Character Interview: Trish from Along Came A Spider

Author: Kate SeRine
Publisher: Kensington Books
Published: August 1, 2013

Along came a spider…

When Trish Muffet is attacked at a grisly crime scene, the last person she expects to come to her rescue is Nicky “Little Boy” Blue. But since walking away from everything two years before, Nicky’s been doling out vigilante justice as “The Spider,” taking on the vicious predators of the night in hopes it’ll lead him to his ultimate target – Vlad Dracula. And he needs Trish’s help.

Although Nicky’s renegade style goes against everything Trish stands for, she’ll do what she must to bring Dracula down. With danger stalking her, Trish knows the only person she can count on is the one man who has the power to leave her breathless. There’s no way she’s letting this spider frighten her away…

I am extremely excited today. Trish from the Transplanted Series is about to be at my house. When I picture Trish in my head I see a Skylar Samuels look alike.  I mean seriously, Trish! I must stay calm. I must not go fan girl... my heart is beating 90 to nothing right now. Get it together. Deep breaths, in and out. One more time. There it is- her car, do not jump up and down. That would be embarrassing.

Trish OMG you are finally here! I am so excited that you were able to stop by on your way to your next case. Especially, since I am kinda far away from your office and all. Can I get you anything? Maybe some sweet tea? Sugar cookies? Red Velvet Cake?

Trish: (Smiling) My pleasure. And if you have any coffee, that’d be great. I know, I know—it’s probably 100 degrees outside or something. But my coffee habit is almost as bad as Red’s. Oh, but wait! Sweet tea. That stuff is awesome! I had some at Mama Hubbard’s when I was staying at The Refuge with Lavender and Seth for a while, but it’s hard to get decent sweet tea in Chicago.

I just have a few questions to ask, rather simple really. Nothing too personal, I mean you are in the Deep South now. That means well, there is nothing too personal down here. We are all family right?

Trish: (Chuckling as she sips her sweet tea) Absolutely! I feel like I’ve known you for ages! I mean, you’ve been such a great friend to us Tales. Go ahead and fire away.

Tess Little aka Red is your bestie. Was it difficult to see her with the man you were crushing on? And what a crush that was- how long has it lasted?

Trish: Oh, wow. You’re getting right into it. Yeah, it was tough. I mean, when Red and Nicky were dating it was way back in the day—the 1920s and 30s, on and off. Back then, Red and I were friendly, but we weren’t really friends yet, so it was definitely hard. I tried to keep my mind on other thing, date other guys. But… Well, most of them were good guys (with one recent, obvious exception), but they all had a common flaw. They weren’t Nicky. I mean, I fell for him the very first time I saw him when we came over from Make Believe, which was around one hundred fifty years ago. I knew then there’d really never be anyone else for me. I could pretend, go through the motions, but he was the one, you know?

You know honey, with your talent, umm how to put this delicately….Dating must have been really hard. How did you overcome the drawback of how special you are?

Trish: Fortunately, most of the time I don’t get a reading off the living that easily. Ordinaries and Tales alike are always on their guard, trying to hide their thoughts and feelings as a general rule. It’s rare that someone lets me in. But it does complicate dating because who are you most likely to you let your guard down with if not the person you’re attracted to, maybe even in love with? I’ve found out some really nasty truths about people in those kinds of situations. For that reason, I tend to avoid looking anyone in the eyes for too long.

Now, I know that you are crushing pretty hard on Nicky, BUT… Gideon was completely there for you in Along Came A Spider. Are you sure that Nicky is the one for you?

Trish: (laughs) Ahh, Gideon. He’s an incredible guy and has become a really good friend to both Nicky and me. If I’d never met Nicky…well, who knows? But, no, it’s always been Nicky and always will be. That man has a hold on my heart that can’t be shaken.

So, do you think Gideon will ever find that special someone? He had his heart broken pretty badly once upon a time, but it doesn’t sound like he’s been living like a monk or anything.

Trish: (wags her finger at me) Oh, no… You won’t get that out of me. Sorry—no spoilers! I’ll let Gideon tell his own story when the time’s right.

So, back to Nicky. How are things going with the big guy anyway? I mean, you two went through some intense stuff in Along Came A Spider.

Trish: (flushing with happiness) Amazing! I honestly never imagined that I could be so happy. And I love him more and more each day. I knew he had a generous, loving soul when I looked into his eyes on that first day in the Here and Now, but I didn’t realize the true depth of his kindness and loyalty until we came together while hunting down Dracula. And, yeah, we went through some really crazy stuff together—life and death situations together—but I think our relationship is stronger for it. After facing down vampires, phantoms, and dickhead government agents, marriage is a piece of cake. I’ve never felt so loved and adored.

Trish, I know that you are super busy with work and Nicky. Thanks so much for taking the time to stop by. Anytime you are in the neighborhood, my house is your house.

Trish: Thanks so much for having me by for a visit, Angela! I’d certainly much rather sit here chatting with you than go work on the case down in New Orleans. Next time I’m down south, I’ll make sure to bring Nicky with me. I’m sure he’d love to meet you! And make sure you give us a call if you’re up in the Windy City.

OMG!  That was the best thing ever!  I mean she was here... at my house.  WOW!

Waiting on Wednesday (17) The Liberator

Hey y'all, thanks so much for stopping by my WoW!

Waiting On Wednesday is a weekly meme, hosted by Jill at Breaking the Spine which spotlights upcoming releases that we're eagerly anticipating.

Bad boy, meet bad girl.

Dante has a shiny new cuff wrapped around his ankle, and he doesn't like that mess one bit. His new accessory comes straight from Big Guy himself and marks the former demon as a liberator. Despite his gritty past and bad boy ways, Dante Walker has been granted a second chance.

When Dante is given his first mission as a liberator to save the soul of seventeen-year-old Aspen, he knows he’s got this. But Aspen reminds him of the rebellious life he used to live and is making it difficult to resist sinful temptations. Though Dante is committed to living clean for his girlfriend Charlie, this dude’s been a playboy for far too long…and old demons die hard.

With Charlie becoming the girl she was never able to be pre-makeover and Aspen showing him how delicious it feels to embrace his inner beast, Dante will have to go somewhere he never thought he’d return to in order to accomplish the impossible: save the girl he’s been assigned to, and keep the girl he loves.

The first book was interesting.  I did not fall for Dante like a lot of readers did but I did like him.  Charlie was a sweet girl and I am hoping they end up together.

Review: Midnight Frost

Author: Jennifer Estep
Format: eARC
Print Length: 400
Publisher: K-Teen
Published: July 30, 2013

Here we go again …

Just when it seems life at Mythos Academy can’t get any more dangerous, the Reapers of Chaos manage to prove me wrong. It was just a typical night at the Library of Antiquities — until a Reaper tried to poison me. The good news is I’m still alive and kicking. The bad news is the Reaper poisoned someone else instead.

As Nike’s Champion, everyone expects me to lead the charge against the Reapers, even though I’m still hurting over what happened with Spartan warrior Logan Quinn. I’ve got to get my hands on the antidote fast — otherwise, an innocent person will die. But the only known cure is hidden in some creepy ruins — and the Reapers are sure to be waiting for me there …

My Opinion

I received an eARC through the publishers, this in no way influenced my review.

There are spoilers from Crimson Frost in this review. Please stop reading if you have not read Crimson Frost, the review may be hazardous to your health.

When I got the eARC for Midnight Frost, I was in heaven literally. It felt like Nike had smiled down upon me and handed me one of those artifacts that Gwen is supposed to find. My only fear was that it would not live up to its predecessor. Silly fear, one that after the first chapter was no longer a worry in my head..

Midnight Frost picks up a few weeks after the events of Crimson Frost. Gwen is (well to borrow a word from Vic) moping about Logan’s sudden departure and she has been having nightmares concerning the events that caused him to go. The Reapers wait for no moping champion and instead make another attempt on her life. Someone close to her falls ill and she must travel to a dangerous area to get the cure. Daphne, Carson, Oliver, Alexei and Coach Ajax take on this challenge with Gwen.

Reapers attack Gwen left and right, seriously even on the train to their destination. Thankfully though Rory, Gwen’s cousin is on the train to help save her. Although, Rory has a skewed opinion of Gwen. I like that this is an added element to Gwen’s life and personality. Rory adds some comic relief that had been missing due to Logan’s departure.

Gwen wants to mope, needs to mope but you know what is the best thing about Gwen? Regardless of how bad her life sucks and she needs ice cream therapy. She always, always puts her big girl pants on and preservers. The Reaper attacks are fierce in this book. Action packed from the beginning to the end.

Logan is in this edition, because really what is a Mythos Academy book without him? He is still torn up over what he did to Gwen and to their love. Honestly, though I love how Gwen handles it. She tries to give him space but after about two minutes she tells him to deal. It was perfection.

The thing that I did not enjoy about this edition of the Mythos Academy saga is that there are very little swoony elements. Granted this is due to the circumstances surrounding their relationship. Crimson Frost had a lot of great swoony moments that I felt a little deprived in that retrospect.

Will Logan be able to keep his promise? Will they find the artifacts that they need? Will they preserver over the Reapers? Midnight Frost was a fantastic book that will leave the readers wondering what is next for Gwen and Company.

My Rating 5 out of 5 stars

It’s time to choose sides… On the surface, Sorry-in-the-Vale is a sleepy English town. But Kami Glass knows the truth. Sorry-in-the-Vale is full of magic. In the old days, the Lynburn family ruled with fear, terrifying the people into submission in order to kill for blood and power. Now the Lynburns are back, and Rob Lynburn is gathering sorcerers so that the town can return to the old ways.

But Rob and his followers aren’t the only sorcerers in town. A decision must be made: pay the blood sacrifice, or fight. For Kami, this means more than just choosing between good and evil. With her link to Jared Lynburn severed, she’s now free to love anyone she chooses. But who should that be?’

Why I fell so hard?

The splattered font, the teal coloring.  The Gothic feel of this one did me in.  The way the trees look read to embrace Kami as one of their own.  How alone and scared she seems, with her hands in her pocket.  This is a cover that would have sold me on the book, without me reading the blurb.

Waiting on Wednesday (16) Consume

Hey y'all, thanks so much for stopping by my WoW!

Waiting On Wednesday is a weekly meme, hosted by Jill at Breaking the Spine which spotlights upcoming releases that we're eagerly anticipating.

Tristan Coleman has survived the change from Clann magic user to vampire, much to Savannah Colbert's joy—and despair. By changing the Clann's golden boy and newly elected leader, even to save him from death, she has unleashed a fury of hatred and fear that they cannot escape.

As the Clann and the vampire council go to war, Tristan and Sav face a new threat—a fracturing of the all-consuming bond they share. To fight for peace, they must forge a new trust and risk everything to take down their deadliest enemy, even as they must run for their lives. Soon they will learn that some bonds are stronger than love—and some battles cannot be won without sacrifice.

The first two books in this series were really good.  I am excited to see how it ends.

Breaking News: Transplanted Tales Announcement

Kate SeRine has officially signed on with Kensington to write a novella and at least one more full-length novel.

The novella, GRIMM CONSEQUENCES, is a sequel to RED and is the story of what happens to Nate and Tess a couple of months after the end of the first novel but before events in THE BETTER TO SEE YOU. In books 2 and 3, you might've picked up on references made to tribulations the couple had to endure after the events of RED. Now you get to find out what exactly happened to them to make their love for one another stronger than ever.

GRIMM CONSEQUENCES is tentatively scheduled for publication in February 2014. (FYI - It's a complete story. A full plot arc, no cliffhangers, etc. So really and truly just a short novel.)

Book 4 of the Transplanted Tales series will be Gideon's story! Gideon was in THE BETTER TO SEE YOU and I adored him in ALONG CAME A SPIDER. Publication is tentatively planned for fall 2014.

This is me doing the happy dance! Gideon seriously stole my heart in Along Came a Spider. You should see him in action. HAWT!

To celebrate the new books, Kate decided to hold a giveaway. Three winners will receive an e-book of one of her Transplanted Tales books (winner’s choice). The grand prize winner will receive a signed print copy of RED and some Transplanted Tales swag.

Levi might be hot, strong, and have a cool set of wings, but it's not enough to make up for keeping Allie in the dark.

Allie's tired of being left with more questions than answers. She's tired of loving a guy who refuses to level with her. Most of all, she's tired of her life spinning out of control.

Desperate to save Jess no matter the personal cost, Allie has to face the possibility that the only one she can trust is herself.

Why I fell so hard?

It was the wings, the wings did it for me.  I love that most who judge this book from the cover will assume that Levi is an angel, a dark one at that.  The truth is he is not.  I guess that means that I fell for this cover because it is misleading for those who have not read the series. I love that Levi has a glow to him, the same glow that is found in the title.

Review: Romancing the Bookworm

Author: Kate Evangelista
Format: e-ARC
Print Length: 309 pages
Publisher: Omnific Publishing
Published: July 9, 2013

Sometimes, even the best-laid plans can unravel.

It's spring break, and Tamara Winters would rather stay on campus and read romance novels than flaunt her size-fourteen body on a beach. But her best friend, Ronni, has other ideas. Against her wishes, Tamara is whisked away to picturesque Maverick Bay, where she's wrangled into waiting tables with Ronni at the Shore Shack for its busy week leading to Maverick's Surf Invitational. There she meets fellow schoolmate Xavier Solomon, the Invitational's organizer and campus womanizer by reputation. From the moment Tamara sees him emerging from the waves like a hero in of one of her romance novels, all she wants to do is run away from the feelings he inspires in her.

Little does she know Xavier has been watching her for weeks now. In fact, after failed attempts at asking her out on campus, he's concocted a crazy plan: fabricating romantic situations straight out of her favorite books. Xavier quickly realizes that if Tamara gets a whiff of his designs, he might as well spell CREEPER across his forehead. Yet as they grow closer, he's convinced it's a risk worth taking. What he hasn't planned on, of course, is his drug-addicted, alcoholic stepbrother, who decides to join the fun and put a wrench in Xavier’s scheme.

Spring break is proving hotter than Tamara expected. Will her romance novels be able to compete?

My Thoughts

I received a complimentary Advanced Reader Copy by the publisher in exchange for their honest thoughts/review of the book.

Hilariously funny, over exaggeration of a bookworm and the life she leads. Romancing the bookworm had me giggling throughout the entire book. Maybe due to the fact that I am a bookworm but this was a light-hearted and humorous read.

Tamara turned to books as a since of comfort when her parents passed away. Sadly though, books were becoming her life. So much so that she was no longer living life herself. Just going through the motions until the next book came along. Her only friend recognized this and wanted to help, but how?

Xavier, recognizing a how special Tamara is wants to get to know her better. He makes attempts on campus but she turns him down. Thinking that he was just trying due to Ronni. Little does she know that he really wants to get to know her. She reminds him of a loved one that is no longer here. What is a guy to do but hitch up a plan? A plan that goes awry right from the beginning.

Tamara is a naive character, one who places a shield up whenever she is in public. A shield in the place of a book. The things that she says are amazingly funny- she has no mind mouth filter. Although, she is not mean about it. She truly does not see what Xavier could see in her, and is astonished by his attention. But she writes it off as a Spring Break Fling. If she only knew.

Xavier for his part has good intentions. Although, doesn’t he know that the road to hell was paved with good intentions. Everything he plans, comes out wrong. Somehow though, he was confident that it would all work out in the end.

Ronni and Hudson are great best friends to our dynamic duo. The role of the villain was given to Xavier’s stepbrother. Although, he is not as evil as you would think. More misguided than anything.

If you are looking for a fast read that will entertain you, than I highly recommend Romancing the Bookworm.

My Rating 4 stars out of 5 stars

Favorite Quote “But I don’t need a real man.” I lifted the book on my lap.

Release Day Launch for FOUND by Alyssa Rose Ivy

My Thoughts
This is one of those series, where you actually witness the growth of the author as you read. Flight, the first book in the series, was good. Focus, the second book was really good. Found was even better. Outshining the previous two books, Found is causing me to look forward to her next Pteron series.

Levi is pretty amazing in this book. He is loving, passionate, and understanding. There were plenty of times that I wanted to shake Allie. Maybe even ask her if she was hit with a silly stick or two. But Levi was well supportive- even when he did not know the plan.

Jess must have been a great friend in Allie’s previous life. But in her Pteron filled life, she has well in my opinion sucked. So why is Allie so hell bent on saving her? This is only area of the book that I disagreed with. Jess just was not worth saving in my opinion.

Allie finds out a lot about herself in this book. Some of which is really interesting. I loved this aspect of the story. I cannot go into detail, but Levi’s granny (totally called something else in the book) is a hoot. I loved how everything was interconnected in this book with the previous two.

Found is a prefect conclusion to this series.

My Rating 4 stars out of 5 stars

Favorite Quote “New goal of the night- spend all of it making sure you never question my feelings for you again.”

Other Characters

Hailey- Allie’s Pteron best friend.
Jared- one of Levi’s best friends, head of security.
Owen- one of Levi’s best friends, you don’t see him much in this one.
Cade- another Pteron prince trying to get Allie’s love.

FOUND Synopsis:

Levi might be hot, strong, and have a cool set of wings, but it's not enough to make up for keeping Allie in the dark.

Allie's tired of being left with more questions than answers. She's tired of loving a guy who refuses to level with her. Most of all, she's tired of her life spinning out of control.

Desperate to save Jess no matter the personal cost, Allie has to face the possibility that the only one she can trust is herself.

"Is that a threat?" He smirked.

"Do you feel threatened?"

"Very." He leaned over and whispered.  "You are a very threatening princess."

"Be careful or I'll beat you up with my tiara."

"Don't break it.  That thing has been in the Laurent family for years."

Okay so this is not a teaser with Levi in it.  Sorry, I am kinda a Jared fan.  Not that I want him with Allie, just with someone that can understand his attitude.

Samantha and Mason are together. Everyone knows it. Not everyone is dealing with it. While Mason’s ready to give them the middle finger, there’s one not going away. Her mother. Threats are issued. Ultimatums are given. Even blackmail is used, but only Samantha can put a stop to Analise. However, when a trauma from her past is triggered, she may not have the courage or strength to do what’s needed. If she doesn’t, Mason’s future could be destroyed.

Why I fell so hard?

I like how the two brothers protect Sam, and yet still let her be herself.  I like that through everything Logan will stand by his brother Mason.  The fogged out look is a favorite of mine as well.
