Daemon kissed like he was a man starving for water, taking long, breathless drafts.  His teeth caught my lower lip when he pulled away, only to come back for more.

Being connected to Daemon Black sucks…

Thanks to his alien mojo, Daemon’s determined to prove what he feels for me is more than a product of our bizarro connection. So I’ve sworn him off, even though he’s running more hot than cold these days. But we’ve got bigger problems.

Something worse than the Arum has come to town…

The Department of Defense are here. If they ever find out what Daemon can do and that we're linked, I’m a goner. So is he. And there's this new boy in school who’s got a secret of his own. He knows what’s happened to me and he can help, but to do so, I have to lie to Daemon and stay away from him. Like that's possible. Against all common sense, I'm falling for Daemon. Hard.

But then everything changes…

I’ve seen someone who shouldn’t be alive. And I have to tell Daemon, even though I know he’s never going to stop searching until he gets the truth. What happened to his brother? Who betrayed him? And what does the DOD want from them—from me?

No one is who they seem. And not everyone will survive the lies…

My Thoughts

Onyx starts off almost right where Obsidan left off.  Daemon walks into the classroom, sits down and proceeds to annoy the ever -iving snot out of Katy. Katy, of course is trying hard to resist his annoyingly charming personality.  Which is a little refreshing~ in and of itself.  Usually once the alien in shining armor saves the damsel in distress, it is game over.  Instantly it is love at first sight, almost like Stockholm syndrome.  Katy is a fighter though, and she honestly wants what her parents had.
Daemon is different in this book.  Yeah, there is still the whole protectiveness thing.  His temper is still a little on the hot side.  He just seems a little less intense when it comes to Katy being a human.  After Shadows, anyone can understand why her planet of origin would be a touchy subject with him.
Blake is introduced in this book at the next “new kid”.  Instantly, I hated him and hoped with all my heart that this was not going to turn into a love triangle.  I think I hated him more for what he did to Dee and Katy’s friendship.  Katy’s time with him seemed to put more of a wedge into their friendship than Daemon’s courtship.
Both Katy and Daemon make mistakes in this novel.  Although, Katy’s mistakes will have you serious shaking your head thinking “are you on crack?”  While Daemon’s mistakes will have you smiling and thinking “how are you going to get out of this one lover boy?”  Some of their mistakes will turn out okay- others deadly.
Regardless though, Daemon’s faith in them being together is what to me was more amazing than anything else.  The alien who wanted nothing to do with humans.  The same Daemon who blamed humans for his brother’s death.  Daemon arrogant, annoyingly hot Daemon honestly believes that Katy and him will make it through it all.  Ultimately, it will be his faith in them, and their connection to each other that will have me cheering for him.
Mesmerizing you with charismatic characters and a sense of danger, Onyx is fantastic read. That will leave you begging for more and cringing that the next book in the series will not be released for a few more months. You find out more about the connection between Daemon and Katy, more about the relationship of Adam and Dee, more about the motives of the DOD.

My Rating 5 out of 5 stars

Other Characters

Dee- Daemon’s sister, Katy’s best friend
Ashley- Daemon’s ex-girlfriend, she is not too happy with the ex-part. She is an alien.
Adam- Dee’s boyfriend, and the only alien that is cool with Katy and Daemon besides Dee.
Blake- New boy in town, he likes Katy.  But there is something about him.  It could be that I am team Daemon.

Shadows

Author: JL Armentrout
Format: ebook
Print Length: 180 pages
Publisher: Entangled Teen
Published: Feb. 20, 2012

The last thing Dawson Black expected was Bethany Williams. As a Luxen, an alien life form on Earth, human girls are…well, fun. But since the Luxen have to keep their true identities a secret, falling for one would be insane. Dangerous. Tempting. Undeniable.

Bethany can’t deny the immediate connection between her and Dawson. And even though boys aren’t a complication she wants, she can’t stay away from him. Still, whenever they lock eyes, she’s drawn in. Captivated. Lured. Loved.

Dawson is keeping a secret that will change her existence…and put her life in jeopardy. But even he can’t stop risking everything for one human girl. Or from a fate that is as unavoidable as love itself.

My Thoughts

I will be honest; I was not thrilled when Shadows was released.  I even waited a few weeks before getting my own copy and hankering down to read it.  Maybe it was that it had no Katy in it.  Or is could have been that Daemon was not the main male character.  Although kudos to Jennifer for putting some of the scenes in Daemon’s point of view.  But for some reason, I was reluctant.  It could be that I already knew the sad ending and did not want to cry.  So I put it off until my TBR pile had dwindled into nothingness.  On a quite, yet rainy night I climbed into my reading chair and opened Shadows up.
Bethany takes Dawson by surprise on the day that she arrives at school.  He had just finished a fight with the Arum and was already completing changing a few things in his life.  Bethany’s family had moved to West Virginia to help take care of her distant yet very sick uncle.   Now I am not a fan of love at first sight stories.  Heck, even Katy makes fun of books that have this in them.  But for some reason it is almost believable in this novella.  Maybe it is due to already being introduced to their sad story in Obsidian.
Dawson and Bethany fall in love rather quickly.  Their love is put to the test before it even blooms though- by other aliens.  Not the Arum though, but instead by Dawson’s very own friends.  While Dawson is different from Daemon in many ways, he is still very protective of those he loves- namely Bethany and Dee.  When Andrew and Ashley try to get to Bethany, Dawson’s fierceness comes into play.  Man, I did not think that he had it in him.
If you had read Obsidian, you know how Dawson and Bethany’s love story ends.  What you did not know though was Dee and Daemon’s reaction to the news.  It is here that my emotional journey comes turbulent.  Both of their reactions are heartbreaking.  Daemon shouldering the blame, and vowing to protect his sister at all cost had me weeping my eyes out.
Shadows was a great way to appease the passionate fans of the Lux series.  Used as a buffer between Obsidian and Onyx, the wait between the two books somehow seemed less than that of other series.  More importantly though it allowed those fans insight into the motivation behind the aliens’ desires to avoid relationships with humans.

My Ratings 4 out of 5 stars

Other Characters

Daemon- Dawson’s older brother, by four minutes.  Very protective, extremely hot-headed.
Dee- Dawson’s younger sister, by a few minutes.  Very outgoing and accepting, just wants her brothers happy.
Andrew- Another Lux who hates that Dawson is into with Bethany.
Ashley- Andrew’s sister, who is well spiteful and mean to Bethany.

Obsidian

Author: JL Armentrout
Format: ebook
Print Length: 400 pages
Publisher: Entangled Teen
Published: May 8, 2012

When seventeen-year-old Katy Swartz moved to West Virginia right before her senior year, she’d pretty much resigned herself to thick accents, dodgy internet access, and a whole lot of boring, but then she spotted her hot neighbor, with his looming height and eerie green eyes.
Things were looking up…until he opened his mouth.
Daemon Black is infuriating. Arrogant. Stab-worthy. It’s hate at first sight, but when a stranger attacks her and Daemon literally freezes time with a wave of his hand, well, something…unexpected happens.
The hot guy next door? Well, he’s an alien.
Turns out that Daemon and his sister have a galaxy of enemies wanting to steal their abilities and Katy is caught in the crosshairs. Daemon’s touch has lit her up like the Vegas Strip and the only way she’s getting out of this alive is by sticking close to him until her alien mojo fades. That is if she doesn’t kill him first.

My Thoughts

Anything that Jennifer writes is addictive and Obsidian is no exception.  I absolutely enjoyed this book.  It is one of those books that you can really get drawn into and never want to leave.
With the guilt of his brother’s death on his heart, he tries to warn Katy away from his sister, Dee.  Katy is not the type of gal that is going to back down from a fight, even if she is fighting a boy that is a card carrying member of the holy trinity of hotness club.  In the beginning, I am with Katy on the name calling- Daemon is a douchebag.  I really just did not understand the attraction, and boy is there a lot of it.  Then chapter by chapter it is becomes clearer.
Katy is the mecca of dangerous situations.  The amazing thing is that she does nothing to get into those situations.  Our shy book loving heroine needs a hero and out of the woods comes Daemon of all people, or aliens.  His protectiveness of Katy is captivating, especially since he keeps pushing her away.  Holy alien babies everywhere, I came to love the banter between these two and started wishing their relationship would take a turn for the frisky.
Unfortunately, while Daemon does save her from dangerous situations he puts her in the most dangerous of situations.  Each time he saves her he puts a tracer on her for his enemies to find. This not only puts him and her at risk, but also Dee.  Will he be enough to save them both?  Will Katy be able to keep their secret?
The ending, oh Sweet Baby Jesus, is fabulous!  Daemon making his ridiculous bet, and Katy pretty much telling him no way in heck.  I love that she does not cave and accept what he wants.  I love that he knows that it will not be easy to convince her, but most of all I love that Daemon “loves a challenge.”
**Some of the best parts of the book, are in the bonus scenes.  They are written in Daemon’s point of view.

My Rating 5 out of 5 stars

Other Characters

Dee- Daemon’s sister, Katy’s best friend
Ashley- Daemon’s ex-girlfriend, she is not too happy with the ex-part. She is an alien.
Andrew- Ashley’s brother, hates all humans.  Or at least that is how he acts.
Adam- Ashley’s other brother (they come in sets of threes), Dee’s almost boyfriend
Simon- a human who is acts interested in Katy.  Daemon does not like this.

Covent

Author: Melissa Darnell
Format: eARC via Netgalley
Print Length: 496 pages
Publisher: Harlequin Teen
Published: Sept. 25, 2012

Dangerous to be together. Painful to be apart.

Savannah Colbert knows she broke up with Tristan Coleman for the right reasons. Most of all, to keep from killing him with her new vampire abilities. But try telling her heart. Now, lost in a sea of hostile Clann faces, Sav tries to come to terms with what she's becoming and what that means for her future. And that someone is doing their best to bully her into making a terrible mistake.

Tristan can't believe Sav won't even talk to him. If being apart is her decision, fine. Just don't expect him to honor it. But even as he prepares to fight for the girl he loves, forces beyond their control take them both in directions neither could have foreseen or prepared for.

A reckoning is coming…and not everyone will survive.

My Thoughts

Crave was a book so superbly written that there was no way that I was going to avoid Covet.  Even with the book having not one but two writer’s curses placed upon it- sophomoric slump and book two of a trilogy.  Often book two of a series is the time-sucker book.  One where the main characters are buying their time until the big baddie in the next book shows up.  This causes the main characters to be whiny, boring and with no plot development many readers want to give up on the series.  Melissa avoids both curses with the gracefulness of a Prima Donna ballerina.
At the end of Crave, you know what Savannah promises to do.  While I understood the reasoning behind her promise, it still kinda made my heart hurt a little.  Then I remembered who she was with Tristan, the boy who would not go down without a fight.  Hope grew in my heart that these two would one day be together again.
Covent starts off, exactly where Crave left off- they are on a plane returning to the states after facing the Vampire Council.  Savannah receives a phone call, her Granny is missing and her mother is frantic.  Savannah, Tristan and her daddy race to the Clann to intervene.  I must give props to Savannah, when that girl takes on a Council man does she do it with glamour and flare.  Unfortunately, Tristan could not prevent the series of steps that will lead to Savannah’s heartbreak and the demise of their relationship.
Savannah leaves him after a tragedy involving one of the most endearing characters that crossed the pages of Crave.   Fans everywhere will weep upon realizing what happened, tears of not just sorrow and disbelief but also happiness.  Due to the heartbreak and tragedy befalling our beloved characters before chapter three, one of the writer’s curses will be broken within the first fifty pages.  Readers can say bye, bye to the curse of the second book in a series.
Tristan tries repeatedly to reach out to Savannah but being afraid for his life she rebukes his attentions.  Some of the younger Clann see this as an opportunity and arrange for Tristan to have a mishap, Savannah and his sister ultimately save his life.  Tristan’s mom steps in and arranges for one of the other Charmers flirt with him.  This causes Savannah to think he has moved on.
Due to their lack of communication there is a lot of misunderstanding that occurs between the two of them.  Both sides end up hurting the other, more than they ever wanted to.  As a reader, behind the scenes there is something endearing about how Savannah and Tristan repeatedly try to save each other.  Yes, at times they are insensitive to each other, but goodness forbid someone or thing attempting to hurt the one they love.
Melissa avoids curse number two with the same sparkling flare of a firecracker on the 4th of July.  The characters’ internal development is astonishing as is their realization that they truly are loved by the other.  More so, though is the development of Savannah’s friends and enemies.  The readers are offered more insight into why some members of the Clann treat Savannah as a second rated citizen as well as how strong some friendships are.

The plot thickens as Clann members across America are showing up dead, with puncture wounds in their throat.  A vampire set-up, or the real deal is the question of the hour.  While there was some predictability into what has going to happen, it was still entertaining.
The last few chapters of the book pick up pace like there is no tomorrow, for some of the characters there will be no tomorrow. Darnell choreographed Covent to be the perfect bridging book between Crave and Consumed.
Covent met and then exceeded my expectations.  I have told anyone who will listen about the author of this book series- she is an amazing story-teller.  The story was engaging and entertaining without dragging on for pages on end.  The characters experiences were real and their development believable.  The end was holy heck, you just have to read it.  Needless to say Consumed cannot be released fast enough.

My Rating 4 out of 5 stars

Other Characters

Dylan- Clann member, former best friend to Tristan, strongest known enemy to Savannah.
Bethany- Charmer, who is dating Tristan, regardless of what he may think.
Ron- Anne’s former boyfriend, Savannah’s biology partner- Tristan thinks they are dating.
Anne- Savannah’s best friend, finds out Savannah’s secret but is keeping some of her own.
Gowin- Vampire on the Council sent to keep an eye of Savannah.

Demonocity

Author: Royce Buckingham
Format: eARC
Print Length: 177 pages
Publisher: Story Merchant Books
Published: Feb. 25, 2012
Seattle’s local Demonkeeper, Nathaniel Grimlock, is lost at sea. In his absence, the demons have taken over the city!

It’s up to his delinquent apprentice Richie and Nat’s two competing girlfriends to prevent Seattle’s destruction until he can find his way home to face the most powerful demon of them all.

Demonocity is the catastrophic conclusion to Royce Buckingham’s bestselling German series.

My Thoughts

Demonocity starts off right where Demoneater left off.  Nat had just left, to find the water demon that killed his parents. Lilli, Richie and Sandy have to go on without him.  While I understand why Nat left, I was still a little resentful of it.  Leaving a neophyte Demonkeeper, who is 13 years old, to take over the “family” business.  Family of course being one in which you make.
The demons what the Nat let free in Demoneater were causing chaos in Settle.  The trio had to try to help contain that chaos before the city was destroyed.  Although the only one of the group that seems to want to help is unfortunately the only one that cannot actually feel or see demons.  Poor Sandy keeps trying to get the other two on board with cleaning up the city.  Richie at times is a complete jerk to her, taking his cues from Lilli.  Lillie is as selfish as ever in the beginning of the book.  Although she does redeem herself towards the end, even admitting to herself that she is jealous of Sandy.
Nat’s journey, on the other hand, is no picnic either.  He does have two of his minions with him, Nikolai and Pernicious.  While they keep him company, they cannot protect him from the water demon.  Their meeting with the waterdemon is less than friendly, ending with them becoming shipwrecked.  They end up on the Great Pacific Garbage Patch- “a vortex of marine liter in the central North Pacific Ocean.”

Buckingham outdoes himself with this little gem.  This one and a half mile wide island is made up of litter that floats in the ocean.  It is hilarious that the plastic island is made up of environmental minded people.  Why you are thinking?  These people are so worried about the environment that they are willing to kill those in their way.  This part of the book reminded me of those people who are against drilling in the ocean for oil and they are on boats to protest.  Yet, the boat that they are on is leaking oil into the ocean.  Just kinda tickles my fancy I guess.

Back in Settle the trio are having a grand ole time of trying to contain the chaos.  Too bad that Sandy is still the only one who’s heart is into it.  Richie and Lilli kinda treat her a little bad for a little while.  I wanted to yell and shake Richie, all the while slipping Lilli during these moments of egos bubbling over.  Sandy takes it in stride though, concerned only with doing the right thing.

The conclusion of the trilogy was better than the middle story.  Which is typical of all trilogy.  Usually the second book tries to move the story into a direction that the readers were not expecting all the while having us cheer for the main leads.  The third book brings it all together nicely, except Demonocity does not wrap it all up.

My only criticism of the book is again the love tri-angle.  There is still no real closure with who Nat will pick.  The fact that while they are in danger Nat not knowing who to go to first is vastly annoying.  If you are not into a gal, don’t date her man.  If you are into her, than treat her right.  This makes me continue my thoughts on what a douche Nat is.

My Rating 3 out 5 stars

Other Characters

Richie- homeless teenager, Nat makes him his apprentice.
Sandy- Nat’s librarian girlfriend, he is her first boyfriend.  She happens to be his first girlfriend as well.
Mr. Neebor- the ornery old guy who lives next door.  Not so ornery in this one.
Lilli- a free-spirited hippie chick, who happens to be another Demonkeeper.
Carma- A gal that lives on the island of plastic- she kinda hates it.
Mayor- he needs help and is not afraid to ask for it.

Demoneater

Author: Royce Buckingham
Format: eARC
Print Length: 172 pages
Publisher: Story Merchant Books
Published: Feb. 25, 2012

Seattle’s demons are scared and wreaking havoc in the rainy city. They’ve burned their way through the Seattle underground, threatened to topple the Space Needle, and sent a twenty foot statue rampaging downtown.

It’s up to Nathaniel Grimlock, the teenage Demonkeeper, to control them, but when he discovers what’s stirring them up—a legendary monster known as the Demoneater—he finds that he’s in over his head yet again!

My Thoughts

“He is devouring them,” it said simply.  My mentor is a Demoneater.”  Read the journal in which a Demonkeeper was writing in.  He has just realized that his mentor, the one who trained him to be a Demonkeeper is no longer the man he knew.  This was bad, really bad.  You see a Keeper’s job was to give demons a safe place to live.
The book then fast-forwards to present day, where the Fremont troll has disappeared.  This would not normally warrant attention, except the troll was incased in two tons worth of concrete, wire and steel rebar.  Instead of being a statue in the park like the normal humans thought, the troll was really a sedentary entity who liked to make folks squirm.  While Nat, Sandy and Richie are out looking for the troll they run into to equally strange characters.  Mr. Calamitous, a weird researcher and Lilli a free-spirit from San Francisco.
The introduction of another female character- as we all know will lead to a love tri-angle.  The love tri-angle does little to help the book move along.  The execution of the love tri-angle is awkward at best.  In fact, it actually made me very mad at Nat- how dare he put Sandy though this.  As each other’s first romantic interest, one would have hoped that Lilli would have just been a friend to Nat and Sandy.  But no- Buckingham goes there.  Even worse, there is no true resolution of the tri-angle before the end of the book.
Demoneater is a refreshing take on the paranormal world that had exploded over the last few years.  I had a hard time cheering for Nat, the main character.  Yeah, he helps Richie out and gives him a place to live.  Richie by the way is hilarious.  Sandy is loyal and resourceful, a character that you want happiness for.  Lilli, is well weak, with a woe is me kinda attitude that annoyed me.  Why?  Her character sees the beauty in things, but it is not portrayed every well.
The entity that scares the Troll into hiding does not come out into the open until chapter 23.  I cannot help but wonder if the introduction of the bad guy earlier would have made the book read at a faster pace.
The cover of the book while eye-catching does not give anything away, neither does the synopsis. This is a shame because while some do judge a book by the cover, others judge it by the synopsis.  I did not feel that either did the book justice.  A trio of teenagers, surrounded by mischievous demons while a female teen looks on from the distance with a demon on her shoulder would be a better jacket for the book.
I am going to have to rate this book 2½ stars out of 5.  I was excited to read the book and remained excited about it until Chapter 10 titled Two Kisses.  While I do like love tri-angles, I feel that not all books need them.  This one clearly did not, as it crushed my enjoyment of the book greatly.

My Ratings 2½ stars out of 5

Other Characters

Richie- homeless teenager, Nat makes him his apprentice.
Sandy- Nat’s librarian girlfriend, he is her first boyfriend.  She happens to be his first girlfriend as well.
Mr. Neebor- the ornery old guy who lives, you guessed it next door.
Mr. Calamitous- weird researcher, keeps showing up.
Lilli- a free-spirited hippie chick, who happens to be another Demonkeeper.

“I won’t lose you like that, Ree.  I can’t lose you.”  His hands cupped her face as he started deep into his eyes.  There was vulnerability in his features Ree had never seen before.  She raised a hand to gently trace the contours of his cheekbones, letting herself get lost in the emerald depths of his gaze.  Slowly, as if he was unsure of her response, he leaned forward and gently touched his lips to her forehead before kissing her nose, eyelids, and cheeks.  Her heart beat rapidly in her chest as Paden finally brought his lips to hers.  Lightly, he kissed her, as if he thought she might break in his hands.

THE RISE OF NINE Book Trailer

Teaser Tuesday (6)

Teaser Tuesdays is a weekly bookish meme, hosted by MizB of Should Be Reading. Anyone can play along! Just do the following:
• Grab your current read
• Open to a random page
• Share two (2) “teaser” sentences from somewhere on that page
BE CAREFUL NOT TO INCLUDE SPOILERS! (make sure that what you share doesn’t give too much away! You don’t want to ruin the book for others!)
• Share the title & author, too, so that other TT participants can add the book to their TBR Lists if they like your teasers!
