Book Trailer Saturday (18) The Crown's Game

Some people believe you can fall in love at first sight. When it comes to books I believe those people. Book trailers are an excellent way to fall in love at first sight. I hope to feature a book trailer here every Saturday to help you fall in love at first sight..

Vika Andreyeva can summon the snow and turn ash into gold. Nikolai Karimov can see through walls and conjure bridges out of thin air. They are enchanters—the only two in Russia—and with the Ottoman Empire and the Kazakhs threatening, the Tsar needs a powerful enchanter by his side.

And so he initiates the Crown’s Game, an ancient duel of magical skill—the greatest test an enchanter
will ever know. The victor becomes the Imperial Enchanter and the Tsar’s most respected adviser. The defeated is sentenced to death.

Raised on tiny Ovchinin Island her whole life, Vika is eager for the chance to show off her talent in the grand capital of Saint Petersburg. But can she kill another enchanter—even when his magic calls to her like nothing else ever has?

For Nikolai, an orphan, the Crown’s Game is the chance of a lifetime. But his deadly opponent is a force to be reckoned with—beautiful, whip smart, imaginative—and he can’t stop thinking about her.

And when Pasha, Nikolai’s best friend and heir to the throne, also starts to fall for the mysterious enchantress, Nikolai must defeat the girl they both love... or be killed himself.

As long-buried secrets emerge, threatening the future of the empire, it becomes dangerously clear... the Crown’s Game is not one to lose.

Review: Alpha: Origins

Author Ilona Andres
Format e-book
Print Length 157 pages
Publisher InterMix
Published April 19, 2016

From Ilona Andrews—#1 New York Times bestselling author of Magic Shifts and
the Kate Daniels novels—comes a stark, seductive tale of a world torn asunder by supernatural gifts and irresistible passions...

Karina Tucker is driving a van of children home from a field trip when an unplanned detour to a seemingly ordinary rest stop changes her life. There, she witnesses a world beyond humanity’s sight, of frightful powers and chaos, where she is in death’s grip... before an irresistibly dangerous male saves her—only to take her captive.

For she is a rare commodity in the shadowy realm she’s entered.

Karina soon finds herself caught in a violent civil war where those with inhuman powers strive to destroy each other without mercy. And it becomes all too clear that she must make a choice: submit and become a pawn, or take hold of her own destiny and fight for survival against impossible odds.

Alphas: Origins originally appeared in Angels of Darkness.

My Opinion

Karina and her daughter become citizens of a strange society. One tasked with the protection of all humanity. Their citizenship based off of coercion. She was a chaperon of several children in her daughter’s class. One potty break and several demons later, she is poisoned and given an option become a donor or die. Well, there is not much of a choice there. A donor means that she will be a chew toy for Lucas. Her blood counteracts the venom in his. Lucas is human and then some. As she assimilates into this new culture, she must determine who to trust and who to stay away from.

Lucas is a guy that I can like. He was given a raw deal out of life. Yet, he will do what he must to protect humanity, to follow the Mandate. He is the most feared of his kind- the strongest, the deadliest. The folks around him treat him like the plague and yet he is what keeps them alive. He tries to take care of Karina the best he can, even protecting Emily. He knows he is dangerous, even tells Karina as much. Yet, he physically needs what her body offers (not sexual) to survive. He is attracted to her but tries to keep his distance.

Karina is a whole ball of what? She is a momma and so I get the whole momma bear coming out. She will do anything to protect her daughter. She seems strong and capable, yet I don’t know. There is something I don’t like about her- not sure what it is. I did like that she sees the humanity in Lucas and all that he has suffered to help keep everyone safe.

Alpha: Origins is a dark story. It is not for the weak of heart or those that want a romantic love. There is the potential for romance I just didn’t buy into it. I do wonder where it is going so I will probably read the next one in the series.

Waiting on Wednesday (17) The Hidden Oracle

Hey y'all, thanks so much for stopping by my WoW!

Waiting On Wednesday is a weekly meme, hosted by Jill at Breaking the Spine which spotlights upcoming releases that we're eagerly anticipating.

How do you punish an immortal?

By making him human.

After angering his father Zeus, the god Apollo is cast down from Olympus. Weak and disorientated, he lands in New York City as a regular teenage boy. Now, without his godly pow
ers, the four-thousand-year-old deity must learn to survive in the modern world until he can somehow find a way to regain Zeus's favour.

But Apollo has many enemies - gods, monsters and mortals who would love to see the former Olympian permanently destroyed. Apollo needs help, and he can think of only one place to go . . . an enclave of modern demigods known as Camp Half-Blood.

Why am I waiting?

Confession
time...I never read the Percy Jackson series. It at a time in my life where reading was not an everyday thing. I love books about demi-gods and gods though. So yeah this one looks good to me.

"They're afraid of you," she said.

"I'm the security specialist here; I have the right of judgement," he said. "I can kill anyone on base at any point without any retribution."

"You protect them, and all you get in return is fear. Why do you keep doing this?"

Lucas kept walking. "Because everyone must have a purpose. The Mandate tells me what I am doing is right and must be done and because I'm the biggest and the strongest it's my duty to put myself between my people and danger. I would do it for you."

Review: The Glittering Court

Author Richelle Mead
Format e-book
Print Length 416 pages
Publisher Razorbill
Published April 5, 2016

My Opinion

The Glittering Court was not what I expected, yet it was still enchanting.

Cedric comes to Countess of Rothford, Elizabeth’s home to take a lady’s maid, Adelaide to his father’s finishing school, The Glittering Court. There she will be taught the finer things in life with the exception of making a good marriage match in Adoria- a new frontier. Ade doesn’t go, Adelaide does or more specifically Lizzie pretending to be Adelaide.

At the Glittering Court there are many girls, Adelaide tries her best not to stand out. Then she discovers why Cedric needs the commission from her marriage. This prompts her to take all of the tests over again to score the highest scores for the awaiting gentlemen. Their plan was flawless except they didn’t count on falling in love.

Adelaide is a strong-willed opinionated young lady. Instead of embracing a planned future with a cold husband and a controlling mother in law she embraces the unknown. While the Glittering Court did not teach her anything she didn’t already know it did show the reader her character. She fights for the underdog, stands up for what she believes in and hates bullies. Her time in Adoria shows us that she follows her heart. Overall, she is a character the reader can cheer for.

Cedric, the main love interest is charming. He accepts Adelaide for who she is, helps her to escape who she was, and loves her for who she could be. He is a risk taker- one who’s is a helpless romantic. He is open-minded and defends Adelaide with all his might.

The Glittering Court is an entertaining love story. Not exactly what I was expecting yet still held my interest. I did end up more absorbed in Mira’s story than Adalaide’s. I am looking forward to the next two in the series.

Review: Air Awakens

Author
Elise Kova
Format e-book
Print Length 377 pages
Publisher Silver Wing Press
Published August 27, 2015

My Opinion

Vhalla is a library apprentice who’s research saved the life of the Crown Prince Aldrik. Prince Aldrik has a fire affinity and he recognizes magic in Vhalla’s notes. The Minister of Sorcery takes her from all that she knows to the Tower of Sorcerers and tells her who she is. Vhalla has a huge case of denial which is rooted in deep seated racism against the sorcerers. Prince Aldrik recognizes this and instead of giving up on her uses her own thirst for knowledge to open her eyes.

Vhalla grows throughout the book starting first as a closed minded meek individual towards the end she has adapted. She becomes a strong-willed young lady who will do anything for those that she loves. Always the first to use logic, she learns that sometimes emotions are enough. Prince Aldrik is not a nice prince. He is ruthless and hard. He is protective and reckless. Yeah, a walking oxymoron. He is extremely quick-tempered yet knows when he has to be remorseful. He agrees to mentor Vhalla and he pushes her, which is good. She thrives under his tutelage.

Vhalla is the only known sorcerer with a wind affinity. All others have been killed- she is a special unicorn. This makes her feared which is important because a feared Vhalla is an imprisoned Vhalla. Will Aldrik get there in time to save her? Can he?

The chemistry between these two is explosive. Only events prevented them from acting on it. So tight is the tension that I am guessing within the first half of the next book it will break. Which is not a good thing, with the ending the reader is left with.

Enjoyable first book in the series. The world building was captivating and the characters likeable. Leaves the reader with a strong desire to revisit the world at a later date.

My Rating 3 out of 5 stars

Review: The Witchling Apprentice

Author B. Kristin McMichael
Format e-book
Print Length 229 pages
Publisher Lexia Press, LLC
Published March 15, 2016

Witches, potions, and magical spells—that all made sense, but men turning into animal-like monsters in the middle of the night? That had to be fiction, right? Wrong. Cassandra Booth thought her world of witches would be complete when she joined her coven. Fate didn’t plan to let that be the case for her. Joining the coven brings new knowledge, like mates and men as animals, all things Cassie would rather not know. As her plans unravel she must find a way to join the coven without committing her life to a guy she once was friends with and now hates.

My Opinion

Cassie has grown-up an outsider in her hometown. Partly because no one knows who her daddy is. Partly because she was raised by her eccentric aunt and grumpy uncle. And finally because her powers scare the begeebees out of people. She believes that if she takes and passes the test to become a witchling apprentice early she will finally find her place. Instead she finds more questions and a mate that she doesn’t want. How to get rid of him and still take her place in the coven is her main concern. Instead she honestly should be worried about things that go bump in the night.

Cassie is an interesting gal. She accepts all the changes that come with being in a coven with an open mind. All but one- the mating parting. I honestly don’t get why she can accept night and day humans but not he paring of the two. I felt that she was protesting too much.

Nate is a good mate. He is kind and understanding of what Cassie is going thorough. Okay, so for the last 8 years he had to stay away from Cassie but that was due to his alpha. He is not only understanding, he protects her- from evil and from herself. Cassie makes some mistakes. Things happen and she gets kidnapped not once but twice by two different groups. Nate is there both times, to save the day. Cassie isn’t always the nicest to him. I get her resentment but like the song goes- let it go.

The Witchling Apprentice is an intriguing start to a spin-off series. You do not have to read the original story to understand what is going on in the tale. I didn’t and had no trouble following the plot. It does make you want to go back and read the original series if you go t the time. Here is hoping that some questions will be answered in the next book.

Waiting on Wednesday (16) Blood Lust

Hey y'all, thanks so much for stopping by my WoW!

Waiting On Wednesday is a weekly meme, hosted by Jill at Breaking the Spine which spotlights upcoming releases that we're eagerly anticipating.

Blessed and cursed by their hidden abilities, the Sentinels have no choice but to live, and love, on the edge of humanity…

The Sentinel assassin, Bas, is facing the greatest challenge of his outcast existence. His young daughter, Molly, has been kidnapped. But her disappearance has brought the return of her mother,
Myst, whom Bas has never forgotten--or forgiven.

Haunted by a vision that she's destined to create a weapon that will destroy thousands, Myst was never impulsive--until she met the irresistibly handsome Bas. But with the Brotherhood, the enemy of the high-bloods hunting for her, Myst had to stay on the run, to keep her child, and the world, safe. Now, with the most important thing in both their lives at stake, she and Bas must embark on a treacherous journey to save Molly, to confront the truth of Myst's fate--and to face their fierce desire for one another.

Why am I waiting?

This is the third book in The Sentinels series by Alexandra Ivy.  I adored the first two books and want to find out what happens to Bas.  Mainly though, I am looking for any mention of the Mave (leader of the high-bloods) and Wolfe (Tagos head of the Sentinels).

"For the magic to choose for us to be together lots of things had to be in line. We had to be compatible, power-wise. I was never going to be able to bind anyone I chose. They had to be able to handle the power of my totem. Second, you have to know each other and want to be bonded. My mark would have never shown up on you if you didn't want me as much as I wanted you. You can tell everyone else that you don't want to be with me me, but I know better," Nate replied. "That's how the bond works."

I like how upfront and open Nate is being with Cassie. The circumstance behind her mistrust of him stink, here is hoping that he finds away back into her life. There is something about this guy that has me cheering him on, yelling at Cassie to give him a second chance.

Review: Ash (Hive Trilogy #1)

Author Jaymin Eve and Leia Stone
Format e-book
Print Length 201 pages
Publisher self
Published December 15, 2015

8 hrs and 30 mins

Are you an Ash?

*Increased stamina
*Lack of appetite
*Anger outbursts
*Insatiable thirst
*Beauty & Strength
*Male

Call the hotline if these symptoms come on suddenly!

Turns out Charlie Bennet was all of those things except the last. Don’t let the name fool you, Charlie was all woman and she wanted nothing to do with the ash … until the day she found out she was one.

It all started when infected bats bit a small group of humans and created what are now called vampires. Then, the male vampires knocked up some female humans and the result was a gorgeous race of all male ash. Superhuman freaks that had looks to kill.

Charlie is the first female ash, aka unicorn of the Hive – the gated compound in Portland that the humans have designated to isolate vampires and ash from society.

Problem? The Hive is full and only a select few will be allowed to live there. To live at all, really. If Charlie wants to earn the right to become a citizen of the Hive, she will have to survive the culling – a series of fights to the death. And guess what? Just because she’s a girl doesn’t mean she’ll get special treatment.

Good thing there’s Ryder, the mysterious lead ash enforcer, who seems to always have her back. But when secrets bubble to the surface, it will take more than one guy to save her.

My Opinion

While all the gals around her are swooning over the Ash, in their class, in the clubs, on the street. Charlie sees them for what they really are- monsters. That is until she finds out she is one. Talk about a Holy heck moment. Not only is she an Ash, she is the only female one at all. So, she is uprooted from her life and thrown into the Hive. Sort of like residential housing for the Ash, except there are only a few accepted every year- to weed out the weak they do a thing called the culling. A fight to the death.

Charlie starts out a level headed college student, and ends up a college drop-out that isn’t so level headed. Being declared an Ash guarantees her dropping out of college and taking part of the culling promises some mental issues. Honestly she isn’t supposed to survive the culling (that is pretty much what the elders are banking on) but she does. Her trainer Ryder, doesn’t focus too much on what she can’t do, or doesn’t have. He relies instead on her strengths which is a nice change. Ryder tries to protect Charlie at a distance. You find out later what his issue is but the at a distance part puts a hampering on the romance/ chemistry part of the story.

I liked Charlie, I did. That being said there are things about her that got to be a tad bit annoying. Example- does she ever stop thinking about Ryder? I mean gal gots it bad for a guy that is purposely keeping his distance. She also seems to be keeping secrets- from her family, her friends, her vampire sponsor, her supporters. She is bitter about all things Ash and Hive related. I get it I do, it’s just dang gal talk about biting the hand that feeds you- literally. Plus, she whines a little…okay a lot. It took some getting use to since whining is a no no in my world.

Ryder has issues. He is the main guy interest, although I found Lucas had more appeal to me. Lucas is Charlie’s vamp sponsor. Why he is interested in her no one knows but I bet it is for nefarious ends. Back to Ryder, he is the leader of the enforcers. Who’s man job is to protect the humans for the rouge vamp/ash. He had it rough when he became an Ash and so holds people at a distance. I am hoping in the next book, we are shown more of his personality.

Ash is a good start to a series with great potential. It entertained me enough to make me wonder about the direction that story is going in.

My Rating 3 out of 5 stars

Review: The Wedding Pact (The O'Malleys #2)

Author Katee Robert
Format e-ARC
Print Length 352 pages
Publisher Forever

Published April 26, 2016 New York Times and USA Today bestselling author Katee Robert continues her smoking-hot series about the O'Malleys—wealthy, powerful, and full of scandalous family secrets.

Carrigan O'Malley has always known her arranged marriage would be more about power and prestige than passion. But after one taste of the hard-bodied, whiskey-voiced James Halloran, she's ruined for anyone else. Too bad James and his family are enemy number 1.

Hallorans vs. O'Malleys—that's how it's always been. James should be thinking more about how to expand his family's empire instead of how silky Carrigan's skin is against his and how he can next get her into his bed. Those are dangerous thoughts. But not nearly as dangerous as he'll be if he can't get what he wants: Carrigan by his side for the rest of their lives.

My Opinion

Carrigan and James first met in The Marriage Contract, and at times stole the show away from the two main characters of that tale- Teague and Callista. Their chemistry and interactions were explosive. Needless to say I have been waiting for what seemed like forever to get their story. The Wedding Pact did not disappoint.

These two come from two opposing mobster families. For the last several years, Carrigan has played the role of the dutiful catholic daughter. One who may have aspirations for the church, only a few know that it is a ruse to keep her daddy from marrying her off to another family for more power. As the oldest daughter, he can’t marry off the youngest two before her. That way Sloan and Keira are safe, at least that is what Carrigan has been telling herself. Her daddy has had enough- she must decide between her suitors before her birthday. Which is a month away- what the what? That is not enough time, but he has been waiting for several years.

James is the second son, he should not have inherited the Hallorans family business or the troubles that come with it. Yet, fate intervened and now it is his. Not only is the head of the Halloran family, he can’t get the O’Malley daughter out of his head. One night was all it took for her to consume him, and for him to make a mistake that could cost him a chance at love.

Carrigan is strong-willed, smart and a tad bit conniving. The death of her beloved brother has taken its toll on her and everyone in her family. She knows what she has to do- marry for power. But it doesn’t stop her from having a little fun before hand.

James is tough, yet patient. He is trying his hardest to turn his family around- away from the life of crime and into more legitimate enterprises. His daddy is in jail, his older brother dead it should be easy. He didn’t bank on his little brother or the fact that others may want to move into his neighborhood now that leadership is changing hands. He sees the spark in Carrigan and he wants to watch is burn. He knows they are not for each other but that doesn’t stop him.

The Wedding Pact is burning hot. Just as flame worthy as The Marriage Contract. This is the first mobster series that I have liked. I cannot wait for the next book in the series to come out. Hopefully the author will have one planned for Carrigan’s body guard Liam cause dang is he hot.

Some people believe you can fall in love at first sight. When it comes to books I believe those people. Book trailers are an excellent way to fall in love at first sight. I hope to feature a book trailer here every Saturday to help you fall in love at first sight..

The Fates are cackling their bony asses off…
It’s been a year since Seth made the deal with the gods that pledged his life to them. And so far, the
jobs they’ve given him have been violent and bloody–which is kind of all right with him. But now Apollo has something else in mind for Seth. He’s got to play protector while keeping his hands and fingers off, and for someone who really has a problem with restraint, this new assignment might be the most challenging yet.

Josie has no idea what this crazy hot guy’s deal might be, but it’s a good bet that his arrival means the new life she started after leaving home is about to be thrown into an Olympian-sized blender turned up to puree. Either Josie is going insane or a nightmare straight out of ancient myth is gunning for her.

But it might be the unlikely attraction simmering between her and the golden-eyed, secret-keeping Seth that may prove to be the most dangerous thing of all.

Because history has once again been flipped to repeat.

Review: The Natural History of Us

Author Rachel Harris
Format e-ARC
Print Length 297 pages
Publisher Spencer Hill Press
Published April 5, 2016

One class assignment. One second chance at love. The school player is all in. Now he needs to win back the sweet commitment girl who's forever owned his heart.

Justin Carter has a secret. He's not the total player Fairfield Academy believes him to be. Not really. In fact, he used to be a one-woman guy...and his feelings for her never went away. Too bad he broke her heart three years ago and made sure to ruin any chance she'd ever forgive him.

Peyton Williams is a liar. She pretends to be whole, counting down the days until graduation and helping her parents at the family ranch. But the truth is, she's done everything she can to get over Justin, and graduation is just around the corner. With graduation one short month away, she'll soon break free from the painful memories and start her life fresh. Of course, she has to get through working with him on one last assignment first.

For Justin, nothing ever felt as right as being with Peyton, and now that fate's given him a shot at redemption, he's determined to make the most of it. And for Peyton...well, Justin Carter has always been her kryptonite.

My Opinion

The Natural History of Us is my new favorite YA contemporary! It is told in dual points of view in two different periods of time (present day and three years ago). The switch-a-roo was a bit much in the beginning but eventually I fell into the pattern. Who the characters are then are not who they are today.

Justin is the star catcher of the high school baseball team. Peyton, a former rodeo princess who had a medical set back. Three years ago they were secretly madly in love with each other. It was a secret due to number of factors, like her daddy being the head baseball coach. They ended up breaking up- Justin goes on to be a player, and Peyton the sweet girl next door type. Neither truly get over the other, both still hurting from a love gone wrong. Their FACs teacher pairs them for a final project- the progression of relationships (dating, wedding, honeymoon, starting a family). Peyton doesn’t want to be paired with Justin- he did break her heart. Justin is hopeful that this will allow him to win her back.

Justin is one of those characters that even when he is jerk you end up hoping he gets his happily ever after. From past to present Justin, you get to see his character growth. He hasn’t had the easiest home life, although you wouldn’t know that standing on the outside. It took him a long time to overcome the damage caused by his parents. He use to base his decisions on his upbringing, yet as a senior so close to graduation that he could taste it, he decided to base a decision or two on his heart. He is confident, when he makes a mistake he owns up to it. He tries really tries to do his best by Peyton.

Peyton, from the past, is self-assured. She embraced life and all that it has to hand her. Then the break-up happened. Justin was her first, her only love. When he broke her heart, she folded within herself. She becomes cautious, afraid even of hurting again. This dictates some of her decisions in the present. While it made me sad, I understand where she is coming from. I want her to get her spunk back, I want her to be daring again. Mostly I just wanted her to get back together with Justin.

The Natural History of Us is about young love, relationship mistakes and teenagers growing up. Sometimes it is hard to let go of your first love. Sometimes it is harder to stay with them. Mostly it is hardest to forgive them.

My Rating 4 out of 5 stars

His soft lips descended to press on mine. The first touch was gentle, barely the brush of our mouths
together, but as I fell further into him, his breath hitched and his hands came around my waist.

"You came along out of no where and you completely disarmed me. You made me feel. And now I don't know what the hell to do about it. I don't know what I'm ready for..."

There is something about Charlie and Ryder that just make me want to swoon. It could be how he tries to protect her from everything. It could be that she tries to save everyone else. Or is could just be the tension that is there. Doesn't matter really, I just like their story.

Waiting on Wednesday (15) The Problem with Forever

Hey y'all, thanks so much for stopping by my WoW!

Waiting On Wednesday is a weekly meme, hosted by Jill at Breaking the Spine which spotlights upcoming releases that we're eagerly anticipating.

From #1 New York Times bestselling author Jennifer L. Armentrout comes a riveting new story about friendship, survival, and finding your voice.

For some people, silence is a weapon. For Mallory “Mouse” Dodge, it’s a shield. Growing up, she learned that the best way to survive was to say nothing. And even though it’s been four years since her nightmare ended, she’s beginning to worry that the fear that holds her back will last a lifetime.

Now, after years of homeschooling with loving adoptive parents, Mallory must face a new milestone—spending her senior year at public high school. But of all the terrifying and exhilarating scenarios she’s imagined, there’s one she never dreamed of—that she’d run into Rider Stark, the friend and protector she hasn’t seen since childhood, on her very first day.

It doesn’t take long for Mallory to realize that the connection she shared with Rider never really faded. Yet the deeper their bond grows, the more it becomes apparent that she’s not the only one grappling with the lingering scars from the past. And as she watches Rider’s life spiral out of control, Mallory faces a choice between staying silent and speaking out—for the people she loves, the life she wants, and the truths that need to be heard.

Why am I waiting?

Umm... I puffy heart love this author. Pretty much anything she writes I read. Yep, that is why.

Teaser Tuesday (15) The Natural History of Us

Teaser Tuesdays is a weekly bookish meme, hosted by MizB of Should Be Reading. Anyone can play along! Just do the following:

• Grab your current read
• Open to a random page
• Share two (2) “teaser” sentences from somewhere on that page
• BE CAREFUL NOT TO INCLUDE SPOILERS! (make sure that what you share doesn’t give too much away! You don’t want to ruin the book for others!)
• Share the title & author, too, so that other TT participants can add the book to their TBR Lists if they like your teasers!

When I began lowering my mouth, she stuttered, "I... I'm confused."

I touched my forehead against hers. "And I'm yours."

I liked Justin in The Fine Art of Pretending.  So it is of no surprise that he makes me smile in this one.  So sweet.

Review: Released

Author Jus Accardo
Format e-ARC
Print Length 174 pages
Publisher Entangled Publishing, LLC Embrace
Published March 28, 2016

Jax Flynn’s life just went from bad to worse. He was already sharing his body with a demon named Azirak, but after killing its mate… Well, shit got real. Now the demon has taken control of Jax’s body and everything he cares for is at stake, including Samantha, the girl he loves. Yeah, that’s not going to happen. It’s time Jax showed everyone what he was really made of.

My Opinion

I wanted to read this book, yet I didn’t want to read it. I loved Ruined, Embraced not so much. I enjoyed to book but I so wanted the happy in love butterfly feel that loving Ruined got me. For Embraced it wasn’t there. Hence apprehension when starting Released, unwarranted apprehension.

Released is the final book in The Eternal Balance series. It starts right were Embraced left off. Azirak is now in charge of Jax’s body (he is trapped inside) and Sam is mad as all get out. Not at Jax, but at Azirak. She also doesn’t trust him so she is sticking around like white on rice until she can find a way to get Azirak out of Jax. That is her main goal, her only goal. Heckle wants Jax and Sam to track down a stone that once belonged to Azirak, a magical stone (Brim Stone) that can through things out of balance. They have to find it before Chase, Jax evil twin, gets it.

So off Jax/Azirak go with Sam in tow to find the Brim Stone. It isn’t an easy task, as Chase will do anything to find the Brim Stone as well. Along they way they find a powerful witch, Van. Van can help them, yet Trackers (hell hounds) are after her- Azirak saves her. Turns out her sister was Azirak’s mate, yeah talk about eerie.

Sam has shown us already that she is tough, loyal and determined. Azirak, taking over the body of the man she loves has to mess with her mind. Yet, she is holding it together. She is developing plans. She is trying to save Jax. You gotta like her spunk, her drive, and her love for all things Jax.

Jax is the only human to break away from their demon. He is also the only one to live as longs as he and his brother have. He fights for control, he fights for intervention, mostly he fights for Sam. Theirs is an epic love, one of mutual respect.

On a totally unrelated topic check out the cover. It is kinds hot and kinda spooky at the same time.

Released was a fantastic conclusion to a good series. Everything I loved about Ruined was back in full force. The story had me gasping in angst, laughing in humor, and pretty much just cheering the couple on. I really hope that there is a spin-off story about Van, she rocked it pretty hard in this book. Yeah, she was new but still. If not a spin-off about Van how about one about Heckle? That would be a fabulous tale.

My Rating 4 out of 5 stars

Review: Conspiracy Boy

Author Cecily White
Format e-ARC
Print Length 352 pages
Publisher Entangled: Teen
Published March 7, 2016

Nobody said senior year was going to be easy, but I wasn’t expecting pure hell, either. That’s right. HELL.

Demons attacking. Cheerleaders screaming. Vampires and werewolves asking where the bathroom is. Just another day here at St. Michael’s Guardian Training Academy. It wouldn’t be so bad if the administration would let me get back to my demon-slaying duties like every other angelblood on campus. But with my bondmate Jack promoted to head trainer, my annoying fiancé Luc trying to start a political uprising, and that pesky prophecy still floating around predicting I’m going to kill everyone I love...well, let’s just say “complicated” took on a whole new meaning.

But things are looking up.

If I can survive Luc’s deadly Sovereign Trials and keep my evil twin sister from starting a war, Jack and I might actually have a chance of saving the world. If not, at least I won't have to worry about what to wear to prom.

My Opinion

Conspiracy Boy starts off pretty much where Prophecy girl left off, Ami is still killing demons. Jackson is still running in to save the day, which makes sense they are dating and he is her bondmate. There are two difference- no bestie, and apparently she is Luc’s fledgling (Jackson’s vamp cousin). They have to go through the Immortal Sovereign Trial but before that can happen Ami must find out who sent an assassin after her. She also has to figure out how to fulfill Gabriel’s prophecy without killing Jackson. They thought that they had won that battle at the end of Prophecy Girl, but the truth is- it had just begun.

Ami is still the sassy, butt-kicking Guardian that we know and love. She has snarky down to a science, and can take on a demon with the best of them. She isn’t perfect, she gets jealous, she argues, she back talks. She is also extremely loyal, and ever hopeful. She is impulsive and reactive. I like her.

Jackson is ever the self-sacrificing Watcher. He is the logical one of their pairing, the plotter- the mastermind. Everything he does he does to protect her and their bond.

Luc gets well… more interesting in this book than in the previous one. He is still protective of his inner circle. His character develops strongly in this book, with several scenes where he dominates. I like that he is in charge of the Society. It gives him purpose, something to do, and a way to help.

The big baddie, I wasn’t expecting. I should have been but I felt blindsided. I thought it was a different person, one who actually was trying to help. That makes for a good book. One that keeps you guessing, especially one where your guess is wrong yet you are still happy.

Conspiracry Boy is a worthy follow-up to Prophecy Girl. While it didn’t wow me as much as the first one did, it kept me entertained. In the long run, that is what matters.

My Rating 4 out of 5 stars

"I love her.  It didn't start out that way, but sometimes you have to take these things as they come.  I've never met a woman like her, and I could go the rest of my life and that would still be true."  His breath caught, and he didn't bother to hid the feeling that welled up.  "She's everything, Teague.  You get what I'm saying?"

I had a different scene picked out but then James had to go and call Teague (Carrigan's brother) up to ask for help.  Knowing their history this was a hard call to make, and yet he did it for her.

Waiting on Wednesday (14) The Flamecaster

Hey y'all, thanks so much for stopping by my WoW!

Waiting On Wednesday is a weekly meme, hosted by Jill at Breaking the Spine which spotlights upcoming releases that we're eagerly anticipating.

The first in a thrilling new four-book fantasy series from New York
Times bestselling author Cinda Williams Chima, set in the same world as her beloved Seven Realms series, a generation later

Adrian sul’Han, known as Ash, is a trained healer with a powerful gift of magic—and a thirst for revenge. Ash is forced into hiding after a series of murders throws the queendom into chaos. Now Ash is closer than he’s ever been to killing the man responsible, the cruel king of Arden. As a healer, can Ash use his powers not to save a life but to take it?

Abandoned at birth, Jenna Bandelow was told that the mysterious magemark on the back of her neck would make her a target. But when the King’s Guard launches a relentless search for a girl with a mark like hers, Jenna assumes that it has more to do with her role as a saboteur than any birth-based curse. Though Jenna doesn’t know why she’s being hunted, she knows that she can’t get caught.

Eventually, Ash’s and Jenna’s paths will collide in Arden. Thrown together by chance and joined by their hatred of the king, they will come to rescue each other in ways they cannot yet imagine.

Set in the world of the acclaimed Seven Realms series a generation later, this is a thrilling story of dark magic, chilling threats, and two unforgettable characters walking a knife-sharp line between life and death.

Why I am waiting?

This is another fantasy novel that just looks really good to me. Magic, two people set on hurting the establishment- yeah, I am in.

Author Interview: Chris Cannon

The other day I got a chance to sit down with Chris Cannon, author to one of my favorite dragon series~Going Down in Flames.  Hopefully our chat will leave you as excited as it did me.  Afterwards there is short excerpt from Trail by Fire, which released yesterday.

~Why do you write about dragons?
Doesn’t everyone have dragons flying around in their heads? No? Just Me? That’s weird.

~Your books have a lot of food in them.  My gal Bryn can surely eat.  I feel like there is a story behind this.
Apparently I’m obsessed with food. I didn’t realize this was the case until other people told me that reading my books made them hungry. Some people found it annoying. Fellow foodies like myself enjoyed it. I will even admit to having a crush on Guy Fieri from Diners, Drive-ins, and Dives.

~I absolutely love this series. Can you give us a hint- maybe a number of how many books we can expect to be about Bryn and this beautiful dragon world you created?
My editor pointed out that my books span about 3months in the characters lives. So Bryn’s first year at school will be covered in four books. I’d planned to write about Bryn’s senior year too, which would make eight books.

~ Plotter or a Pantser?
I’d love to say that I plot out my stories using color-coded post-its and metallic sharpies. That is not the case. I am a total Pantser. I know the direction I want to go, and then I sit down to write. I once outlined an entire book and found I couldn’t write it because I already knew the ending. Weird. I know.

~Just in case someone doesn't know- what is the reading order of this series?
Going Down In Flames
Bridges Burned
Trial By Fire

~What do you want your readers to take away from these dragon tales?
I love to make people laugh. Bryn and Clint can say all the smart ass things that I think but don’t utter aloud.

Thank you so much for taking the time to talk with me.  I absolutely adore dragon stories and this series is one of the best!

Excerpt from Trial by Fire

Skipping two days of classes seemed to have multiple consequences, like extra homework and people staring at her like they had when she’d first come to school. She hadn’t missed that level of scrutiny and wasn’t happy to have it back.

“What is everyone’s problem?” Bryn asked as she walked on the treadmill in Basic Movement.

Valmont ran on the treadmill next to her, not breaking a sweat. “We are a curiosity.”

“I wish we could fly today.” Something inside of her ached to shift and take flight, but Mrs. Anderson refused to let her fly until she had clearance from a medic.

“After classes today, why don’t we find Medic Williams and ask her for a note, so you’ll be able to fly tomorrow.”

“Or we could go flying tonight.” Bryn increased the speed on her treadmill to a jog.

“Sorry, I’m siding with the authorities on this. If you need more time to recover, then that’s what you’ll have.” She glared at him.

“That look doesn’t work on me.” He grinned. Then the corners of his mouth turned down.

“What?” Bryn checked the area for whatever had made him frown. Jaxon stalked in their direction. Great. When he reached her, he smacked the button to turn off her treadmill.

“You need to joust or do something to show everyone you aren’t weak.”

Valmont turned his treadmill off and moved to stand at Bryn’s side. “You need to work on your manners.”

Jaxon didn’t even acknowledge Valmont. “I’m trying to help you.”

“Why?” It was a serious question.

“Because I don’t like being associated with anyone who is weak,” Jaxon snapped.

Now she understood. “You went from caring and concerned to a self-centered asshat in one sentence.”

“You do realize your opinion of me means nothing.” Jaxon stepped closer. “Go do something to prove you’re not spineless.”

He’d crossed a line. “I could start by blasting you across the room.”

“You could try,” Jaxon said. “But you wouldn’t succeed.”

The desire to shoot a fireball at his head had flames crawling up the back of her throat.

Valmont put his arm around her shoulders. “He’s an idiot, but he knows how his Clan thinks. Let’s go practice with broad swords.”

“Fine.” Bryn let Valmont guide her toward the lockers where the equipment was kept. Valmont squeezed her shoulders.

“You do realize, when you face off with Jaxon, you won’t be doing it alone.”

She wanted to argue but knew that would hurt his feelings, so she nodded in acknowledgment. Why did it feel like she was lying to him?

Valmont opened several lockers until he found what he wanted. Pulling a set of rapiers from the locker, he frowned. “Are these toothpicks the only blades they have?” Bryn chuckled.

“Jaxon and his friends have trained with those since they were five. I think your broadsword is a much better weapon.”

“Agreed. But for the Bryn-is-still-a-badass show, I guess we’ll use these.”

“I like the sound of that. It would look good on a T-shirt.”

Valmont pointed toward the ring. “After you, Ms. Badass.”

“Does that make you Mr. Badass?” Bryn asked.

He grinned. “I think it does.”

Once in the ring, Bryn faced off with Valmont, which felt weird. “I’m not sure we can—” He came toward her swinging his sword in a wide arc. She blocked it with her sword. “Hey!”

“Showtime.” Valmont’s eyes darted to the side. A crowd was gathering. Fan-freaking-tastic. Ignoring the crowd, she shoved Valmont’s sword back, forcing him to retreat. He came at her, and she blocked. She swung at him, and he dodged the blow. Faster and faster, they dueled. The sound of wooden sword clacking against wooden sword played out like a song.

The fact that she hadn’t been able to touch Valmont with her sword both irritated her and made her proud. Her knight had skills. His sword whizzed by her shoulder. Too close. She focused on pushing him back. Sweat ran between her shoulder blades. He held his ground, giving little.

She raised her sword and brought it down with all her might, he blocked and crack half his sword was gone. She stopped wide-eyed.

Valmont held out his stubby sword. “I think you won.”

The crowd around the ring drifted away. Jaxon caught her eye and gave a nod of approval. She reined in the instinct to roll her eyes or flip him off. Instead, she gave a curt nod back. When she made eye contact with Valmont, his jaw muscle was clenched. “What’s wrong?”

“I hate that Jaxon was right.”

Bryn laughed. If that didn’t prove they were meant for each other, nothing would.
