Review: Dead Beautiful
Author Yvonne Woon
Format e-ARC
Print Length 464 pages
Publisher Disney-Hyperion
Published September 21, 2010
On the morning of her sixteenth birthday, Renée Winters was still an ordinary girl. She spent her summers at the beach, had the perfect best friend, and had just started dating the cutest guy at school. No one she'd ever known had died. But all that changes when she finds her parents dead in the Redwood Forest, in what appears to be a strange double murder.
After the funeral Renée’s wealthy grandfather sends her to Gottfried Academy, a remote and mysterious boarding school in Maine, where she finds herself studying subjects like Philosophy, Latin, and the “Crude Sciences.”
It’s there that she meets Dante Berlin, a handsome and elusive boy to whom she feels inexplicably drawn. As they grow closer, unexplainable things begin to happen, but Renée can’t stop herself from falling in love. It’s only when she discovers a dark tragedy in Gottfried’s past that she begins to wonder if the Academy is everything it seems.
Little does she know, Dante is the one hiding a dangerous secret, one that has him fearing for her life.
Dead Beautiful is both a compelling romance and thought-provoking read, bringing shocking new meaning to life, death, love, and the nature of the soul.
My Opinion
A book for those who love to read all things paranormal in the YA world. Dead Beautiful is an easy read, that will chase the hours away before you know it.
Renee finds her parents dead body and in less than a week her grandpa ships her to a boarding school on the other side of America. There she meets a bubbly roommate (Eleanor) and a nerdy boy (Nathaniel) who become her two best friends. She tries to stay in touch with her bestie from well birth but that is not going so well. You see, they no longer have anything in common.
Renee reminds me of a typical teenager, who wants to be liked but wants to appear not to care. She does internalize it a bit. Seriously though, who can blame her? She has just been uprooted from her very normal life and dropped in the land of weird.
Dante is a fascinating love interest for her. First starters he is not mean- not at all. He seems genuine and sincere in his pursuit of her. Yes, he does have an air of mystery to him- carried even farther because he will not kiss her. This only serves to make him more appealing.
Things get interesting when her roommate disappears and no one knows where she has gone off to. Renee and Dante are dragged into the mystery of Eleanor’s disappearance. Things take an interesting turn once Eleanor is found.
Overall, a fun read that will charm you into spending a few hours at Gottfried Academy.
My Rating 3 stars out of 5

Waiting on Wednesday (5) Ignite Me
Waiting On Wednesday is a weekly meme, hosted by Jill at Breaking
the Spine which spotlights upcoming releases that we're eagerly
anticipating.
The heart-stopping conclusion to the New York Times bestselling Shatter Me series, which Ransom Riggs, bestselling author of Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children, called "a thrilling, high-stakes saga of self-discovery and forbidden love"
Juliette now knows she may be the only one who can stop the Reestablishment. But to take them down, she'll need the help of the one person she never thought she could trust: Warner. And as they work together, Juliette will discover that everything she thought she knew-about Warner, her abilities, and even Adam-was wrong.
Why I am waiting?
Umm... have you read the first two books in this series? If not, run to the book store as soon as humanly possible. I really want to know who she picks- dreamy Adam or evil Warren.

He is ubber cute.
Tall and with a face so handsome even old ladies swooned at the sight of it, he was the guy every girl crushed on. Didn't hurt that he had a bit of a bad-boy, daredevil reputation, either.
He defends people who can not defend themselves.
More than once I had watched him stand up for the little guy, like that time he told off a senior during a pep rally our freshman year when the guy started making fun of one of the freshman cheerleaders for being bigger than the other girls on the squad. He is not afraid to admit he is wrong.
"I'm sorry," Eli said, his voice throaty with emotion.
He is a take charge kinda guy.
His focus on this whole investigation thing was a bit scary, but also encouraging in the way it built my confidence about our chances of success.
I think the best thing about Eli is that he really is just an ordinary nice guy. Often times in books the nice guy does not have a good time of it. Eli is different.

Review: Heaven and Hellsbane
Author: Paige Cuccaro
Format: e-ARC
Print Length: 400 pages

Published August 27, 2013
Someone’s killing angels and turning the half human, half
angel illorum warriors against their angelic supporters. If the supernatural
baddy behind the attacks isn’t stopped soon, Heaven itself could fall victim.
The Council of Seven has called in the best they’ve got to find the killers,
and no one’s more surprised than Emma Jane Hellsbane when it’s her phone that
rings.
But when her own angelic mentor—and off-limits hottie—Eli is targeted, Emma takes it personally. With Emma hot on the trail of the growing army of assassins, though, hackles start to raise around her. Everyone wants to know if she’s in it to protect all angels or just one in particular. The Council has their suspicions…and so does Emma’s boyfriend.
Now Emma isn’t just fighting off demons, rogue nephilim, and Fallen angels, but she’s defending her honor as well. The problem is even Emma Jane isn’t sure of her motives. One thing she does know: if she doesn’t figure out the killers’ identities soon, she may not live long enough to know what, or who, she really wants.
It’s all in a day’s work as Heaven’s ultimate bounty hunter.

It’s all in a day’s work as Heaven’s ultimate bounty hunter.
My Opinion
As an illorum, Emma Jane is supposed to fight demons and
Fallen Angels in the name of Heaven. She
has to do this due to the sins of her father- a Fallen angel himself. She must continue to fight demons and Fallen
Angels until she kills her own father.
If she manages to hill her own father, she can get her life back. Until then she has imposed a
self-isolationism from all of her loved ones except for Officer Dan. Who knows what she is because he is an untapped
one- this does cause some tension on their relationship- he wants to help her.
Eli is her magister- an Angel mentor that tries hard not to
intervene in the war. During this war,
Emma Jane and Eli have gotten close- some are beginning to think too close. Tommy in the previous book did warn Emma Jane
that she could mean Eli’s fall from grace.
While nothing had happened yet, the Council felt that it should
intervene and give Emma Jane a new magister.
I was kinda disappointed in Emma Jane in this book. In the previous book, she was responsible and
faced the threat head on. In this book,
she goes off grid for a few days. She is
a bit full of herself not once admitting that she needs help. While she should
be showing the Council respect even if she is mad at them, I felt at times that
she was acting a little like a spoiled brat who was not getting her way. Halfway through the book is a game changer,
it will be intriguing to see how it plays out. She is also unsure of what/who she wants. A normal life or an illorum life? Dan or Eli?
I seriously wanted to shake her at times.
Overall, I liked the book.
A fast easy read that will entertain you for a few hours. Hopefully the next installment will answer all the questions that will pop in the readers head after the game changer. (Trying hard to be spoiler friendly).

Waiting on Wednesday (4) The Nightmare Dilemma
Waiting On Wednesday is a weekly meme, hosted by Jill at Breaking the Spine which spotlights upcoming releases that we're eagerly anticipating.
The second in a thrilling new fantastical mystery series
Dusty Everhart might be able to predict the future through the dreams of her crush, Eli Booker, but that doesn’t make her life even remotely easy. When one of her mermaid friends is viciously assaulted and left for dead, and the school’s jokester, Lance Rathbone, is accused of the crime, Dusty’s as shocked as everybody else. Lance needs Dusty to prove his innocence by finding the real attacker, but that’s easier asked than done. Eli’s dreams are no help, more nightmares than prophecies.
To make matters worse, Dusty’s ex-boyfriend has just been acquitted of conspiracy and is now back at school, reminding Dusty of why she fell for him in the first place. The Magi Senate needs Dusty to get close to him, to discover his real motives. But this order infuriates Eli, who has started his own campaign for Dusty’s heart.
As Dusty takes on both cases, she begins to suspect they’re connected to something bigger. And there’s something very wrong with Eli’s dreams, signs that point to a darker plot than they could have ever imagined.
Why am I waiting?
I have actually been waiting for this one since the first one was published. This is the second book in the series and in The Nightmare Affair I fell in love with Eli and Dusty's story. I like that is is a different kind of ya paranormal romance and am eager to find out what happens to the characters.

Review: Untold
Author: Sarah Rees Brennan
Format: eBook
Print Length: 336 pages
Publisher: Simon and Schuster UK
Published: August 29, 2013
It’s time to choose sides… On the surface, Sorry-in-the-Vale is a sleepy English town. But Kami Glass knows the truth. Sorry-in-the-Vale is full of magic. In the old days, the Lynburn family ruled with fear, terrifying the people into submission in order to kill for blood and power. Now the Lynburns are back, and Rob Lynburn is gathering sorcerers so that the town can return to the old ways.
But Rob and his followers aren’t the only sorcerers in town. A decision must be made: pay the blood sacrifice, or fight. For Kami, this means more than just choosing between good and evil. With her link to Jared Lynburn severed, she’s now free to love anyone she chooses. But who should that be?
The book starts off with a high note- an army of scarecrow attacking Kami and Angela. Kami and Angela of course using snark and cunning intellect to beat the scarecrows back. Jared and Ash do help (okay mainly Jared). Kami and Angela’s relationship still best friends even after what happened in Unspoken. Supportive and always each other’s side-kick, although there is a little bit of doubt between these two. Doubt caused by the secrets they kept- and let out. But theirs is a friendship that will overcome the pesky naysayers.
Jared and Kami on the other hands are on the outs. Both avoiding the other, yet longing for each other. Jared not knowing what to do is acting like a jerk. Kami unsure of herself and her feelings for Jared is just lonely. Ash is an added complication, that I do begin to stop hating. His is a lonely existence, with all of his friends hating him due to his role in being evil.
Now the townspeople are the ones that I am hating on. Hello there is a guy that wants you to pay a freaking blood sacrifice in order to stop him from pouring down hellfire and damnation onto your town. And you are willingly going to do it? You are not going to fight? You are not even going to talk about fighting? Did something hit you over your head? Hello… if you only had a brain… And how often are you going to pay this sacrifice yearly? Bi-yearly? Every decade? I mean what is one or two dead people in the grand scheme of things.
Thankfully Lillian knows that she has to fight her husband and sister. Unfortunately, she forgets what it is like to be teenager and tries to do it without the help of others. BIG MISTAKE! A big mistake that leads to a cliff-hanger of an ending. One that I did not see coming.
Sarah Rees Breanna really is trying to kill her readers. Why oh why? Please let him stay safe, Kami do what it is that you do best- believe in him. And blast it where are the other sorcerers that can help kill Rob? I mean seriously? Only the humans will stand up to him?
Holly- beautiful gal at Kami’s school that cons her way into their group.
Angela- Kami’s anti-people best friend.
Ash- Jared’s imperfect cousin, me hates him.
Rusty- Angela's brother, he pretty much rocks of awesomeness

I absolutely loved Unspoken, a true gem of a book. Which is why I was so terribly looking forward to Untold. Terribly why you must ask? Well Untold is the sophomore book in a series aka the filler book. Also known as the one that does not always deliver. Will Sarah Rees Brennan’s book Untold circume to the sophomore curse? He has a sense of humor.
“Are you OK?" I asked.
"I think so." Logan stared at me, and a smile pulled up his lips. "But maybe you should give me mouth-to-mouth, just to make sure.”
Touch of Frost
He would do anything for a kiss.
“Come on, Gypsy girl. I'm bleeding to death here, in case you haven't noticed. At least make it worth my while and kiss me before I die.”
Kiss of Frost
He is logical, in a romantic kinda way.
“You won't hurt me. I know you won't." Logan said.
"How can you be so sure?" I whispered.
"Because you're that Gypsy girl, and I'm the bad-boy Spartan. And I think it's time we were finally together, don't you?”
Dark Frost
He is loyal.
“No matter what happens, I'll always come back to you."
"Promise?" I asked in a shaky voice.
Logan's eyes burned with icy determination. "Promise.”
Crimson Frost
The first thing I found had been a note propped up on his desk:
Seriously, Gyspy girl. Stop looking for me. Love, Logan.
Midnight Frost
The best thing about Logan though is that he has little to no snark. He is not mean to Gwen, he loves her and protects her. From their enemies, from his dad, even sometimes from herself.

Review: The Fiery Heart
Author: Richelle Mead
Format: E-book
Print Length: 438 pages
Publisher: Razorbill
Published: November 19, 2013
Sydney Sage is an Alchemist, one of a group of humans who dabble in magic and serve to bridge the worlds of humans and vampires. They protect vampire secrets - and human lives.
In The Indigo Spell, Sydney was torn between the Alchemist way of life and what her heart and gut were telling her to do. And in one breathtaking moment that Richelle Mead fans will never forget, she made a decision that shocked even her. . . .
But the struggle isn't over for Sydney. As she navigates the aftermath of her life-changing decision, she still finds herself pulled in too many directions at once. Her sister Zoe has arrived, and while Sydney longs to grow closer to her, there's still so much she must keep secret. Working with Marcus has changed the way she views the Alchemists, and Sydney must tread a careful path as she harnesses her profound magical ability to undermine the way of life she was raised to defend. Consumed by passion and vengeance, Sydney struggles to keep her secret life under wraps as the threat of exposure — and re-education — looms larger than ever.
Pulses will race throughout this smoldering fourth installment in the New York Times bestselling Bloodlines series, where no secret is safe.
My Opinion
The Fiery Heart was a fabulous edition to a great series. I loved the pacing and character development, although there were times when I kinda wished it was more action-packed. The story line that felt more centered around the mystery of blood and tattoos than actual action.
Sydney and Adrian are now a couple- which is nice but I feel that a lot of the tension that was between them has disappeared. Although I do love them as a couple- they are very lovey dovey, which surprised me a little. Especially with how serious Sydney normally is. I think with them as a couple Sydney is also a little more careless which will not do well for her in her line of work.
Syndey’s little sister is a piece of work. A jealous little brat if you will. I wanted to shake her and call her mean names. She is really selfish and conceited. She is also convening and will just evil. Can you tell I do not like her? Hopefully, something bad will happen to her, and a Moroi will have to save her. Then maybe her viewpoints will change. She is also a bit on the immature side
“ You are, Sydney. My sister! Why is everything else more important than me?”
Umm.. cause she is trying to save you- you silly immature little sister. As well as trying to save Alchemist, and Morio everywhere. Hello, she is Sydney Sage after all.
The secondary characters were pretty kick butt in this addition. Jill with her inside knowledge of Sydrian. Eddie with his ever supportive big brother role. Angeline and Trey were still trying to figure things out. Ms. Terwilliger and Bruno were a nice added touch as well. Neil was a great addition in that he helped to solve the blood mystery, although the girls fighting over him was a little too much.
The ending was OMG are you serious kinda ending. Even though, you could have guessed it a mile away. The urgency in Eddie- his retelling of what happened is what did it in for me. How much more failure can a guy take? The tears started to well in my eyes. And the only thought I had was what will happen to Hopper? I know irrational for sure but seriously that is what I thought. I cannot wait for the next book to come out. July is a long way from now, but it will be worth it. Seeing Adrian get mad and then even will be worth it.
Hopefully, Rose and Abe will be on his side and help him get Sydney back. Because let’s face it- he is better with her.
My Rating 5 out of 5 stars

Waiting on Wednesday (3) Such Sweet Sorrow
Waiting On Wednesday is a weekly meme, hosted by Jill at Breaking the Spine which spotlights upcoming releases that we're eagerly anticipating.
Never was there a tale of more woe than this of Juliet and her Romeo…But true love never dies. Though they’re parted by the veil between the world of mortals and the land of the dead, Romeo believes he can restore Juliet to life, but he’ll have to travel to the underworld with a thoroughly infuriating guide.
Hamlet, Prince of Denmark, may not have inherited his father’s crown, but the murdered king left his son a much more important responsibility—a portal to the Afterjord, where the souls of the dead reside. When the determined Romeo asks for help traversing the treacherous Afterjord, Hamlet sees an opportunity for adventure, and the chance to avenge his father’s death.
In an underworld filled with leviathan monsters, ghoulish shades, fire giants and fierce Valkyrie warriors, Hamlet and Romeo must battle their way through jealousy, despair, and their darkest fears to rescue the fair damsel. Yet finding Juliet is only the beginning, and the Afterjord doesn’t surrender souls without a price…
Why am I waiting?
I love a great Romeo and Juliet re-telling.

This time when her mouth fell on his, he didn't pull away at all. Her tongue slipped between his teeth, teasing at his until he sat up straighter, his free hand at the small of her back, just inside the waistband of her jeans, pulling her closer. He felt silk and lace and skin under his fingertips.

With power comes enemies. Lots of them.
Hunter Garrity just wants to be left alone. He’s learned the hard way that his
unusual abilities come at a price. And he can’t seem to afford any allies.
He’s up to his neck in hostiles. His grandfather, spoiling for a fight. The
Merrick brothers, who think he ratted them out. Calla, the scheming psycho who
wants to use him as bait.
Then there’s Kate Sullivan, the new girl at school. She’s not hostile. She’s
bold. Funny. Hot. But she’s got an agenda, too.
With supposedly secret powers rippling to the surface everywhere around him,
Hunter knows something ugly is about to go down. But finding out what means
he’ll have to find someone he can trust…
My Opinion
I have to be honest, I was a little disappointed in this
edition to the series. Mainly though I
feel that was due to it being Hunter’s story and not one of the brothers. When we were introduced to the series it was
about the Merrick brothers. The novella,
and the first two books were the brother’s stories. Then we get Hunter. Hunter who hunts down elementals.
The story starts off almost where Spark left off. Calla is still around, and still causing
trouble for Hunter. No one of course
believes him in regards to her though.
Why would they when she is the mastermind behind scenes like the one in
the lunchroom. He totally comes off as
guilty. The stuff she accuses him of puts him at odds with his grandpa and
he is systematically kicked out of the farmhouse. Who should come to his rescue by Michael
Merrick. Oh Michael how do I love
you. Let me count the ways- hot, smart,
responsible and always willing to help out.
I could go on and on but this is not about Michael this is about Hunter.
There is a new girl in school, Kate- who happens to be a
guide apprentice. She has it all- great
looks, fabulous personality, lots of snark.
Oh… did I mention a complete psycho for a mentor? Kate is along for the show because she has
already taken down an elemental- the same one who killed her momma.
The chemistry between Hunter and Kate is off the
charts. They both have had bad things
happen to them. Kate handles it better
even though Hunter had the better childhood.
The training that the guides have to go through is mentioned in this
book and holy night is there no way I could have gone through it.
The thing about Hunter that bothers me the most is his lack
of trust in the Merricks. They have been
there for him and he still does not trust them.
He keeps putting his trust in a group of people that have routinely
screwed him over. Why? Oh why?
Speaking of why- the ending is a real tear-jerker. I was like holy heck did she really just do
that? Is this for real? And where does that leave us? One thing for sure, this book is an emotional
roller coaster.
My Rating 3 stars out of 5
Favorite Quote “No, jackass. I blame you. Where’d you learn how to be a friend, anyway?”
Other People
Silver- Kate’s mentor, a guide and a real jerk
Michael- oldest Merrick, best father figure in town
Calla- evil weak elemental, also Hunter’s enemy
Gabriel- Hunter’s best friend, too bad neither of them know
it

Aric from the Weird Girls series is my cuddly book boyfriend of the week. Sure, as a were he could possibly shed some hair on my furniture but I would gladly vacuum it up for a couple of dates with him.
He is willing to help.
Aric's face hardened. "I don't deny you're tough or that you can fight. You have to be to endure the shit you have. But stop feeling like you have to rely on yourself all the time. I'm around now, Celia. You're no longer alone.

Aric sat on the edge of the porch, draping me across his lap. His strong chiseled arms curled around me. My cheek fell against his bare chest and our bodies melded and relaxed into a state of tranquility.

I meant what I told you at Koda and Shayna's wedding, sweetness. You're the one I want to spend my life with.
