Waiting on Wednesday (38) All In

Hey y'all, thanks so much for stopping by my WoW!

Waiting On Wednesday is a weekly meme, hosted by Jill atBreaking the Spine which spotlights upcoming releases that we're eagerly anticipating.

Three casinos. Three bodies. Three days.

After a string of brutal murders in Las Vegas, Cassie Hobbes and the Naturals are called in to investigate. But even with the team's unique profiling talents, these murders seem baffling: unlike many serial killers, this one uses different methods every time. All of the victims were killed in public, yet the killer does not show up on any tape. And each victim has a string of numbers tattooed on their wrist. Hidden in the numbers is a code—and the closer the
Naturals come to unraveling the mystery, the more perilous the case becomes.

Meanwhile, Cassie is dealing with an equally dangerous and much more painful mystery. For the first time in years, there's been a break in her mother's case. As personal issues and tensions between the team mount, Cassie and the Naturals will be faced with impossible odds—and impossible choices.

Why am I waiting?

I enjoy this series. That is the bottom line. It is not like my normal read. There are no aspects of the paranormal to it. Some reason that it sucks me in every time I open the newest release.

"You have no idea what I would do to keep you safe, Jessa. No idea."

I was sure the awed shock registered on my face, just for a moment, before I managed to control my features. That was without a doubt the hottest thing I'd ever heard.

The kiss started slow, tantalizingly slow, as his tongue parted my lips and swept inside. he sucked my bottom lip into his mouth and I groaned deep from my throat, almost a purr.

I promise you the first teaser is even hotter if you know what is going on. Goodness, this kiss makes me want to kiss Braxton. Who would have thought that the fire breathing dragon could be so gentle.

Branded Packs Book 2

Abandoned

When bear shifter, Anya Tucker fell in love with the wrong man, the only thing she left with was a broken heart—and her two bear cubs. Now she’s mended her wounds and learned that in order to raise her babies she can only trust herself. When her sons meet the lazy cat next door and fall heads over tails for him, she’ll do whatever she takes to protect them—even from a past she’d thought she’d left behind.

Cole McDermott is a jaguar on a mission. Long naps, a willing woman, and a full stomach is usually all he needs when it comes to relaxing after a long day of protecting his Pack. Then he meets Anya and the burn of temptation is silky and tantalizing indeed. When a horror from Anya’s past threatens everything she loves, Cole will put everything aside and fight for her family—as well as his own.

Unseen

Nicole Bradley had no reason to live after the humans murdered her son. Not until she learns to hunt down those responsible for his death. Shifting into her wolf form at night, she slips out of the compound, determined to do as much damage as possible. The last thing she expected was to discover secrets that could destroy the SAU.

Polar shifter, Tucker Stone, lives off the grid. It’s the only way the Unseen can avoid being rounded up by the humans and tossed into a compound. Besides, he’s a loner by nature. But he can’t walk away when he sees the pretty female wolf in danger. Risking exposure, he takes her to his hidden den and tries to heal her wounds.

Can a reclusive polar bear and a wolf with a death wish find happiness together?

My Opinion

Hmmm.. where to start? After the actions of the wolf and cat pack in book one of the series the humans had to retaliate. They do this by forcing the bears into the same compound. Either these humans are stupid or they are hoping for a shifter civil war. Too bad they haven’t realized that they have given the shifters a shared enemy to focus on.

Abandoned

Anya is a bear shifter that for some reason hates Cole- a cat shifter. Why no one knows, not even Anya herself. Cole for his part is pretty sweet guy he plays with her kids. Then daily he puts up with their momma yelling at him for them playing with him. He has no clue either why he does this. The babies end up getting kidnapped- by their evil human scientist daddy. Anya and Cole leave the compound to go find them. This is where the story gets a huge HUH from me. In the middle of tracking her babies, who have been kidnapped by a mad scientist, Anya gets the mating heat. That’s right y’all, she has to mate like NOW! That is where her story became game over for me. I just couldn’t- I finished reading it to get to the next one but what the what? Your kids have been taken come on.

Unseen

Nicole is a sad wolf bent on revenge- seven years ago her five year old child had been murdered by human guards. His crime taking off his collar- umm he is five. I understand her need for revenge. I get that she leaves the compound to hurt the SAU- maybe not as badly as they hurt her but still. I liked Tucker for a Polar bear he was kinda cuddly. He recognizes her as his mate almost immediately and that helped move the story along. Since he is unseen and she is collared he had to figure out how to get her off of the compound without worry of discovery. The way they do this is pretty sweet. Let’s just say Tucker is one smart bear.

Overall, this was an interesting addition to the series. I did not like Abandoned but there are plenty of people who do. Unseen was a good solid story, that was interesting and hopefully will impact the direction of the series.

My Rating 3 out of 5 stars

Book Trailer Saturday (27) Etiquette & Espionage and Curtsies & Conspiracies

Some people believe you can fall in love at first sight. When it comes to books I believe those people. Book trailers are an excellent way to fall in love at first sight. I hope to feature a book trailer here every Saturday to help you fall in love at first sight...

It's one thing to learn to curtsy properly. It's quite another to learn to curtsy and throw a knife at the
same time. Welcome to Finishing School.

Fourteen-year-old Sophronia is a great trial to her poor mother. Sophronia is more interested in dismantling clocks and climbing trees than proper manners--and the family can only hope that company never sees her atrocious curtsy. Mrs. Temminnick is desperate for her daughter to become a proper lady. So she enrolls Sophronia in Mademoiselle Geraldine's Finishing Academy for Young Ladies of Quality.

But Sophronia soon realizes the school is not quite what her mother might have hoped. At Mademoiselle Geraldine's, young ladies learn to finish...everything. Certainly, they learn the fine arts of dance, dress, and etiquette, but they also learn to deal out death, diversion, and espionage--in the politest possible ways, of course. Sophronia and her friends are in for a rousing first year's education.

Does one need four fully grown foxgloves for decorating a dinner table for six guests? Or is it six foxgloves to kill four fully grown guests?

Sophronia's first year at Mademoiselle Geraldine's Finishing Academy for Young Ladies of Quality has certainly been rousing! For one thing, finishing school is training her to be a spy--won't Mumsy be surprised? Furthermore, Sophronia got mixed up in an intrigue over a stolen device and had a cheese pie thrown at her in a most horrid display of poor manners.

Now, as she sneaks around the dirigible school, eavesdropping on the teachers' quarters and making clandestine climbs to the ship's boiler room, she learns that there may be more to a field trip to London than is apparent at first. A conspiracy is afoot--one with dire implications for both supernaturals and humans. Sophronia must rely on her training to discover who is behind the dangerous plot-and survive the London Season with a full dance card.

In this sequel to New York Times bestselling Etiquette & Espionage, class is back in session with more petticoats and poison, tea trays and treason. Gail's distinctive voice, signature humor, and lush steampunk setting are sure to be the height of fashion this season.

Review: Take It Like A Vamp

Author Candace Havens
Format e-book
Print Length 282 pages
Publisher Entangled Publishing
Published July 21, 2012

Vampire Nick Christos might've been born in the Middle Ages, but the good old days seem tame compared to the last eight years he's spent ruling the Supernatural Council. His only respite is with his cute neighbor Casey Meyers, a woman he wants more than any undead man should. Sure, he's forced to take a cold shower after every encounter, but there's no way he'll test his own strength by getting too close to a human, and he's not willing to risk her life—not with bloodthirsty family on the prowl out to ruin Nick's life.

When said Nick's kin shows up, the innocent Casey is caught in the middle of a centuries old fight, and Nick's biggest fear is realized. Now, instead of keeping his hands off his neighbor, he'll risk everything to save the human he's come to love.

My Opinion

If you are looking for a light hearted read pick this one up.

Nick and Casey are the best of friends. Just friends. Although it is getting harder and harder for Casey to watch Nick out on a date with an stick figure blonde or brunette or red head. Nick doesn’t discriminate as long as the gal is a stick. Which is why, although Casey is attracted to Nick she knows just knows he cannot be attracted to her. Nick is having just as hard of a time with Casey dating well… losers. After the last guy hurt Casey – he has decided that he must do something to change her choices in men. So, he has an event to go to without a date. Why not ask Casey? Since he is rich he can pay for a make-over. Let’s be real what gal in this world will turn down a make-over?

Nick didn’t think this one threw though y’all. Cause seriously…let’s take the gal you secretly lust over nightly and vamp up her look with a make-over. Including a sexy one of the kind dress. What kinda reaction did he think he would have? Cause Alpha male marking his territory would come to mind if it were me. Nick didn’t think that far and so once he introduces Casey to his world (even slightly) he kinda invites danger into her life. This of course brings out the protective side of Nick amping up his desirability.

Casey and Nick are a fun couple to spend time with. They bicker, they tease but at the end of the day there is a lot of love between them. If they would only admit it. Nick’s world is dangerous so I understand that he is trying to protect Casey. It is her choice though, and in the end he may not get to make it for her. The danger had come out to play, using Casey as the ball.

Take it like a Vamp is a sweet fun loving read. It is a great read for those who hate the insta-love trend. The characters friendship is established long before anything happens. It is that friendship that makes their choices more believable. So curl up on the couch with a glass of sweet tea and this book if you got a few hours.

My Rating 4 out of 5 stars.

Waiting on Wednesday (37) Unspoken

Hey y'all, thanks so much for stopping by my WoW!

Waiting On Wednesday is a weekly meme, hosted by Jill atBreaking the Spine which spotlights upcoming releases that we're eagerly anticipating.

Despite her superhuman strength and enhanced senses, Della Tsang's life as a vampire certainly hasn't been easy. Especially since she was reborn and bound to the mysterious, infuriating, and gorgeous Chase Tallman.

But if there's one thing that's always kept Della going, it's her dream of being an elite paranormal
investigator. Her newest case is the opportunity she's been waiting for, but as Della tries to solve the twenty year old murder and clear her father's name. She uncovers secrets about the vampire council. And about Chase.

Feeling betrayed by all the secrets he's kept hidden from her, Della is determined to keep him as far away from her heart as she can. But she'll need his help to solve the case that will lead them into the darkest and ugliest vampire gangs in town and into the scariest reaches of her heart.

Why am I waiting?

This is the third and final book in the series Shadow Falls After Dark. I am literally on the edge of my seat dying to know who Della picks- Steve or Chase. I am firmly on Team Steve, so hopefully she will pick who I want her to. If not I am hoping that there is a darn good reason for it.

Review: The Wolf Within

Author Cynthia Eden
Format e-Book
Print Length 278 pages
Publisher Curtis Brown Digital
Published November 15, 2012

FBI Special Agent Duncan McGuire spends his days–and his nights–tracking real-life monsters. Most humans aren’t aware of the vampires and werewolves that walk among them. They don’t realize the danger that they face, but Duncan knows about the horror that waits in the darkness. He hunts the monsters, and he protects the innocent. Duncan just never expects to become a monster. But after a brutal werewolf attack, Duncan begins to change…and soon he will be one of the very beasts that he has hunted.

Dr. Holly Young is supposed to help Duncan during his transition. It’s her job to keep him sane so that Duncan can continue working with the FBI’s Para Unit. But as Duncan’s beast grows stronger, the passion that she and Duncan have held carefully in check pushes to the surface. The desire that is raging between them could be a very dangerous thing…because Holly isn’t exactly human, not any longer.

As the monsters circle in, determined to take out all of the agents working at the Para Unit, Holly and Duncan will have to use their own supernatural strengths in order to survive. But as they give up more of their humanity and embrace the beasts within them both, they realize that the passion between them isn’t safe, it isn’t controllable, and their dark need may just be an obsession that could destroy them both.

Author’s Note: THE WOLF WITHIN is an adult paranormal romance. It contains werewolves, vampires, adult language, sexy times, and lots of danger. Please consider yourself warned. THE WOLF WITHIN contains approximately 60,000 words.

My Opinion

Sometimes monsters are real, sometimes they kill. Sometimes someone human has to stop them. Duncan is one of those humans- a member of an elite FBI team. One who tracks then stops monsters. That is until he is turned into one. Before Duncan gets attacked by a werewolf he was attracted to Dr. Holly Young. After he gets attack that attraction turns into something more, a heck of a lot more.

When Duncan is turned it is discovered that he is an alpha- the current alpha in the city doesn’t want to share and so sends his minions to attack Duncan. Since Duncan was on the compound grounds at the time Holly got attacked as well. Then they discover they have to break into the special Paranormal Prison to get to the old alpha and discover who is trying to hurt their unit.  When they find out who the Alpha is- there are decisions that need to be made.

There just seemed like there was something missing with this one- maybe it was the tension between Duncan and Holly. There really wasn’t any. I tend to like the chase- the boy meets girl, girl pushes boy away, boy chases gal for a while, gal finally gives in and gives it a try. (or vice versa) There was none of that in this book. It was oh I’ve always been secretly attracted to you but now that I have gotten bitten I am all about jumping your bones.

This one just wasn’t for me but there are others who loved it.

Review: The Mane Event

Author Shelly Laurenston
Format e-book
Print Length 391 pages
Publisher Brava
Published September 25, 2005

One of the hottest new voices in paranormal romance, Shelly Laurenston knows how to do it all, delivering tales that are wickedly funny, action-packed, and scorch-your-fingers sexy. With The Mane Event, she proves just how delicious love can be once you unleash your inner beast...

Christmas Pride

How come all the good-looking ones are insane?
That's what runs through NYPD cop Desiree "Dez" MacDermot's mind the minute she hooks up again with her childhood buddy, Mace Llewellyn. It isn't just the way he stares at her with those too-sexy gold eyes―as if he could devour her on the spot. Or the six-four, built-like-a-Navy Seal bod-o-death. It isn't even that he sniffs her neck and purrs, making her entire body tingle. It's more about that disconcerting, shifting-from-man-to-lion thing that unhinges her...and makes her want more.

Mace likes making Dez crazy. In fact, he likes her any way he can get her―in bed, on the desk, here, now, again. Together, they'd always been trouble, but Dez has no idea just how good trouble can feel...

Shaw's Tail

Brendon Shaw, hotel owner and lion shifter, has seen better days. He's been beaten, had a gun to the back of his head, and had to be rescued by a Pack of shape-shifting wolves. He didn't think he'd survive the night, much less find the woman of his dreams. And he never thought the woman of his dreams would have a Tennessee accent and wear cowboy boots. Once he sets his sights on her, the predator in him is ready to pounce and never let go.

Ronnie Lee Reed is ready to change her life, and New York City is the place where any girl―even one who runs with a Pack―can redefine herself. First order of business: find a mate, settle down, and stop using men for sex. Even big, gorgeous, lion-shifting, oh-my-what-big-um-paws-you-have men. Then again...

My Opinion

The Mane Event is the first book in a new shifter series. The great thing about this one is that it is two books in one. Which means of course two reviews for the price of one!

Christmas Pride

Mace is a shifter- a lion shifter. His pride (Llewellyn Pride) is ruled by his older sister. In this series the males are used as breeding tools, literally they are sold out of their pride for purposes of breeding. Mace didn’t want to be used by his sisters so instead he enlisted into the Navy. His ten years are up and when he comes home he finds a beautiful detective (Dez) waiting in his sister’s study. He is instantly attracted to her, which makes sense she has haunted his dreams for the last ten years. Too bad she is investigating a murder.

Mace and Dex grew up together- that is until she moved away. While she was attracted to him growing up she was warned away by his sisters. She moved on, got married, got divorced and got promoted to detective. Nothing in the world would make her happier than to arrest Mace’s sister. Mace is an added complication that she does not need.

Dez is a strong independent woman. She pushes Mace away but at the same time there maybe something here. Mace for his part knows what he wants. He is not afraid to fight for it. She is all that he has ever wanted.

Shaw’s Tail

At the end of Christmas Pride Dez accidently rescues Brendon Shaw, another lion shifter. He happens to be a breeding male for the Llewellyn Pride. He has mated twice with one of Mace’s sisters and has created two beautiful children. Of course, he did have an ironclad contract so that Mace’s older sister did not cheat him of his time with his children. Ronnie Lee is watching over Shaw while he is in the hospital. It is only right no one wants to be alone for the holidays and everyone else in the Pride has family in town. Ronnie Lee is part of the Smith Pack (wolves) their alpha is Mace’s bestie. While in the hospital Shaw catches a healing fever, this tends to make a person very ummm…friendly. He tries to get friendly with Ronnie Lee but she is having none of that. Then two guys show up to hurt him. Ronnie Lee helps him escape to her aunt’s house. Shaw in the mist of the healing fever is well amusing as all get out.

Ronnie Lee is hilarious and her reactions to Shaw will keep you laughing through-out the book. I did get a little annoyed with them always referring to someone as Hoss. I didn’t get it, I mean they are from Tennessee. But having lived in south Georgia my whole life, Hoss is not a term of endearment that we use.

Overall The Mane Event was an enjoyable read. There were a lot of “alone time” or “adult time” with the main characters. It could get to be too much, just start skipping pages.

My Rating 3 out of 5 stars

Stuck in A good Book Giveaway Hop

Sometimes you get stuck in a good book. You end up reading that book over and over again. Waiting for the next book in the series to be published. Sure you move on to another series but ultimately you go back to the one you got stuck in. Maybe it was the world building, the strong characters or how even when it gets tough they still push through. I recently got stuck in a book- read it over and over again until the second one came out. Then I re-read that one as well. Then I moved on the the other series that the author has published. The waiting may kill be but oh what a way to go!

There are supernatural prisons hidden across the globe. Contained within these fortresses are some of the deadliest criminals from the five supernatural races: vampire, shifter, fey, magic users and demi-fey.

Book Saturday (26) Endgame

Some people believe you can fall in love at first sight. When it comes to books I believe those people. Book trailers are an excellent way to fall in love at first sight. I hope to feature a book trailer here every Saturday to help you fall in love at first sight...

Twelve thousand years ago, they came. They descended from the sky amid smoke and fire, and created humanity and gave us rules to live by. They needed gold and they built our earliest civilizations to mine it for them. When they had what they needed, they left. But before they left, they told us someday they would come back, and when they did, a game would be played. A game that would determine our future.

This is Endgame.

For ten thousand years the lines have existed in secret. The 12 original lines of humanity. Each had to have a Player prepared at all times. They have trained generation after generation after generation. In weapons, languages, history, tactics, disguise assassination. Together the players are everything: strong, kind, ruthless, loyal, smart, stupid, ugly, lustful, mean, fickle, beautiful, calculating, lazy, exuberant, weak. They are good and evil. Like you. Like all.

This is Endgame.

When the game starts, the players will have to find three keys. The keys are somewhere on earth. The only rule of their Endgame is that there are no rules. Whoever finds the keys first wins the game. Endgame: The Calling is about the hunt for the first key. And just as it tells the story of the hunt for a hidden key, written into the book is a puzzle. It invites readers to play their own Endgame and to try to solve the puzzle. Whoever does will open a case filled with gold. Alongside the puzzle will be a revolutionary mobile game built by Google’s Niantic Labs that will allow you to play a real-world version of Endgame where you can join one of the lines and do battle with people around you.

Will exuberance beat strength? Stupidity top kindness? Laziness thwart beauty? Will the winner be good or evil? There is only one way to find out.

People of Earth.
Endgame has begun.

Review: Wrong Bed Right Guy

Author Katee Robert
Format e-book
Print Length 144 pages
Publisher Entangled Publishing, LLC (Brazen)
Published July 20, 2012

A sexy category romance from Entangled's Brazen imprint...

Seducing Mr. Wrong never felt so right...

Prim and proper art gallery coordinator Elle Walser is no good at seducing men. Heck, she’s been throwing hints at her boss for months, but he’s completely clueless. Desperate to escape her mother’s matchmaking efforts, she comes up with a plan—buy some lingerie and climb into her boss’s bed. The plan goes brilliantly…until she accidentally seduces a sexy stranger instead.

Bad boy nightclub mogul Gabe Schultz just had the best almost-sex of his life. Too bad the smoking hot blonde thought he was his brother and bolted before he could finish what they started. Though her holier-than-thou attitude puts a serious damper his mood, Gabe’s never been one to give up on something he wants. And he wants Elle. But does a man who lives on the dark side really have a chance with a proper lady?

My Opinion

Elle has only had one relationship- a relationship that ended very badly, very publicly with her big brother in trouble. Her momma is nagging her to get married and give her grandbabies- gotta love momma’s like that (they make for great books). Elle doesn’t trust her taste in men, so she decides to take life by the lingerie and climb into bed with her boss. He is safe, stable and really she isn’t that attracted to him so he has to be good guy. She tiptoes up the stairs to his loft and climbs into the bed up there. Holy smokes! Does this guy know how to kiss! Holy smokes…. is she responding to him! Holy smokes- he is not her boss! She does what any sensible young lady would do in this crazy situation- run!

Gabe is her boss’ brother and he decides that he wants to see where this spark takes him. After all chemistry like this does not come along very often. He talks Nate into helping him out with tidbits about Elle. Truth be told though Nate doesn’t know that much about her, except that she is really good at what she does.

Gabe and Elle couldn’t be more missed matched, and yet rooting for Gabe was natural. Elle was so prim and proper- Gabe so not. Elle tries to maintain a distance between them-Gabe overcomes it. Elle gets her feelings hurt- Gabe finds a way to fix it. Gabe gets her to do things that she never would have done before. There were times when I did not think that Elle deserved Gabe. I mean talk about a guy willing to go the distance. I get that she was burned before but come one already- one bad apple doesn’t mean you should never bite into another one.

Wrong Bed, Right Guy is an entertaining read. Elle and Gabe make an unlikely pair but I enjoyed how he dealt with her. I especially love his reaction to her parents- I won’t tell you more expect you should read this book if you want to laugh out loud, cringe and sigh a few times.

My Rating 3 out of 5 stars

Review: No Kissing Allowed

Author Melissa West
Format e-book
Print Length 250 pages
Publisher Entangled Embrace
Published July 28, 2015

No kissing. No touching. And definitely no falling in love...

Armed with her besties, an embarrassing number of shots, and her list of 10 Wild Things To Do Before Adulthood, recent grad Cameron Lawson is partying it up before she starts her dream job at New York's biggest ad agency. Her last task? Hook up with a random guy. And while it's so not her style, the super-sexy guy sitting next to her is definitely game. No names. No details.

At least, that was the plan.

On her first day of work, Cameron discovers her hook-up is none other than Aidan Truitt—her new boss's boss. Talk about failing the “no fraternizing with coworkers” policy on an epic level. Especially when Aidan makes it clear their one night was only the beginning. Falling for him could cost her everything, but sometimes the only way to get what you want is by breaking a few rules...

My Opinion

Another list book! Y’all should know by now how much I love list books. Cameron makes a list of 10 things she wants to do before she is officially an adult- with an adult job and adult bills to pay. Lauren and Grace, her besties, add one more to her list making it an uneven 11. The item…have a one night stand. So yeah… Cameron is not really into one night stands, she is more of a relationship kinda gal. There is this guy though, at the bar and one thing leads to another. Thinking she will never see him again she goes about her weekend, getting ready to start her first grown-up job. Too bad one night stand guy is her boss’ boss. Yikes!

Cameron is a character that you will just instantly love! She is adorably sweet, with her head on straight. Yeah, Aidan throws her off balance every now and then. She doesn’t hid it though, instead she owns it. She is confident in her ability to do her job regardless of her relationship or lack there of with Aidan. There were a few times that I wanted to take her aside and tell her I thought something or someone was bad for her. She had to make her own mistakes though- that is kinda what being a grown-up is all about.

Aidan took a little longer for me to warm-up to, commitment phobia guys usually do though. He constantly tells Cameron he doesn’t date, yet he acts like he is dating her. Talk about mixed signals. Once he gets into the game though he goes whole heartedly. Trust me when I say at that point in the book there is no escaping falling in love with him yourself.

No Kissing Allowed is a sweet romance. The kinda read that you would take to the beach and savor with the sounds of the ocean in the background. Or the book you pull out when it is raining outside and you just want to snuggle on the couch.

My Rating 4 out of 5 stars

Review: Chase the Darkness

Author J.D. Tyler
Format e-book
Print Length 352 pages
Publisher Signet
Published August 4, 2015

The author of Wolf’s Fall returns with her “hot and to die for”* Alpha Pack—a top-secret band of Navy SEALs with Psy powers and shifter prowess whose dangerous missions sometimes require a more intimate call to duty…

Believed dead by his Pack mates, Micah Chase, a wolf shifter and Dreamwalker, was held captive for months, subject to tortures that left him physically scarred and emotionally unsettled.

Now under the care of the Alpha Pack’s doctors, he’s been prescribed an experimental healing drug, but he still can’t shake the nightmares. Even more damning is that Micah’s problems pose a danger to his team, and if he doesn’t get himself under control, they’ll all suffer a terrible fate.

There is a key to his salvation. Jacee is a beautiful coyote shifter, and though her kind is hated, she’s falling in love with a man whose very future is in her hands. Together they’ll face his personal demons as well as a deadly enemy—and for both of them desire has never come with such risk.

*Dark Faerie Tales

My Opinion

Micah was presumed dead, instead he was being held captive by mad scientist. Mad scientists who would stop at nothing to get what they wanted. The only way Micah could get the torture to stop was by doing the things that were asked of him. He fought them, he fought them with everything he had but at times he gave in to them. Since being rescued he has been haunted by the things he did in captivity. The doctors developed a drug, one that was supposed to help him keep the nightmares at bay. Instead, he now has another problem to add to the long list of his problems.

One night while out with his team at the local bar, he interferes when regulars get a little rough with a waitress, Jacee. This waitress just so happens to be a coyote shifter and Micah’s mate. They recognize the connect right away but know that there are obstacles in their way. Micah’s stuff, the fact that Jacee had previously been involved with another Alpha pack member and finding out what the newest threat to the world wants does make it difficult to be together.

Micah is the kinda character that you want to cheer for but you tend to not have a lot of faith on his follow through. I worried that he made promises he couldn’t keep. I loved how loyal he was to Jacee since she is his mate. I stressed over his health and his choices. I got angry when he let Jacee and his team down. Ultimately though, I hoped he would get the happily ever after that he needed.

Jacee was a fun character to spend time with. Her lot in life has been hard, often times not worth it. She is always true to herself though. She knows that there is something wrong with Micah but doesn’t know what. She is a spitfire when it comes to him. She doesn’t allow him to get away with anything and I like that about her.

Chase the Darkness is a nice addition to the series. It moves the series along; it’s just that… well… I felt like it was missing something. I know I had high expectations for this story; I have been waiting on Micah’s story since I meet Rowan.

My Rating 3 out of 5 stars.

Review: Stolen and Forgiven

Stolen

The first rule of being Alpha of the Canine Pack is to protect their secrets from the humans at all cost. One look at the dying human at his doorstep and Holden Carter knows he will have to break it. The broken woman with no hope at survival is his mate. When he forces the change on her to save her life, he not only sets forth motions that could risk both their lives, but the lives of every shifter in the world.

Ariel Sands grew up in a post-Verona infection world and under the care of the very humans she thought had cured the disease. When they betray her in the worst ways imaginable, she finds herself not only mated to the Alpha of a the very species she’s been taught to fear, but the focal point of a traitor and path to destruction for everyone’s way of life. It will take more than trust and a mating bond for Ariel and Holden to not only survive their enemies, but the burn of their own temptations.

Forgiven

Soren Slater is a Beta wolf who understands that duty to his Pack comes before his own needs. At a young age he takes a position as a liaison between his Pack and the other species of shifters. He never expected his enticing flirtations with Cora Wilder, a Tiger Princess, would encourage her cat to consider him a potential mate. He’s forced to walk away, choosing a partner among the wolves to try and strengthen his Pack.

Cora has no intention of forgiving or forgetting Soren’s rejection. Not even when the Packs are forced to live together and she discovers Soren’s former mate has died. But then, she’s kidnapped by the SAU and she has no choice but to work with Soren to escape. Together they must put the past behind them if they’re to survive the human’s evil plot.

My Opinion

I am going to do something a little different- yes two authors are involved here and yes there are two novellas. Logic would dictate that one reviews them individually but it makes more sense to review them as a whole. Mainly because you are introduced to the two main male characters right off the bat. Holden the Alpha of the Canine Pack and his best friend Soren the Beta. There was once a virus that was killing off humans, the shifters came out of the dark to help the humans find a cure. Their payment for their help was incarceration. For the last twenty-five years they have lived on a compound, collared and caged. To make matters worse once a year the Alpha of the pack has to brand the children with a hot iron. So collared, caged and branded for all to recognize.

Holden is suppose to take a mate- but he and his wolf haven’t found her yet. It is his duty as the Alpha to do this. Since he can’t Soren does, even though he does not love the woman that he is mated to. Instead he loves Cora, loves her and leaves her for the good of the pack. Hopefully to never see her again. Since Soren’s mate has passed there has been more pressure on Holden to mate. He goes out of a nightly run to get rid of stress and comes upon a corpse- or what will soon be a corpse. His wolf and he decide as one to turn this woman, because she is his mate. Ariel wakes up to find that she is very much alive thanks to a hunky man who bit her.

She is thrust into a world that she has no clue about. After all she was a human and what the government told the humans about the shifters would make you shiver in your boots. I adore Ariel- she takes everything as if it was no surprise. She steps up and helps the Pack. She does not back down. She instantly feels a connection to Holden but hello he did save her life. She is met with a lot of resistance. Someone will betray the Pack and that is where Cora comes in.

The betrayal of the Pack leads to the government forcing another shifter pack to move in with the wolves ironically a cat pack. Ummm great strategy as we all know that cats and dogs fight a lot. The government is kinda banking on it. Cora’s daddy happens to the Alpha of the Golden Pack. She is also the woman that Soren cast aside for the good of his Pack. Now that his wolf mate is dead he understands that mating for the sake of the Pack was a bad idea. Cora is now back in his sights and well to be honest she never left his heart. He just has to make her see that what he did was not as awful as it sounds.

Cora at times comes across as a spoiled brat- yes, she can have any cat she wanted. Yes is the Alpha’s daughter- but come on and forgive a wolf already. She drags out the forgiveness part of this relationship a little too long. Especially when faced with a common enemy, SAU (Shifter Accommodation Unit).

Stolen and Forgiven was an entertaining read. As the first book in a new series there was a lot of world building. Since mated pairs are fated there is instant-lust here, but for the sake of the storyline it is doable. I am looking forward to reading the next book in the series- it comes out Sept. 15.

My Rating 3 out of 5 stars

Review: The Body Institute

Author Carol Riggs
Format e-ARC
Print Length ?
Publisher Entangled: Teen
Published September 1, 2015

Meet Morgan Dey, one of the top teen Reducers at The Body Institute.

Thanks to cutting-edge technology, Morgan can temporarily take over another girl’s body, get her in shape, and then return to her own body—leaving her client slimmer, more toned, and feeling great. Only there are a few catches…

For one, Morgan won’t remember what happens in her “Loaner” body. Once she’s done, she won’t recall walks with her new friend Matt, conversations with the super-cute Reducer she’s been text-flirting with, or the uneasy feeling she has that the director of The Body Institute is hiding something. Still, it’s all worth it in the name of science. Until the glitches start…

Suddenly, residual memories from her Loaner are cropping up in Morgan’s mind. She’s feeling less like herself and more like someone else. And when protests from an anti–Body Institute organization threaten her safety, she’ll have to decide if being a Reducer is worth the cost of her body and soul…

My Opinion

Thank you to Net Galley and the Publisher for my copy of this book!

Intriguing, thought provoking read! If you are looking for a book where the MC grows and becomes a totally new person look no longer. The Body Institute does that and more. A book that you go into thinking a new fun light read, you come out of with questions galore- questions about our own lives.

Morgan is a high school student whose family is in debt, a lot of debt due to the new federal health regulations. So to help pay the bills she volunteers to be a reducer. Someone who’s real body is put in suspended animation while her personality “aka soul” is downloaded into another body. Once there she does all that she can to get the person to a healthy body weight.

Morgan lives in a world where government regulations make it difficult to live the life you want to live. People who are overweight are taxed into smaller bodies- the taxes are progressive. If you partake in any type of activity that is considered unhealthy there is a tax. Not only that but if you refuse to sign up for health care there is a tax. Pretty much the government is banking the big bucks with all of these taxes.

There are those who protest the use of a reducer to lose weight. They protest the morality of it, they protest the need for it. As her job moves on through the pounds she has to help her host lose, Morgan begins to start seeing things in a new light.

Questions pop up though- what happens to her body while she is in the other one. Could she physically and mindful die? If she mindfully dies does someone else get her body? If she physically dies does she get to have a new body- any body at all? Is this job as safe as they are claiming it to be? Does she truly knows what they are doing with her body when her mind is in the host?

This book will seriously have you examining our way of life. Society’s treatment of overweight people, mass media’s influence on us and of course the role of government are get looked at through a different lenses.

I enjoyed this book more than I thought I would. I was worried going into it that there would be some fat shaming- there is. The placement of the fat shaming is for the progression of the story and the growth of the main character. It is artfully done, with an intended purpose.

The Body Institute makes you think, makes you wonder and thoroughly entertains you at the same time.

My Rating 4 out of 5 stars
