Cover Love: Safe From Harm

GOODNESS! Have you seen this cover?  It is smoking hot!  It is yeah, me likely.  It helps that it is for a book from one of my go to all time favorite authors!  Everything she has written I have read.  Nothing below 4 stars, and when I am in a reading slump re-reading her books pulls me out faster than a hot knife through butter.

Waiting on Wednesday (28) PS. I Like You

Hey y'all, thanks so much for stopping by my WoW!

Waiting On Wednesday is a weekly meme, hosted by Jill at Breaking the Spine which spotlights upcoming releases that we're eagerly anticipating.

What if the person you were falling for was a total mystery?

While Lily is spacing out in Chemistry one day, she picks up her pencil and scribbles a line from one
of her favorite songs on the desk. The next day, someone else has written back to her on the desk! Soon enough Lily and the mystery student are exchanging notes, and lyrics, and even sharing secrets. When Lily finds out that her anonymous pen pal is a guy, she's flustered -- and kind of feels like she's falling for him. She and her best friend set out to unravel the identity of the letter writer -- but when the truth is revealed, the guy is the LAST person Lily could have ever imagined it to be. Now that Lily knows the truth, can she untangle her feelings and gather the courage to listen to her heart?

From beloved author Kasie West (The Distance Between Us) comes an utterly charming story about mixed messages, missed connections, and the magic of good old-fashioned secret admirer notes.

Why I am Waiting?

This one just looks cute and cuddly. One of those warm fuzzy books.

These days, a sense of excitement filled him as he woke each morning. And that was down to Gabby. She was fun, and he wanted her desperately; she made him feel alive. At the same time, he knew Gabrielle existed underneath, and she would be good for him, someone to live up to.

Vittorio is a normal guy, living an abnormal life for a year. He meets Gabrielle and she grounds him- until she runs. When he finds her she is Gabby. Can these two different images be the same person?

***Side note I really do know someone named Vittorio. Nothing like the Vittorio in this book but I thought it was cool.

When Nowhere Is Safe

Most people avoid the dreaded Whitechapel district. For Honoria Todd, it's the last safe haven. But at what price?

Blade is known as the master of the rookeries—no one dares cross him. It's been said he faced down the Echelon's army single-handedly, that ever since being infected by the blood-craving he's been quicker, stronger, and almost immortal.

When Honoria shows up at his door, his tenuous control comes close to snapping. She's so...innocent. He doesn't see her backbone of steel—or that she could be the very salvation he's been seeking.

My Opinion

When Honoria’s father dies, she is entrusted with the responsibility of caring for her sister, Lena and little brother, Charlie. She was attempting to avoid the Duke of Vickers when she moved them into the Whitechapel district. Yet, he wants her or what she has so badly he put a heavenly price on her head. No one in Whitechapel pays too much attention to the bluebloods though, so she felt relatively safe. That is until the Blade demands her presence in his home. Blade owns Whitechapel. His word is golden, his oath his bond. In the world she grew up in his name was akin to the boogeyman.

Honoria is a likeable character as her sense of family responsibility supersedes the need for self-preservation. This of course makes her endearing. She has a sense of honor and respectability that many are lacking who live in the Whitechapel district. She is proper and at times a bit snobby but she is aware of this character flaw and is trying to change. She takes her responsibilities serious, and she tough. Tougher than she even believes.

Blade is known as the “Devil of Whitechapel”. He is a blueblood- only he is one that his own kind hates. He doesn’t follow their rules. He is improper, rough and rustic. He pretty much rocks of total awesomeness. He has his own code of justice and morality that he lives by. He may have started off interested in Honoria for revenge but that changes swiftly.

Kiss of Steel was a book that was enjoyable to read. The world building was delightful. I am just not sure if I want to continue in the series. For me it was missing something, some flare to make me continue the series right now. Maybe later I will come back to it.

My Rating 3 out of 5 stars.

Subject Name: Madeline Faire
Race: Human
Sex: Female
Age: 22
Designation: Prisoner
Temperament: Curious

When natural disaster strikes Joyal, Madeline is tossed from her planet into the hands of the Kireg. Madeline has always feared the Kireg, an alien who can bend—or snap—a mind with only a thought. What she found on their home planet is even more frightening. Civil unrest has exploded and enemies are everywhere. But the one thing she never expected to find was her mate, the rebellion leader who started the war.

My Opinion

*Due to some content this book is recommended for the over 18 crowd.*

We met Madeline and Geo in Cold Mark, at different times. Their story starts when Braita’s started, we see the events that lead to Madeline ending up on Triaz, and how Geo went looking for her. As a scientist on Joyal, Madeline is going to question everything. It is in her nature, she accidently questions the rebel leader, Geo. Why would she questions him? He rescues the humans that are coming to his planet from the ruling Dynasty (they want to use them as slaves).

Geo is more likeable than Madeline- this is typically not the case. He has a sense of responsibility to his people. Yeah, he is the reason for the civil unrest in his nation yet his purpose is for the betterment of his people. The discovery of his mate, was a horrible event for both of them. He tries to be patient with her, allowing her space. He allows her to have choices that others on his planet do not. He protects her from his people, their thoughts and actions. Many are going to hate him, I found him endearing. He does not hold how they met, or their species against her.

Madeline on the other hand, is a little harder to like. I enjoyed that she questioned everything, she tried to protect her people. She does not react well when she discovers that Geo is her mate. I can’t blame her, as that discovery was made due to despicable circumstances. She runs, in the middle of a civil war. With her logical mind, running just seems out of character.

The book was interesting, although some scenes were horrific. I am not sure I would have been able to move past that first umm encounter. The world building again is pretty remarkable.

My Rating 3 out of 5 stars

Book Trailer Saturday (28) Fate's Forsaken Series

Some people believe you can fall in love at first sight. When it comes to books I believe those people. Book trailers are an excellent way to fall in love at first sight. I hope to feature a book trailer here every Saturday to help you fall in love at first sight..

Seventeen years ago, a long and bloody rebellion wracked the six united regions of the Kingdom. Now the

new King wields the vast and unvanquished army of Midlan with his right hand, and with his left has granted a small group of thugs — the nobles he calls his Sovereign Five — unbridled rule over the other regions. As if this weren’t bad enough, the King has also outlawed the practice of whispering — which is a problem for Kael.

It’s not like he asked to be born a whisperer: he didn’t ask for his strange healing powers anymore than he asked to be the village runt. And when he rescues a wounded girl from the perils of the Unforgivable Mountains, his luck only gets worse. She couldn’t have been just any girl: she had to be Kyleigh —the sword-wielding renegade knight with all of Midlan on her trail. Then one miserable, snowy evening, things go from bad to worse, and Kael is left with no choice but to follow Kyleigh down the mountains and into the tumultuous lowlands. She leads him on one mad quest after the next — eventually pulling off an act of such mischievous proportions that it threatens to change the Kingdom as they know it.

Review: Cold Marked

Author Scarlett Dawn
Format e-book
Print Length 429 pages

Subject Name: Braita Valorn
Race: Human
Sex: Female
Age: 18
Designation: Slave
Temperament: Hostile

Thrown head first into a barbaric world she knows nothing of, Braita Valorn must adapt to the dark life as a slave. Her survival hinges on it. With her freedom stolen, her existence is now controlled by the possessive Plumas of the West. But what they cannot control are her feelings and the other set of men who want her—and who are willing to use every trick they know to obtain her from their enemies. Only Braita never expected to fall for these two Pluma leaders of the East.

Braita is a fighter. She demands her freedom most of all. And this slave is willing to use her own tricks to get what she wants. Including her men...

My Opinion

*Due to some ideologies about relationships this book is recommended for the over 18 crowd.*

Briata was born on a planet similar to Earth but with less land called Joyal. She was placed on the Government track for her people. Those on this track typically grew to become the leaders some though are picked to go to one of the two nearby planets, once their own becomes unstable for the growing population. Briata and her bestie- Jax (a guy) are selected at random to go to Triaz, whose inhabitants are brutal.

Briata is a strong female from the get-go. She is trained physically as a fighter, she has linguistic capabilities. She is no weak link. Now is sweet, she cares about herself an about Jax. She is ignorant in the ways of intimacy. Intimacy includes any form of touch or real attachment, in fact her only attachment on Jovial is with her sparring partner, Jax. As they have been partners for their whole lives it makes sense that they have an attachment. When Jax is in danger, Briata will rise to the occasion. Even if it goes against orders, even if it catches the attention of the Plumas. Plumas are the rulers of Triaz.

The thing I like best about this book was the even though her bestie was a guy, he was not the love interest. Most books make it so, and sometimes it feels forced. Here Jax was just her best friend. They would do anything for each other. Jax is strong, yet supportive. He does not try to solve Briata’s problem. He just stands by her.

The Plumas are interesting. Both sets. It is just hard to talk about them without giving anything away. Just know that on Triaz, people are soul tied together in triads- two boys, one female. The female is known as the “Soul”. They are often cherished and a lot of laws govern how they are to be treated.

Cold Mark was an interesting book that keeps the reader engaged. I enjoyed the world building and the formation of friendships/relationships. If the concept of an unconventional relationship bothers you, this is probably not the book for you.

My Rating 3 out of 5 stars

Waiting on Wednesday (27) Imprudence

Hey y'all, thanks so much for stopping by my WoW!

Waiting On Wednesday is a weekly meme, hosted by Jill at Breaking the Spine which spotlights upcoming releases that we're eagerly anticipating.

London is in chaos.

Rue and the crew of The Spotted Custard returned from India with revelations that shook the foundations of the scientific community. There is mass political upheaval, the vampires are tetchy, and something is seriously wrong with the local werewolf pack. To top it all off, Rue’s best friend Primrose keeps getting engaged to the most inappropriate military types.

Rue has got personal problems as well. Her vampire father is angry, her werewolf father is crazy, and her obstreperous mother is both. Worst of all, Rue’s beginning to suspect what they all really are… is frightened.

When the Custard is ordered to Egypt, transporting some highly unusual passengers, Rue’s problems go from personal to impossible. Can she get Percy to stop sulking? Will she find the true cause of Primrose’s lovesickness? And what is Quesnel hiding in the boiler room?

Why I am Waiting?

Rue is just funny. Her parents’ reaction to her amuses me and Primrose is adorable. I am enjoying this series.

Jax bent, lowering his six-foot, well-built frame to whisper, "Which alien would you rather-"

"The Kireg," I mumbled, cutting him off. It was a no-brainer. "They may have psychic abilities, but at least they have some civility on Egyac."

Jax straightened, nodding his dark head of curly hair. "Same here."

My chin trembled the barest it. "I hope we aren't separated."

Review: The Wendigo Witchling

Author B. Kristin McMichael
Format e-book
Print Length 204 pages
Publisher Lexia Press
Published June 7, 2016

Cassie is part of it now. Turns out, she may not want to join the coven, but that’s exactly what she did when she bonded herself to Nate. Rather than face the ordeal of joining the clan, Cassie finds it’s time for a road trip with her best friend, Whitney. The road trip was to get away, maybe learn a bit more about night humans—it wasn’t to find a deep dark secret hidden in Whitney’s past, one that may hit a little closer to home than Cassie wants to admit. With their road trip cut short, it is time to confront everyone about the lies that had been their lives, but Cassie soon finds out home isn’t exactly how she left it.

Where have all the witches gone? She’s the only witch left in town when they return. Soon she is dragged into more than she bargained for and she has to make choices that will change everything. She’s finally given a choice: does she want to be a skinwalkers witch or a wendigo witch? Too bad there are more secrets than answers. Without all the facts, can she really choose her life’s direction? Time isn’t on her side as she has to make a choice. Now she just hopes it’s the right one.

My Opinion

***Spoilers for The Witchling Apprentice.

This one starts off a few days after The Witchling Apprentice finishes. Right away you know that the adjustment that Cassie is making hasn’t been easy- for her, or Nate. He actually likes having a mate, he likes having Cassie as his mate. She though is fighting it tooth and nail. When the opportunity comes for her to escape with Whitney to see a familiar face she jumps at it. Expecting Nate to be furious once she returns, she is taken aback when he tells her to stay gone. Cassie of course, does not listen and is soon taken captive by the Wendigo pack that has been living nearby. It is ran by a former member of the skinwalker pack that Cassie grew up around. Somethings are revealed that could be game changers.

Cassie is mated to Nate. She chose this, she did this to them in the last book. She already made her choice. She may not have liked the circumstances that led to that but it is what it is. I was more upset with her in this book than in the last. Nate’s only concern is protecting Cassie. Cassie’s only concern is being able to make decisions. Yet she made them- she took the test that put her in the coven. She mated with Nate. She just doesn’t like the consequences of her decisions. There were times I wanted to tell her to grow up. I couldn’t but man did I want to.

The Wendigo Witch flipped the switch with Jared. We were introduced to him in the first book, as part of the Wendigo pack. Apparently, there is a lot more to it than that. With Jared comes the love triangle. Normally, I am not opposed to love triangles like some readers. I am however opposed to this one. A mated bond is a mated bond. It is not supposed to allow another into it yet that is what happens here. From there I just got more annoyed with Cassie as I read on. Both of the guys genuinely care for Cassie. It was difficult to see them in a position where they may be the cause of pain for her.

The story was good, I still plan to read the rest of the series. I just couldn’t move past the newly designed love triangle enough to enjoy the book.

My Rating 3 out of 5 stars

Serafina's defeat of the Man in the Black Cloak has brought her out of the shadows and into the daylight realm of her home, Biltmore Estate. Every night she visits her mother in the forest, eager to learn the ways of

the catamount. But Serafina finds herself caught between her two worlds: she's too wild for Biltmore's beautifully dressed ladies and formal customs, and too human to fully join her kin.

Late one night, Serafina encounters a strange and terrifying figure in the forest, and is attacked by the vicious wolfhounds that seem to be under his control. Even worse, she's convinced that the stranger was not alone, that he has sent his accomplice into Biltmore in disguise.

Someone is wreaking havoc at the estate. A mysterious series of attacks test Serafina's role as Biltmore's protector, culminating in a tragedy that tears Serafina's best friend and only ally, Braeden Vanderbilt, from her side. Heartbroken, she flees.

Deep in the forest, Serafina comes face-to-face with the evil infecting Biltmore-and discovers its reach is far greater than she'd ever imagined. All the humans and creatures of the Blue Ridge Mountains are in terrible danger. For Serafina to defeat this new evil before it engulfs her beloved home, she must search deep inside herself and embrace the destiny that has always awaited her.
