor City wants my blood—or to give me a girlie-girl makeover. But then…the team finally wins a game. And now this fickle town wants me with the big jerk twenty-four seven.

Argh. I never slept with him the first time! But no one will listen. Then the grumpy bastard goes and promises to break his no-fan-appearances rule to help raise money for a free health clinic—but only if I’m rink-side at every game. That’s not a deal I can turn down.

But when the team keeps winning, and I realize there’s more to him than his bad reputation, suddenly remembering to keep my real hands off my fake date gets harder and harder to do.

My Opinion

The third book in The Hartigans series, and it so far has been my favorite. We were introduced to the two main characters in Butterface, the first book in the series- Fallon in person, Zack second hand. Then in Muffin Top they have more page time. The preview of this book was at the end of Muffin Top and dang did I want to get my hands on it right away. Thankfully, I didn’t have to wait too long.

Fallon is the sister to the guys in other two books. She comes from a larger Irish American family, one where the siblings and parents very much love and annoy each other. Fallon is an ER nurse which makes her great in a medical crisis-like the one that Zack ends up having. She however is not use to the limelight so being pushed into it was well difficult for her. She calls a spade a spade and lives her life for her. Although, her family does intervene every now and then.

As a professional hockey player, Zack knows that he will be in the limelight- the cameras are everywhere. Something happened in the past year that made him turn into a grade-A jerk to his fans, his teammates pretty much everyone but his public relations rep-Lucy. Which is why she goes to battle for him so much. Sports guys are superstitious and when Fallon shows up at a game and Zack shows up ready to play, the entire town thinks she is his Lady Luck.

His playing though has suffered and he needs to get his A game back before he is out of a job. Zack has trust issues that were well earned. I still don’t know how he overcame them in the end because sister I am not sure that I could have.

Fallon is hilarious, and her interactions with Zack are perfect for a sitcom. Their banter, their chemistry all of it would translate on the big screen perfectly. Their transition from hate to love was fabulous to witness.

Contemporary really isn’t my scene but I do enjoy reading it every now and then. This is one author that I continue to come back to. Tomboy is my favorite book in the series. This is because everything that I disliked in the first two books, was absent in this one. The inner dialog of the female character was not to the detriment of the story. Yes, you can read it stand alone, but why would you? The Hartigans family finding love is funny, light-heart while tackling some heavy handed issues.

My Rating 4 out of 5 stars

Favorite Quote Love may be patient, and love may be kind, but it’s also an inconvenient pain in the ass sometimes.
